Very fair and professional. Unlike some reviewers, you clearly understood what this camera is, what it's for, and what it represents and what it doesn't represent. What an exciting time to be a photographer!
We appreciate your perspective. We wanted to give it a fair shake for what it is designed for. I am glad to hear that you see value in that.
Great video, had fun a lot of fun shooting with you guys again.
Another thing that's worth considering is that the things that the a9iii does well can't really be done with high end editing well, like catching more moments in general, pre capture, rolling shutter, etc. but things that it may lack ever so slightly, megapixels, dynamic range, noise, are all advancing quickly as post processing afterthoughts. So while it's still expensive/new it really is a kind of jack of all trades for most people, just not there on the price yet.
It’s nice to see a nice, long, thorough video from you folks! Looks like a lot of work, good job!
(Side note: apparently a selection of Profoto flashes have flash durations of 1/80,000th. I would imagine the story might be similar for high FPS flashes from Broncolor or Elinchrom)
Really good intro. Liked the demonstration of global shutter with bow-string on release. Also the flash and ambient light challenges were informative. Not a product I am specifically interested in, however the coverage of the global shutter is very well done and a good video production for a variety of audiences with enough duration to have the sense of thoroughness. Drew is the standout segment with good cadence, editing, and explanations of what we are looking at in the comparisons, and otherwise well done Evelyn and Dave.
Great Review! Just picked mine up from you guys and agree on all notes. Cheers!
I got my A9-III yesterday. I'm excited.
What country are you in?

1:20 It's funny how mirrorless FF cameras (other than Canon and Nikon) keep incrementally getting bigger and more D-SLR-like in handling/ergonomics to improve handling, as if it's some new revolution....a camera that's comfy to hold/use with lenses you'll actually need/use in real life (not everyone shoots with a pancake lens on a paper thin body to get sneaky photos of strangers on the subway). Just an observation. 😃
I see you've talked about fast shutter flash, and adjusting the camera to delay it in order to sync with a flash, BUT I haven't seen you use a sync cable, instead of a radio flash transmitter. Would that make a difference??
Nice portrait of Dave at 10:37.
I'd like to see a comparison of different flashes and how much power/range/guide number as you increase the shutter speed above the more typical snyc speed of 1/250. How do various flashes compare at 1/8,000 shutter speed? And what about firing the flash at 1/2 power, or 1/4 power or 1/8th power and so on. So, if you want to take a series of shots at 1/8,000 in rapid fashion, what flash can handle that at 10 fps or even 20 fps?
So true no one wants to test these things! Two flashes that will shoot this fast are the new Godox V1 Pro with the BP960 Battery pack and the Nissin MG80! I was told by a Godox Rep that with the BP960 Battery the V1 Pro will recycle to full power in less than one sec. The Nissin will keep with my Sony A99m2 at 12FPS but only at 250th sec before you go into HSS and Sony A1 at 20 FPS! They should be able to handle 8000th sec on the A9iii because you don't have to engage HSS which robs you of power. Have not updated the firmware on my Sony HLV-RM602 flash yet to see if it can shoot 30 FPS without over heating.
@@351linzdoctor Thanks....great info. I almost won a Sony HVL-F60RM2 on ebay today. Would have bid higher but I wasn't sure how it compared to Godox at the lower speeds of 1/8,000.
Nice review. For flash sync, not sure if Sony cameras do tell the flashes what is its shutter speed setting but if they do, it will be an easy firmware fix for 3rd party manufacturers to preprogram the flash delays at various shutter speeds and power-levels but... if not, it will be one of the many "Sony" only features they reserve for Sony flashes to give themselves an advantage vs 3rd party flashes like what they do about video AF with adapted lenses, no 3rd-party teleconverters, etc etc
Thank you to good video. But why you don.t try it to Sony’s flash ? These flash sync all speed, when you upgrade them a new firmware. They work fawlessy.
Is it better than the Fx3 in terms of videography?
Is it wrong that I want them to make a new version of the NEX-VG900E with this sensor.
But why would you really need to shoot a still subject with such a high shutter speed ? Those numbers are for fast moving subjects,
As a A9MKI shooter I waited with anticipation convinced I would get the A9MKIII . I just don't think a new camera with the same MP and slightly lower image quality than my 2017 A9 is worth the £6000 they are asking. A £4500 A9MKIII with a stacked 33mp would have got my money. So I have now ordered an A1 as prices have come down. I do think with this camera aimed at such a small segment of the market place there is room in Sonys line up for a lower priced stacked camera to compete with the Z8 .
WOW what a camera
I love it, my question is, how well does it do with wildlife, mammals and birds?
I think the Sony a9iii has its place but not for wildlife. It may be fast enough but the resolution isn’t unless you can get really close to your subject. 24mp doesn’t give much room to crop if needed.
A wild Gary appears!
Sony est incroyable, il surprend .Il est indomptable .Bravo Sony.
Impressive sports shooter.😊
Also, GUNS, IN CANADA. The horror 🤣
ISO does not change how much light a camera. Gathers
All these new Sony/Canon/NIkon with AI and "shoot fast"...can somone do tests of using it for street where quickness of "the moment" is of much more importance than face tracking or 120fps.
Why couldn’t you go to 100 ISO? I know the base is 250 but it has an expanded ISO of 100 available I thought..
Expanded base ISOs are not useful. On the a9 III you will get identical results whether you shoot at 100 ISO ISO Expanded or shoot at 250 ISO, overexpose by 1.3 stops, and bring the exposure down in post. Either way, you're throwing away over a stop of highlight information. It's complicated, but my recommendation is to always ignore the lower expanded ISO options.
@@thatjordandrake I generally don’t use expanded myself but I was just curious when she had said something about how bright it was but she was stuck at 250
The flash technology is way behind the advanced technology of the A9III. It's like driving a racing car with mediocre tyres. You will never the get the real performance of the car. There is currently only one flash on the market, that is powerful enough, which is the Broncolor Satos Series with it's rectangular flash curve.
only one question: can you send me one?
4:21 painful
Worry no, that lens was well beyond repair, the entire lens mount is missing.
Microsecond, not millisecond ;)
You guys should have used a Nikon Lens 😂. Poor canon 😢.
give me lens please🙏🏻😂
Canon r6 is better and so much less expensive one doesn’t need 50000 fps or 10,000000 shot buffer
And this is supposed to be an independent review???
Absolutely, this is our independent review based on our experience and opinions. Any questions?
Ill wait umtil this tech is down sample to there cheaper camera in 5 years . This is extreme technology that 99% dont need thats my 50 years of experience talking
Чтобы продавать, фотографировать уметь не нужно... Ибо фотографии этих двоих абсолютно не впечатляют...
Canon has better af imo
So sick of these "reviews" where any cons are conveniently glossed over for early review access. Thankfully Petapixel review highlights the serious dynamic range and APS-C level noise for a $6000 USD Camera.
We often share access with Chris & Jordan (my husband) from PetaPixel. While they focused more on their sensor findings for their video, we focused more on the performance and practical use in action photography. It would be boring if we all did the same thing with our time with the sample units. - Evelyn
Given that you can't take this type of camera into an NFL game or an nba game with a long Lens essentially this is restricted to college level sport or community sport Not sure why you D spend $6000 for that top of camera and given its poor image quality already that we can see problems no professional portrait photographer is going to say this camera is going to be successful from a selling point of view but it is a complete flop
Wait what? Why couldn’t you attach the 400mm F2.8 to this and bring it to an NFL game (assuming you have creds)?
Somebody got out of bed the wrong side. This is a niche camera designed for profi sports and wildlife photographers. Are you implying that accredited sports photographers are not allowed to use long lenses in NFL or NBA games? However I do believe there exists other types of sports. I am not defending this camera saying its the best of the best and certainly there are better cameras for different genres. However I could not claim to judge a cameras real life performance until I have used it and not just rely on a few TH-cam videos.
over priced!!!
