    Outside of the uniqueness of this pedal and the new version having the “Andy” switch… the real nugget here is remembering to try your pedals in different tunings and settings to yield wider varieties of results. Good stuff as always Andy.

    This is literally the only stereo chorus I have ever used, and that was the early 90s (and wasn't even mine) and I have never thought about chorus since. Until now, my band wants to do some 80s covers... So naturally, I thought of the DOD, and magically (without even searching) this shows upin my TH-cam feed. Crazy.

    Sounds great. It's funny how, in the land of chorus, a little nudge in this or that direction of only a few milliseconds gets you what feels like a qualitatively different sound. I suspect the "iffy" part of it is that the FX65, and most BBD-based chorus pedals, use small-value ceramic capacitors for setting the range of the clock that drives the delay chip, and those caps are not especially precise. That's not a slight on quality, but it does mean that *nailing* the sounds you illustrated can be hit or miss, and vary by unit, unless one is selecting caps, based on measured value, rather than what is printed on the component. The schematic shows the critical capacitor to be 25pf, which doesn't leave a lot of room for adjustment. Much like the Boss BF-2 flanger, the FX65's "Depth" control essentially pans between a fixed voltage and the LFO. So, more of one gets you less of the other, and the Delay Time control adjusts what that final combination results in.

    • @AndyDemos
      @AndyDemos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thanks Mark, always interesting to hear your input! 👍🏻

      @@AndyDemos Thanks Andy. I always learn from you as well. One day we have to meet.
      In the meantime, here's an experiment that you or any viewers here can try. I've done it and it works.
      With "through-zero flanging", the delayed signal being modulated moves *ahead* in time, relative to the stable "dry" signal. It is essentially impossible to get a bucket-brigade chip to do that. *However* , if one delays the dry/clean signal by a very small amount - less than 2msec - the delay can be swept to times *shorter* than that. Craig Anderton explained this very nicely some 40 years ago in one of his GP columns.
      I mentioned how the Depth control works in the FX65, and many other analog time-based FX, panning/blending between a fixed and modulated voltage controlling the clock in the circuit. I own a pair of old blue-box Boss BF-1 flangers, that use this approach. I lifted one end of the resistor that mixes the dry signal in with the wet (an easily reversible and nondestructive mod). If I use one on the units as my "dry" signal, and the other as my modulated signal (using a splitter/mixer to separate and then recombine their respective signals), I can use the Manual delay control on one unit to set a fixed delay. This determines how much "room" there is for the swept unit to move "ahead" of the other in time. In effect, I can determine how long the swept unit spends on "the other side of zero" before returning back through the zero point.
      Even wilder, if BOTH units are allowed to be swept, in unsynchronized fashion, the "through-zero" point crops up in an unpredictable and inconsistent way. Not everybody's cup of meat, but interesting.
      In the FX65, one could produce a "fixed delay" by lifting one end of R39 and/or R46, both 47k, and adjusting the Depth and Delay Time controls to get a steady short delay coming out either or both output jacks.

    I couldn’t wait to get rid of the fx65 because of the phase cancellation. I did some recording in stereo but gigged with it in mono. I used it for 3
    years but finally gave up on it.
    The other guitar player in the band had one that was opposite mine. He always used the top output, the bottom output had the phase cancellation on his.
    I replaced it with a Boss CE-3 which is still on my pedal board 38 years later.
