  • The Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano, also named ALX or A-29 is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack, counter insurgency, close air support, aerial reconnaissance missions in low threat environments, as well as providing pilot training. Designed to operate in high temperature and humidity conditions in extremely rugged terrain, the Super Tucano is highly maneuverable, has a low heat signature, incorporates fourth generation avionics and weapons system to deliver precision guided munitions. i was blown away by the sight of a turboprop in current wartime action. but when u think about it, it makes sense. theres no air to air combat currently, this is slow enough to track ground targets, easy to fly, easy to maintain & train crews, and doesnt take 20 million dollars to buy. smart idea, whoever came up with bringing back a modern turbo prop :D

Turboprops have been used as combat almost continuously since the end of the second world war, just not so much in the west. Read any cold war aviation magazine and you will see it packed with ads from companies like Valmet, Pilatus etc showing their trainers loaded to the gills with gun pods, light bombs and rocket pods. Columbia has used their A-29s in the air to air role, albeit against drug runners. Argentina used its Pucaras against the British in the Falklands, in a contested air environment. Seems like a good fit for Afghanistan so long as they can avoid the dushkas.

I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it's like $9 million to $14 million to buy, excluding guns, rockets, missiles (I.E. AIM-9 Sidewinders) or ammunition. Surprised Afghanistan could afford 4 of these.

Well actually Super Tucano with all the equipment and standard package of armaments and training + long term maintenance spares would probably go near 20mil a piece.
However turboprops were used whole time since WW2, when original WW2 ones went into history more modern variants entered service. Mostly used for CAS, COIN, training and artillery spotting, depending on aircraft we talk about.

People who criticises the A-29 don't know shit. They aren't designated for air combat, of course they aren't gonna dogfight a F-22. They are designated to light ground attack, and they do that rather well. He mix the concept and philosophy of the old-school fighters with the most modern avionics and flight systems that anyone can offers. And that's exaclty what makes the Super Tucano so special.

you can't compare the super tucano with an f18 for example. Each plane has its own purpose. The super tucano was designed to operate on low/mid altitude and to fight drug dealers in amazon rain forest. Of course this plane can't dogfight. For countries like Afghanistan this plane is more than good... And despite the looks the super tucano is an modern aircraft

I think the US should stick to the A-10s
      Performance Comparison
      A-10 | A-29
Guns: GAU-8 30mm| Gun pod Load requirement
      Engines: 2x GE Turbofans| 1x P&W Turbo prop 5 blade
      Cruise Speed: 340 mph, 560 km/h | 281 knots, 323 mph
      Payload: 16,000 lb (7,260 kg)| 1,550 kg (3,300 lb)
      Survivalbility: 20mm Resistance | Less than 50cal. (12.7mm)
      Origins: USA Fairchild| Brazil Embraer
The cost is where it stings, but I'd still put my money in the A-10. Quality over Quantity!

A-29 don't use gun pod, this is load in they wings.
The hour of flight of A-10 is around 5.000 to 7.000 dollars, and the hour of flight of A-29 is around 600 to 700 dollars.
A-29 carry less pounds of bombs, but can load same bombs used in A-10.
The A-29 can fly more hours of flight in mission than the A-10.
A-10 and A-29 Just fly to missions with friendly air superiority.

I remember hearing a while back that the USAF was doing trials with the Super Tucano as a low-cost CAS alternative to the aging A-10.. Instead the F-35 will somehow fly low and close enough to do that - ridiculous. The Tucano is the perfect plane for that role and it's AND cheap so we could buy a lot. Should have considered it.
There is just something awesome about the Tucano.. I don't know how to describe it. If the A-10 is a flying tank, the Tucano reminds me of a flying Jeep or HMMV with a mounted M2 or a TOW launcher. Just a bad ass little plane..

brasil HUE which is pretty much what the A-10 has been used for over the past 15 years.. I'm not suggesting that the Tucano is built to smash tanks heading over the Fulda gap like the A-10.. But the A-10 was never used for that, and turned out to be more useful for COIN and CAS, roles that are now supposedly be set to be delegated to aircraft that on paper do not make any sense in this role like the F-35.

    • @trumanhw
      @trumanhw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You'd think it could loiter longer (more efficient) & may be be easier to sync with tankers.
(Jets go their minimum while Tankers their max speeds to sync & can still be DIFFICULT.)
See: F-35 footage conducting aerial refueling. Flight envelopes may be more similar...
But a Super Tucano's combat radius is SHIT. Their Ferry range is less than a F-18's combat range.
The deciding factor is likely in the cost per flight hour
*Cost per Flight-Hour, though* (varies pending on how it's calculated)
      • A-10 -- $5,900 - $10,000
      • F-16 -- $8,000 - $20,000
      • EA18G -- $9,200 (common component of sorties for SEAD)
      • FA-18F -- $10,500 - $20,000 (USMC+USN cost per hour is pretty cheap)
Ridiculous costs, but, they're unparalleled superiority fighters without rival *nor A-A losses* )
      • F-15E -- $21,000 (The F-15 _according to the US_ *has never lost an A2A fight* )
      • F-35 -- $28,000
      • F-22 -- $33,500
      * • Super Tucano? -- $500 per hour* (that's what she said..?)
In fact, the Super Tucano's flown by Afghanis were the first means by which Aerial, laser-guided munitions with CCIP were ever dropped _by the Afghan Air Force_ ...
Sure, equipment, training, supplies & maintenance were paid for by US tax payers... but compare:
      $500 x hour for the A-29 ST vs an A-10 @ $10k x hour ...
      Oh & if the sortie is CAS ..? Those 30mm DU rounds from the GAU-8 cost a mere $135 x 1147 ($160,000).
      4,000 pounds of JP-8 at $600 per ton ($3.70 x gal) is another $1,200...
Super Tucano holds 110 gallons ... or $350 in fuel... and though SLAP rounds are pricy, I'd imagine they're using ball ammo for their M2 or M3 50s ... (The M3 is the aviation version as it receives more than adequate air-cooling to near double the cyclic rate ... though, they seem under stocked; carrying ~400 rounds ..??
The US gave the Afghanis 4 in 2018 & another 6 to come ... (& trained them in the US), and no doubt provided them with the ordinance. I doubt they have a company akin to a Raytheon. lol.
A single AIM-9 (and the ST CAN shoot IR missiles) costs $650,000 !!! And do not assume it's a forgone conclusion that it's easy to fire an IR missile ... IR must be cryogenically cooled for the seeker to work!
At $9 - $18 million each, they ain't no Cessna. I'd also guess we gave them the modern avionics suite, i.e., guidance systems to support CCIP for Laser guided munitions, for IR missiles and likely RADAR. I'd venture a guess that it was closer to $18 million. But, most of that money went to the US economy, & given the Afghanis proven ability to maintain their other "Ground Attack Platform (Cessna 208) !!! lol ... we can kinda be confident they can use & maintain them? And if we can only get the fuck out of there ... Super Tucanos lack the range for Afghanis FAVORITE engagements: Green-on-Blue. And, at under 350 MPH, there has to be a FEW Afghanis with IQs adequate to keep up with the pace of things in a Turbo-Prop. :)
Though A-10 are listed as _$18 - $48 million_ ... when the US lists a range..? I think the _high number_ is the safer bet. At 10-20x the cost per flight hour... perhaps we should have used Super Tucanos for CAS to do base security ... when Afghanis would attempt to hit us with mortar fire.
The Super Tucanos we gave them probably amount to the cost of one or two A-10s annual operating budget, in full: Cost of deployment, armament, ordinance, maintenance, prorated deterioration of the airframe, maintenance, etc.
Aircraft can only be pressurized so many times. It's the pressurization that fatigues airframes to the point of retirement. Aside from carrier based aircraft (and despite their beefier landing gear) ... From what I understand, air pressure at 5,000 M is ~HALF that of sea level (~7 PSI difference). I don't know the details of how cabin pressure is maintained, but I do know pressurization cycles are what cause commercial aviation craft to retire much of their fleet. This is part of why short flights cost more than the airport-fees & fuel prices would suggest ... as they must amortize their cost of the entire aircraft's useful life over fewer miles flown than long-haul aircraft.
And, since the Afghanis are fighting enemies who's ground-to-air defense consists of reusing the UXO (unexploded ordinance) as IEDs ... well, it's doubtful they'd need a titanium bathtub, anyway.

@@ricardosoto5770 You'd think that -- but not really ... they may be inexpensive, but their Ferry range is shorter than the combat range of an A-10. However, what they lack in fuel, they may get some modest degree of advantage that they can easily fly at 150 knots ... allowing very easy precision gun-runs.
Again, though they do not have long loiter-times ... they don't require anywhere NEAR the number of hours of maintenance a Jet requires ... perhaps allowing many more sorties ... and accumulating similar hours flown; but with lower speeds and shorter ranges, much of that would be spent in transition to where they're needed vs. actual time over the enemy.
If an when they lose the resources of an Airborne battle management Jet ... (AWACS / JSTARS, etc) ... they'll also have to spend more time locating targets, avoiding any actual G-to-A threats (if any exist in Afghanistan, for instance, where they were just deployed by the US for the Afghanis) ... once the US is truly out.
I'd imagine a single AC-130 gunship would've been INFINITELY more useful than any number of these ... except for the precision. In fact, Global Hawks maintained by the US are absolutely more useful, as they truly DO have immense loiter times. If they had less expensive munitions ... i.e., JDAMs which have a 30-meter radius (given a 100-second fall-time) ...
Granted, 400 rounds of M2 ball is cheaper ... but isn't as accurate (by far) and does nothing against hardened targets... the ST has an 8 hour endurance ... at $500 an hour. That's already $4,000 per sortie ... ignoring the cost of munitions, support craft, etc.
0x0 ejection seats are heavy. Pressurization systems are heavy. The ability to potentially evade missiles is expensive ... none of which do the current generation of unmanned vehicles use their resources for.
Personally, my first impression was in total agreement with you ... and I actually LIKE the idea of a turbo prop ... it SEEMS like it SHOULD be able to loiter longer ... AND CAN -- PER GALLON. But it can't hold as many gallons. And 400 rounds of M2 ...? is PALTRY.
The M9 Reaper-Drone is finally compatible with JDAMs ... IF IF IF ... I had the budget ... as fun as the A-29 looks ... and as happy as I'd have been to be a pilot ... and I'm SURE there are roles for it (CAS maybe...? ) hey, keep a few.
I'm also SURE we're not giving anyone but the brits (and inadvertently the Iranians) our drone tech ... But whats the difference..? Just RUN the program ourselves.
Or maybe that's what our plan is, anyway... keep running our drone program, and give them a few of the cheapest attack craft humanly possible ... that's undeniably better than those Cessna's the Afghani military presently was operating. lol. (I swear, I cannot even visualize prop crafts with a HIGH-mounted-WING without laughing. I mean, granted, our Forward Observers used those in Vietnam ... and designated enemy locations with them ... (very dangerous I might add) ... but hellooooo. That was 50 years ago!!! lol. Before any of the craft I listed above even EXISTED. But hey ... when your nation's claim to fame is that the geography makes it a pain in the ass to conquer...and the people "love death more than we love life" ...? Guess it makes sense.
In fact, forget heat-seekers and RADAR guided munitions for the Middle East ... we need weapons with incredible audio-sensitivity ... which lock on to repetitions of allahuakbar...

But the 2 cal50 in A29 can do a nearly 100% hit ratio at night in the middle of a heavy storm (ask it to Colombian pilots)... can use modern guided AG ordnance and AA missiles... had Datalink, RWR, FLIR, chaft, flare, HMD and everything a 4th Generation fighter have (everything but builtin radar... but who cares, it have Datalink)... and is a lot more easier and cheaper to maintain in ground.
The god'oll Jug is faster... but is not nearly stable at low speeds... the Jug is also sturdier... but it's made to trade shoots... the A-29 fight like a fucking ninja (goes silently, strike hard and fade away, in the middle of the night).

    • @Lemard77
      @Lemard77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The Tucano is more efficient because of the new technologies, also can have smart guided bombs for example, and rocket pods which far exceed the 10 or so HVAR a P-47 could carry. The world isn't eight .50 cals.....

    • @RTPJu
      @RTPJu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

***** , The P-47 do no miracle. It's a very robust plane, but 2 cal.50 landing well placed shoots can bring it down. The Jug resisted to a lot of .30, but the 50 and 20mm can waste it. The P-47 is very resistant against full frontal or rear shooting, but a Tucano can easily do very precisely deflective shooting. So, no one can doa a guards down fight here

I constantly argue that the military should return the SKYRAIDER and ditch the hyper-expensive A-10 Warthog.
A-10 was meant to be a tank buster in a NATO vs. SOVIET confrontation.
How much hyper-expensive firepower does one need to destroy a 30 or 50cal gun mounted in the back of a Toyota pickup??.
The Soviet Union was inflexible in their battle with the Taliban(and the U.S. was once supporting the "Freedom Fighters" that we're now battling).
Good to see the U.S. military isnt as inflexible.

in the Air Force, these pilots are considered tier 1 pilots who aren't qualified to fly fighter jets. It's either these prop attack planes or a transport plane.

Tucano means "Toucan", name given to the forest bird with big beak, by brazilian indian tribes.
      The A - 10 Thunderbolt has a powerful canon and its structure manage fire that a Super Tucano A - 29 can't. But, the A - 29 can perform 70 % of missions of A - 10 with very low cost. One hour of flight of A - 29 costs 700 to 1000 dollars. One hour of flight of A - 10 costs 12000 to 17000 dollars.
An A - 29 can be 12 hours flying without refueling if it is with two new support tanks on wings.
The plane is brazilian, created by the world famous hungarian aircraft designer Joseph Kovacs.
The engine is a Pratt - Whitney (an US factory) with 1600 hp. Several panel electronic parts are from US. It works with several armament from US too.
Then, this plane, since its creation, it`s half part brazilian and half part american.
One thing that makes the A-29 special is the requirement that the Brazilian army made to Embraer for its electronics. The A - 29 has sensors and devices for everything.
Embraer is the brazilian air force maker, but it became private since 1994.
There's several investors in Embraer and the four biggest investors are Brandes Investment Partners (US, 14,4%), Mondrian Investment Partners (United Kingdon, 10,1%), BNDESPar (Brazil, 5,4%) and the Blackrock (US; 5,0%).
That explain why US and United kingdom armies are using the Super Tucano at their aeronautics.

I do not know why so many are surprised by this aircraft and say get rid of the A 10 warthog to replace it with the stand off f 35 and other modern jets. As a soldier I KNOW this A 29 is the type of aircraft we need in close support. Just know,,,we soldiers are always danger close, we cannot rely on a F 15 to take out a target from 30,000 feet 5 miles away, it just does not work that way. The A 29 is common sense to us, not dreaming or delusions of a 50 million dollar jet that cant hang around more than 3 minutes almost killing us as well. The Sandy, the Warthog, and Attack Helicopters have succeeded far more times than all the jets combined in this type of role the A 29 is designed for. Also, in Vietnam the prop plane A 1 Sky Raider or Sandy did save us and did shoot down two Mig Russian fighter jets when they came down to that danger close altitude. After that they never messed around with going after the Sandy. Props are good, and so is the A 10.

If there is one thing Combat Flight Simming has taught me, it's that you don't fly in such close Formation, because one Lag/Ping Spike and the Leader just Teleports into you.
But honestly, I don't care for Jets and Helis, but these Birds seem like an awful lot of fun, like Crop Dusting, just that it's not Crop you're Dusting.

These A-29s are more than capable of providing CAS for our troops in low threat environments like Afghanistan, Mali, Philippines and Somalia. These turboprops would definitely relieve some of the strain on our 4th generation jets (F-15, F-16, F-18, etc) currently performing CAS missions in these war zones.
