Using the Bluetooth App is the best way of setting up this watch. The fact that you can manually set most of the functions is a design win, in my opinion. Tough solar would be useful but this watch is terrific for the sporting purposes that it was intended for.
I recently purchased the GBX. Coming from Suunto, Polar, and Garmin watches. Not having to charge the watch is a HUGE plus and still be able to track a run/steps. I dont think it’s trying to compete with the typical smart watches of the day and I would think users who buy this are not looking for it to. I’m able to see sunset/sunrise and time for EST and Zulu at the click of a button. Works for me.
This is one of the rare reviews that I remembered watching and now, months later when trying to decide on which g-shock to buy, I just searched for and watched again to inform that decision because I knew you'd highlighted some important things that no other reviewer has. Thanks for a genuinely useful video. Like and subscribe earned.
Tbh. This is a legit review. As a reviewer myself I realized that people just want to justify their purchases and really don’t want to hear anything critical. Imagine Casio watching this and improving the next one. Who benefits? The consumers.
Thanks for watching and thanks for weighing in with some common sense. Not saying the watch isn't nice, but Casio overlooked some basic things. Appreciate you commenting.
I am on the same boat. Just need it for jogging and casual stuff. The screen is awesome. I agree all these flaws are there but I am trying to get away from smartwatches so this one fits the bill.
You didn't even review the main function of the G-Lide series: The tide function! Living in Los Angeles, some years I have never missed a weekend on the beach, and the tide graph is amazing. Have had them for over a decade...but I'd need to keep 3 or 4 set up for different beaches I frequented. Now with the GBX 100 I don't have to.
I stick to my guns. It may do the Tide function well, but it does a lot of other things sub par. That means it is not a great product for the masses. Though I respect that some people get good use out of it. Glad you're liking your GBX, though.
Thank you for this review. I will receive my GBX-100NS-1 today, and have a V2 Combi bracelet waiting for it. Will be a great stealth watch with useful info, querks and all!
Clearly you have completely missed the point of this watch. You don't get this watch because it looks good. This watch is designed for surfers not collectors. Does the moon, tide and daylight information work correctly. It really matters. Another very valid point is I'm 63 years old I want a clear legible screen because my eyesight isnt as good as it was. These are far more important things than how long you have to wait to exit a screen. Learn some patience. As for a stopwatch how many other casio watches have stop watches. It's not that important. And trust me if a surfer is watching the seconds in a heat he's probably already lost. So if your not a surfer buy a watch that works more efficiently. If it doesn't work accurately as a tide moon daylight watch then it's as useful as a chocolate fireguard. Who cares about the stopwatch or minor niggles. So can you answer the question does it work accurately for purpose.
@@ComputerStuff and it's not your only choice. It's a surf watch why would you want a surf watch if your not a surfer then complain about the very things that make it a surf watch. Just choose a watch without the issues.
I'm thinking of getting this watch. The only function (other than time) that I would use is the stopwatch for my gym workouts. I don't even have any desire to use the Move app. Just time and stopwatch. Do you think it would be a good purchase for that purpose and just for the gym? I really like the looks, particularly the square design, stainless steel "bezel", and white strap. Thanks for the honest review!
I love the looks of the watch, too. But no I dont think its good for Gym use. The countdown timer is clumsy to operate, thus making it annoying for HIIT use. The stopwatch is not as intricate as on the standard square G Shocks. Is it a bad watch? By no means, and could you use it at the gym with little to no issue? Sure! But you're better off getting the standard Casio square g shock than you are this one.
@@ComputerStuff Great feedback, thanks. I think you're right -- even a $50 G-Shock will do just as well at the gym as this one, and probably with fewer glitches. Case in point, I have a $45 G-Shock I bought 10 years ago that still runs great (on its first battery, no less), while the G-Shock GBD100 I bought last year already crapped out on me (blank screen). Another limitation of the GBX-100 (and some of the other MIP display models) is that you can't zero the seconds when setting the time unless you use the app. Apparently this has been corrected on the GBD-200.
@@ComputerStuff One odd thing about the construction of the GBD-200 is that you can't remove the bezel without removing the module and buttons first, because there are screws under the buttons that secure the bezel. gshock highfashion posted a video showing how to disassemble the GBD-200. As far as I know, most (or all) of the interface design problems you found with the GBX-100 are also present in the GBD-200.
@@ComputerStuff On typical squares, like the DW-5600E or GW-M5610, there are four small screws holding the bezel on, but no adhesive. It takes only a minute or two to remove the screws and pop off the bezel. This is convenient for cleaning the dirt that inevitably ends up underneath the bezel.
I was about to purchase this one today ..when i asked the saleslady to explain some of the features, she just couldn't .. so i gave a thought about learning about this watch on youtube . Well tbh, im not gonna get it . Thats for sure .
I have this watch, one thing I thought unfair is the step counting opinión. I verified the precision my self using different methods... even counting the steps one by one, and it is incredibly accurate. At least mine.
Well, I wouldn't say that it's a "design" failure as this watch looks absolutely stunning. They did an outstanding job on that in the cosmetic department. However, I would say it's more of a functionality failure as the issues here are pertaining to the actual performance of the watch and its lack of practicality.
The watch is handsome. But I think good design also includes good function and practicality. Obviously these are semantics. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I was agreeing with this review and clumsiness but the time this guy bought in Apple watch for comparison i was like okaaaayyy.... Apple watch cost a fortune with cutting edge tech this watch is £110. You can't compare the two at all. Compare it with other hybrid watches like fossil or skagen
If I recall, the comparison made was regarding the step counter accuracy. Primitive technology. If Casio can't put an accurate counter on the watch, regardless of price, then don't put it in.
@@ComputerStuff something is better than nothing and it is not like the counter sensor is totally off the mark. My reason is you can't compare a high en premium device to a low budget tracker. There are other products in Casio's price range like fitbit or something. I didn't find your reason that O £500 apple watch does that so good but £130 casio is crap so overall device is crap... may be you are not the target audience I found your review nitpicky there are other reviewers that pointed out same issues but they accepted that you get what you pay for.
@@ibrahim0ffline Agree'd. I am nitpicky. Casio produced a lackluster product and they should be called out for it. Fitbit (for example) offers the Charge 4 for less money, and it offers more features, better accuracy, and a superior app interface (if thats important to you). Why should Casio get a pass for half-assing the design on this watch? If its durability and pedigree you're after - go for a classic square (which I'm wearing as I type). If it's something good for working out / counting steps, there are a SLEW of better product out there. This watch may appeal to some, and I don't want to yuck yours or their yum, but objectively it's not a good product.
Have the watch since release. And totally agree with everything you said. I put it on a G Shock combi bracelet and mostly just use it for the time and sunrise stuff. And I've deleted the Move app. But the one thing that bothers me the most (and is also the reason a long press doesn't work) is that the buttons solely operate when you let go of them and not when you actually press them. This, to me, is one of the biggest design flaws Casio has ever made. It just does not make sense to me at all. I would highly recommend getting the (near perfect) Garmin Instinct (2) instead of this (extremely flawed) G Lide.
It looks good and has a big time display - I have the gold metal surround one. The other functions aren't that important and the app is poor - but the look is great and the display is great.
Wow, thanks for the honest review! Was looking at this model. Agreed on design failures on many G-Shock watches, having owned several myself. From visibility (hour and minute hands same color as face dial-GST B400), day-of-the-week dials so small you need to really squint (MTG B1000-1A), steel buckles that cannot hold the straps properly (MTG B1000-1A) and even the G-Shock Connected app has usability and visibility issues (layers of menu, grey color fonts)
Thanks for watching! I really love the overall aesthetic of the G Shock square - I have a metal blue one which is maybe one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen! But there are some design choices I wish Casio would rectify! We'll be doing a review on the Tissot Connect Solar here soon which is a great option. What watch did you end up landing on?
@@ComputerStuff Unlikely? Really? An honest, legit reviewer will not say that. You are putting your credibility on the risk for a cheap watch? Who in the hell knows? I'll buy this stuff and will let you know if they will ever update its software.
@@carlomagno5151 Carlo, not sure where or why I upset you with my comment. I think the consensus is that this channel provides a pretty straight forward view on things. Casio has already released a newer version of this watch (which I have yet to try) - why would they waste their time in updating the software on this model? It's _unlikely_. But if they do, at least you'll be able to say "Told you so..."
The only reason I want this watch is the sunrise sunset, moon, and tides. You just spend ten minutes not talking about those things. Super annoying. If you don't care about those features, don't get this watch
It looks great. It has some very cool display screens. The user interface, however, is clumsy. 2 outta 3 ain't bad. I don't wear gshocks anymore. Yes, they are bullet proof and last forever, but they start looking ratty real qick. The resin scuffs and nicks easily. And resin rot is a very real issue. I had a square that saw hardly any use and at the 5 year mark the band just started to disintegrate. Much prefer stainless steel.
Yeah it's a shame. I wanted to love this watch so bad but just can't for the reasons you listed. I ended up settling on a metal square that despite not being "smart" is absolutely stunning to look at and well... TELLS THE TIME!
This G-Shock doesn't feature a resin band. It's made out of "reclaimed material" which is a neoprene composite. It's significantly softer and more pliable than resin.
Apple has mastered the metrics on the Apple Watch from heart rate monitor to step counter. If you want the most accurate wrist based anything, its probably from Apple. And this is coming from someone who doesn't care much for the Apple Watch.
3 ปีที่แล้ว
@@ComputerStuff I didn't know how apple wrist bands worked. I don't have one nor I like them. But your answer clears that small bit of the world that I ignored, so thanks. Note: I do have the gbx 1000 and I use the step counter a lot, having noticed myself the possible inaccuracy. I take into consideration that margin
I had essentially the same step counter as this watch in the G-Shock GBD100, and I agree with @Computer Stuff that it's not very accurate. If you're just on a continuous walk, it's fine and probably right in step with the Apple Watch. But where I found it wildly inaccurate in counting steps is just in every day walking around the house. I think it counts a lot of wrist movements when you're standing in place. I ended up tweaking my daily step goal when wearing this watch to 20,000 -- felt like that got to me 10,000-12,000 actual steps, but I could be way off with that.
I liked that you criticized the overflow of functions that are on the verge of just being bells and whistles. But I don't think you get this watch because it looks cool. I am thinking of getting this watch because having my Fenix 5X on my wrist all day is getting tiring after a year and I don't need all of it functions all day every day. I do check the sunset and sunrise times on my Garmin, and also tide for boating and surfing. I think this watch fills that gap. A simpler active watch lacking a lot of the features but also being lighter and cheaper. I am not getting rid of the Garmin of course, for when I am actually going on runs and rides.
I'm late to the party, but I think you hit the nail on the head with this review. It's beautiful to look at, but in the age of touch screens and fluid user interfaces, it just feels a bit clunky and awkward. On the plus side it doesn't need charging twice a week.
Agree'd. Was demoing a Series 7 Apple watch - the bad battery life still blows my mind. Garmin just released its new EPIX series which must be using some kind of voodoo with its battery life.
IMO, it is clear that this is just a fashion good looking watch. The other "design-flaw" fancy function is there to justify it to be charged more than $150. I do not even think it is even served as a sport watch at all or maybe just a very casual non-serious sport watch.
Honesty at last! I'm so sick of channels that basically are singing for their dinner and sitting on the fence.. People don't have money to burn and there's a responsibility with reviewing thank you.... Personally I find this was a waste of money, it's intentionally the dumb blonde of the squares for marketing reasons they will up the spec series by series along with the price.. Only good thing is the large time display's visibility, the sun and moon, the style..the large buttons, Apart from that it's mass production junk of course its tough but its not worth the money to me.. I take it surfers aren't too bright then according to this gshock model?... I also think they should allow date configuration..... I also agree 💯 with your review
I wish they gave up on the stopwatch, step counters and other fitness nonsense or surfing stuff and instead fleshed out the notifications to make them more useful and add a proper calendar functionality. I want a smartwatch without all the fitness tracking (seriously, if I wanted a fitness tracker I wouldn't bother with the inaccuracies of smartwatches and just get a smart ring) and which will not require me to regularly charge it, but I want the battery to last like in just regular watches. So far this one is the closest thing I could find on the market to what I want and when it comes to the software side of your complaints it seems that for me I would be going in the opposite direction with what I want from it...
Using the Bluetooth App is the best way of setting up this watch. The fact that you can manually set most of the functions is a design win, in my opinion. Tough solar would be useful but this watch is terrific for the sporting purposes that it was intended for.

@@ComputerStuff how is any Casio worth 1200?
@@Nick-cs9dt It's not, haha. But if someone HAS TO HAVE Sapphire its about the only option.
please review G-Shock GBD200, it looks similar but newer (I guess).
I'm looking to get my hands on one but am having issues sourcing it. They're either out of stock or we don't want to pay full retail, haha!
Another limitation of the GBX-100 (and some of the other MIP display models) is that you can't zero the seconds when setting the time unless you use the app. Apparently this has been corrected on the GBD-200.
Interesting! I need to get my hands on a GBD200.
@@garyk4017 Shame - I really love a good classic G Shock square. Interesting on the screws holding in the bezel - I guess adhesive was coming loose?
Glad to hear you like yours and that it is accurate.
@@ComputerStuff thanks for your cool answer!!

Such a pity that it has been so badly implemented. A good looking watch and love the screen resolution and size. But oh my....!
Agree'd. I want to love it!
Love love love love me some Garmin Instinct. Couldn't agree more, it's a vastly superior product.
As soon as you compared it to an Apple watch I lost the ability to take you seriously.
Sounds great!
@@ComputerStuff Of course it does!
It looks good and has a big time display - I have the gold metal surround one. The other functions aren't that important and the app is poor - but the look is great and the display is great.
Agree'd on looks and display!
i mean,.. its only 160.00 bucks by now, like you said, it looks good...
love the screen but really dislike the kinks in the software =(
Agree'd
Decent review, I hope casio will take in production couple of your ideas. Thank you.
Thanks Arturas!
Most of the design issues are from software. Future simple software update should solve them.
But will they?? Unlikely.
I tell ya what, Seattlegrrlie. You name a product you want reviewed and exactly how YOU want it reviewed, and I'll do it for you!
@@ComputerStuff good choice, the metal squares are stunning!
This G-Shock doesn't feature a resin band. It's made out of "reclaimed material" which is a neoprene composite. It's significantly softer and more pliable than resin.
I heard that if you don't have the resin band moving it can rot. So you're going to have to like wiggle it around every now and then to keep it good.
Genuine doubt: why is the apple watch the standard as a step counter?
Apple has mastered the metrics on the Apple Watch from heart rate monitor to step counter. If you want the most accurate wrist based anything, its probably from Apple. And this is coming from someone who doesn't care much for the Apple Watch.
@@88jwuebben Thanks for weighing in, Joe!
@@88jwuebben how do you change your daily goal?
Justifying purchases have always been futile. I bought a gshock because it's a gshock
Hah.. hard to argue that!
Fair point Patricio. Glad you've got a good use for it.
It sounds more like you expected too much out of it.
I expected it to be designed good. And it's not.
@@ComputerStuff Sorry but Apple watch is not a watch. It's a wrist computer.Real watch is Patek Philippe, seiko etc.

IMO, it is clear that this is just a fashion good looking watch. The other "design-flaw" fancy function is there to justify it to be charged more than $150. I do not even think it is even served as a sport watch at all or maybe just a very casual non-serious sport watch.
i disagree
Watch fantastic, super star!
Those software flaws can be easily solved with firmware updates..but I guess Casio doesn't give a shit lol
That pretty much sums it up.
You remind me of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory
Thank you!
