When I went through OSUT for the Army Infantry in 2012. I literally did the same thing. I wrote home maybe once a week or once every other week. When we got our calls. I did not call home until the last call to let our family know about graduation and family day. I've known guys who've wrote home everyday and talked about home everyday some even quit because they were so home sick. Do not quit during BCT/AIT/OSUT! The fastest way to go home or get out of training is to graduate often times people who quit are there longer than the people who graduate. It's only a couple of months to a half of year. Staying busy helps as well. When I was deployed to Iraq in 2003, I didn't write a letter for a month because I was so busy. The flip side is that people got worried and started calling my mom to see if I was okay. So, maybe write a letter once a week is best. You have to remember that you may not be the only one worrying about how you're doing. Sometimes family can get so desperate for your letters, that they will call your Chain Of Command which is the last thing you want. It puts undue attention on you from your leadership, whether that be in Basic/AIT, or deployed far from home. Trust me.

My son said it’s harder to have motivation in AIT! You have JUST enough free time to miss home more and everything sucks more because of it! His words!
Leaving for the national guard in less than 30 days for Fort Jackson, I am a mom of 5, wife, and business owner so this is gonna be a HUGE shift for me. I’m so glad you did this video!
Which ironically made AIT easier, I was the only one in my platoon who DID NOT want my phone and after that I didn’t have any worries about back home and was able to better concentrate on training
I’m heading in two days to my last swearing in and shipping out next day. I’m extremely excited for the challenge and the honor to serve in the military, but I do have a 6 month old and a wife who can’t stand the thought of me being away. One letter a week is definitely a minimum. Thank you for your vids, and your push up guide finally got me to 30 pushups easy!
Funny I didn’t miss “home” when I left for basic Training @Ft Jackson Maybe because I was leaving dysfunction behind🤔making it easier to focus on the training. Writing/receiving mail on occasion was helpful as it was nice to be thought of.
That's interesting. I thought it would have been the opposite, writing/calling whenever possible would help. It makes sense not doing it all the time, though. Thanks for the tip!
When I was deployed to Kosovo, a buddy of mine would call his wife every chance he got. Sometimes twice in a 24 hour period. They started having problems. He asked me what I thought he should do, and I said cut down by at least half and once a week at the least. It worked. He wasn't worried as much about his wife, and she wasn't so angry with him for his possible control freak issues.
I finally enlisted yesterday and I’m going to Fort Jackson in May! I’m so ready to start this journey again 🙂 (I’m prior service from the Marine Corps, I got discharged from Bootcamp due to some injuries I had)
Matt Ward thank you! And thank you for teaching me about the Army and what basic would be like, I honestly had no clue about any of it until I found you on TH-cam. Never stop making these informational videos because you really are helping a lot of people out 😄

I write my husband every day and he writes me just about every day too. He spent 44 days at reception and the no contact was killing him. He just turned green this weekend and said all of the letter writing and pictures he got kept him going. I'm sure everyone is different but he loved the communication. Especially since we got married on HBL and had only a week together afterwards. He starts Infantry training today and I'm sure we'll continue to communicate as much as possible (atleast until I ship to Jackson april 13).
I’m graduating tomorrow but count it by Sunday’s, the time your thinking about home the most if at night but honestly if y’all are scared about joining and missing people you won’t even think of home as much as you think.
Haha I grew up in foster care, no home = no worries. I will miss a few people though. We'll be writing back and forth so it's gonna be a breeze for me. 19D option 4 shipping March 16th!
good luck. as a soldier, I've said many times to consider the air force before jumping into the army and why, but do what you want just make sure you understand what you're getting into with the army and what the alternatives (the other branches like the AF) are.
In all honesty, part of the reason I'm joining the army is because I don't have anything I will miss at home. I have a pretty mundane civilian life. I've been bored to tears going to college and working 9-5. I dont want to do this crap anymore. I havent gotten my associate's yet, but I'm just happy to have completed enough credits to come in as a PFC. Im excited for the new phase of my life and truly believe I'm going to enjoy my time in the army!
Oh yeah, unless you get a good MOS (nothing in the 92 series or combat MOS or 25 series. ) and get sent to a good unit (which you have no control over) you're going to get really bored beyond tears in the military and especially in the army.... Lots of soldiers, especially lower enlisted, end up not doing anything related to their MOS and instead of relegated to lifting tents and cleaning out connexes (storage sheds) in the motor pool all day every day. In the army, our PT is called "PRT" and we have to do the *exact same exercises in the exact same order every single day* including many exercises that have little or no effect on your physical fitness at all, like the "prone row" Then with a lot of 11 bravo infantry guys, they get stuck also having to mow lawns and pull up weeds. I'd say consider the air force instead of the army, so that way you would be able to do your own PT at least some of the time, you would actually be doing your job instead of the motor pool, you wouldn't have to worry about the field, you'd be able to leave the barracks much sooner (E4 instead of E6 like army) etc. but that just might fly over your head just like most other people who haven't been in the military insisting the only branch of the military is the army and it's all about the army. So don't count on life becoming "exiting", especially in the army, unless, again, you have a decent MOS (like maybe CID 31 delta or PSYOP 37 foxtrot or maybe watercraft operator 88 kilo) and get sent to a decent unit.
@@macburger5026 may I ask what sucks so bad about the 92 mos'? I was considering 92y (ammo specialist), but I should note that 37f (psy ops) was also in contention. I'm leaning towards one of the 35's (the intelligence jobs) though. Care to shed light on military intelligence?
hey I wanted to ask any of you military members 1) what is a bonus? /How do you get one? 2) When your deployed can you bring your cellphone to talk to your family when your free? Or is writing letters to your family the only way you can talk to them? I would really like to know the answer to this is any of you members with military background can answer this I would be thankful
I'm at my first unit...I'm becoming an aunt for the first time in April from one brother. Another brother is getting married in Sept. I'm glad I'm living my dream, but it's just hard to know I'm missing a few firsts by being away.
Thank you for another helpful video! My boyfriend is leaving Feb. 18th for Fort Benning and I’ve been binging your channel and sending your videos to him all the time lol I was just wondering if you could talk more on Infantry’s updated training? I haven’t found too much about the 22 week training online except the fact that it was extended.
@@acaciasmith9411 if he's active duty especially, I hope your relationship can last. The military is already a very stressful life as it is. The army in particular is arguably the most stressful next to only the marines. Keep in mind that we have the longest deployments of all the branches, lasting from 9 months to a year (the marines by contrast may have to do just 7 months). Unlike other branches like the air force, we in the army also have to go to the field a lot and stay for weeks at a time. People in infantry may have to stay for a month and a half at a time and it's going to get very stressful dealing with all those people, including people you don't get along with, for every single day in those types of conditions (not being able to bathe and clean yourself for all of that time). Infantry soldiers and marines can be some of the biggest assholes around, so your boyfriend might end up with an even more unnecessarily aggressive than he started out with. Then there will be times where in addition to basically sleeping out in the motor pool like so many other solders of various MOSs do, infantry guys are frequently put to work as basically migrant workers pulling up weeds and mowing lawns, things that will put even more stress on him. He might even have PTSD making him even harder to deal with and you folks might end up not working out. Good luck.
mac mac burger Thank you for all the info 😊 I actually knew a little bit like the deployment b/c my brother-in-law just got back from a year deployment in Kuwait last week and he’s in the Army with only six months left Active. But yeah my boyfriend is going in as Active Duty Infantry and wants to do some more specialized training if he passes the pre qualification courses (I think that’s what you call them). Him and I have been together for almost 4 years now with only a few bumps in the road so far but I know that we won’t know how our relationship is going to change until he goes through everything. I just know open communication and understanding is going to be key here. Luckily for me I’m trying to get onto Nursing school so I definitely have something to keep myself occupied with lol And if everything on my side goes on track he will only have 2 years left after my degree since he signed on for 6.
@@acaciasmith9411 -" he signed on for 6" (???) on active duty??? six years in any branch, even the Air Force, may not be a great idea for a first time enlistment..... -*-but six years ACTIVE DUTY in the ARMY (he must have done it for some kind of bonus but the bonus WON'T BE WORTH IT, TRUST ME) or MARINES??? Hey Im heading out to Fort Leonard Wood in a couple weeks as a 35N and i was wondering a few things.. what is the best way to prep before leaving, and will i be able to bring new running shoes with me?
Hey Matt I like watching your videos and lately I have been questioning on if I want to join the Army. Im 15 at the moment and starting AFJROTC in HS so if a lot of what I say doesn't make sense please understand I don't know much. I want to become an officer in the army and make it a career, the main question I have is this. When they say I need a bachelors degree what do they mean by that? Do I need 4 years in ROTC or 4 years in a study at college like Tech/Spanish or any major.
Kind of a strange question, but do people cry at basic/ is it normal to cry at some point at basic? Not necessarily because of the pain but just being away from everyone and home for so long?
There are people that do cry the first day yes. But please don't let that be you. It happens and usually people cry on the first 1 minute phone call home the first day of BCT
I doubt you'll even see this but it's worth a shot but I'm 16 turning 17 soon and I'm interested in the army and thinking about enlisting so you you have any tips or any advice you could give me I would appreciate it thanks.
You get a phone during basic now? Also the struggle of missing home helps make you mentally tougher just make sure you get through it and not give up! "If you are going through hell, keep going"
Hey Matt, I have just one question, Can I be a combat medic in the Army as an officer? I did my research and it said I can be the leader of a combat medic platoon, or I can get my merit badge in medical school? Something like that... anyways can someone clear this up for me? So can I be a combat medic as an officer, or at least a doctor?
I’m leaving to fort Jackson on February 11th with a mos of 91b and I’ve been told so many times yea the physical stuff sucks but it ends that’s something you never have to worry about because it ends but I’m 18 years old never lived without my family and that’s what scares me the most is missing my family but I’m so excited to start the next chapter in my life I’m dreamt about being in the army since I was a child and I’m so glad that I stepped up and joined
If anyone could answer this I’d appreciate it. I wanted to become a ranger, but only wanted a shorter contract like 2 years. Is that possible if I want to become a ranger?

I’m leaving on Monday! Good luck to you man!
We have to graduate from basic first...
@@pokemonpokemon2644 not then AIT, then you're still not considered crap until you become at least an E4 promotable (meaning you're about to make E5)
The Caroland Crew I ship out Monday I go to the hotel Sunday I got mixed up💀
hey I wanted to ask any of you military members
1) what is a bonus? /How do you get one?
2) When your deployed can you bring your cellphone to talk to your family when your free? Or is writing letters to your family the only way you can talk to them?
I would really like to know the answer to this is any of you members with military background can answer this I would be thankful
February 10th fort jackson😤😤😤
Saj Muhammad same here💪🏾
I remember losing my gf in the middle of blue phase. And it sucked, but my mind was constantly on other things i never had time to think about it.
I'm at my first unit...I'm becoming an aunt for the first time in April from one brother. Another brother is getting married in Sept. I'm glad I'm living my dream, but it's just hard to know I'm missing a few firsts by being away.
Choose your scheduled leave carefully. Hopefully they understand your sacrifice and realize you can't be there for everything.
hopefully your contract isn't too long.
U need new merch
Thank you for another helpful video! My boyfriend is leaving Feb. 18th for Fort Benning and I’ve been binging your channel and sending your videos to him all the time lol I was just wondering if you could talk more on Infantry’s updated training? I haven’t found too much about the 22 week training online except the fact that it was extended.
leaving the same day and same place
brett orr that’s cool! I’m just ready for the training to be over with and you guys haven’t even left yet lol But hope everything goes well for you 😊
@@acaciasmith9411 if he's active duty especially, I hope your relationship can last.
(NOOOOO!!!!)AS INFANTRY, WHICH IS ARGUABLY THE LOWEST WORST JOB IN THE MILITARY WITH THE HIGHEST PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS??? NNNNOOOOO!!!!-*- (And you won't be able to change your MOS, until you are within your window of reenlistment, which is a year away from the end of your contract. If you sign for three years then that's two years..... -*-but if you sign for SIX YEARS, then you'll have to wait at least FIVE YEARS-*- Hopefully he can get this changed to a shorter contract and/or a MOS change altogether before shipping out. I believe you are not set in stone to have to do anything until you ship out to basic training )-
good luck to the both of you.
i leave in 5 days fort benning
Can you make a video on how they ship people to basic training like which one will i go to
Hi matt can you also make a video on how to get over not being able to
Have your phone like what’s some good tips because sad to say I’m addicted thank you
Just passed my asvab today. Gotta finish getting a tattoo removed off my hand then i swear in and sign my contract.
I've been doing hand tat removal for almost 2 years so i can enlist. Good luck with it it takes forever!
@@Wileye86 ive had 3 treatments and mine is almost gone only got 1 maybe 2 left and its a 2 week healing process
@@reelsteelesharkfishing6329 wow.was the tat done in a shop? I know home done tats come out alot faster. And idk where u go but 2 weeks is way to soon for treatments. 6 to8 weeks is what I wait. Mine is stubborn and taking alot of treatments. Good luck to u!!
@@reelsteelesharkfishing6329 also keep all paperwork from it cause you will need it for meps
@@Wileye86 i got to a office that only does tattoo removals. Ive got no scars no burns and no issues from it
I leave for Ft Jackson February 3rd and I’m a 35W....super super nervous and don’t really know if I’m in enough shape to get through
Same here I leave February 3rd to jackson
Yo what’s a good Wrist watch for basic training
Matt Ward are you aloud to bring a journal to write in during boot camp????
I think if you do, someone might read it out loud.
Can military police become special forces in all brances?
Ryan Cheslick no
Hey Matt, I don’t know if you have already but can you make a video on crucible? Idk if that is only a marine thing
Only a marine thing bud ✊
Foudii you need to go to college, (university) for roughly 4 years and graduate with a bachelors degree.
I leave for FLW March 16 31B anyone else???
Kind of a strange question, but do people cry at basic/ is it normal to cry at some point at basic? Not necessarily because of the pain but just being away from everyone and home for so long?
There are people that do cry the first day yes. But please don't let that be you. It happens and usually people cry on the first 1 minute phone call home the first day of BCT
@@MattWard89 I see thanks, I don't ship til July so I still have a while to enjoy being at home trying to make the most of it.
Yes people cry
I leave basic May 5th and I’m going 11x. Does anyone know what the chances are of me getting 11b. I really don’t want 11c but I guess it is what it is
You have roughly a 75% chance of being a bravo
I doubt you'll even see this but it's worth a shot but I'm 16 turning 17 soon and I'm interested in the army and thinking about enlisting so you you have any tips or any advice you could give me I would appreciate it thanks.
CEO of what is going on guys
How does pay work when your married with kids? I'd like a vid on pay.
You get a phone during basic now? Also the struggle of missing home helps make you mentally tougher just make sure you get through it and not give up! "If you are going through hell, keep going"
your phone is taken away on day zero. you will have maybe five chances to use your phone over the course of basic, for a total of maybe 10 minutes.
Mos for people who are partially color blind. I couldnt find info anywhere
💯💯
Anyone leaving for basic after graduation?
If anyone could answer this I’d appreciate it. I wanted to become a ranger, but only wanted a shorter contract like 2 years. Is that possible if I want to become a ranger?
badkarma no minimum is 4 years for op40
what? someone has time to think about home in basic?
I love you Matt but sometimes you talk in circles and in this video you just said the same thing about 28 times in a row I bout died when you said “so moral of the story is”
Anyone leaving feb 03
KevDawg I am, fort Jackson. Wby?
Max Bass I am leaving to Jackson 25B
OVERDOSEDWORM YT lol you nervous?

Have toxic friends and family. Lmaooooo
if youre interested in a girl / boy before you go to BCT, my advice is just end things.
brendanshepalo2 that would be silly unless you’re a pretty new “couple” and only started dating. I’ve been with my girl for what will be 5 years this December. Not sure I can say piss off to her because of the army lol
Bro how do you make so many basic training videos. Shits old
Hello and greets from Germany. I've got something on my mind. Sorry, I don't want to disturb you.
Someone's playing games at your expense... With fake accounts at ig, tiktok and hangouts.... That's not OK...
