    This is the video I was waiting for. Initially the A9 III had me hyped up, but I am at the stage in life where I have way too much gear so I didn’t pull the trigger. Also, the A1 although it does have opportunities from a feature perspective, is still the flagship camera. And, this flagship A1 delivers some incredible results. Yes - features are nice, but usability and quality is superiors in real world use. A9III is hands down great for sports/action/wildlife photography, the A1 is still king as a best-in-class hybrid camera. Great video Jake. Full watch.

      A9iii is great for all types of photography, not just sports, action and wildlife. That GS sensor is a game changer for anyone who only uses E-shutter like me. The A1 is still a great camera and will continue to be a great camera. For sure the A1-ii will have a GS sensor.

    have the A1 and bought the A9iii.. for my use case.. i'm selling the A1. The screen dexterity, the global shutter for indoor terrible lighting conditions, the stability, the button layout, the no need for HSS anymore are all huge benifits for my work.. but i can see where your work in the brightest conditions ever and what you're going after is more suited for the A1. i do have an A7RV as a stills companion at 61MP.. so that's how im dealing with the lower MP on the A9iii. Its interesting to see how different media creators all have different needs and use cases and how the equipment actually 'does matter' in professional situations.

      Nice and yeah for what you do the a9III is definitely better especially since you have the a7rV. In an ideal world I’d just own both but I can’t justify the cost at the moment.

    Thank you so much for this review. I was debadting between the two cameras since A9 III's introduction as I do have the need for the Silent Electronic Shutter (Blackout free is a nice bonus) to operate with flash for event photography. Based on the price and the new Global shutter I thought I would choose the A9 III; however, after shooting the A7R V for a year now I have come to appriciate the benifit of the high megapixel sensor delivers without the need of swapping out lenses in a pinch with it's cropping ability. As you pointed out in your review the base ISO for A9 III starts at ISO 250 which is not ideal for my need to use/cary a variable ND filter, add another filter infront of the good quality lenses all the time to shoot Run & Gun outdoor events. At the end, I was able to aquire a used A1 at lesser cost than a new A9 III that still has 2+ years of local/international transferable warranty. I am very satisfied with its performance over the A7R V especially my A7R V's LCD screen is 99% in the fully closed position. Thanks again for this comparison review.

    Hi Jake, very good comparison video, thanks for that. 👍🏻 Fortunately, as journalists we have the luxury of owning both cameras. When it comes to image quality, we notice virtually no disadvantages up to ISO 12,800 when using the a9 III. Bought the Sony A9iii after watching your video. I got scared during the introduction, thinking you're regretting it, and it's past my return window. I really should stop watching videos about this camera. I'm hoping to learn more about the fact that it's a new system for me after shooting SOny A1, A7iv, Fuji GFX 100s, and Sony A7r4, I thought going back to a 24mp camera was a sacrifice. I shoot weddings and sell books and prints to my clients. I bought the A9iii because I was commissioned to shoot for a modelling agency and need the smaller jpeg files for runway shows and the speed and lighting setup. Overall, nice video! Thanks, Jake!

    Great review. I'm an amateur with an a7rv, which I love. However, I really enjoy wildlife photography and the a7rv just doesn't have it for wildlife in motion. I just picked up a used a1 and, although I prefer the a7rv ergonomically, the focus abilities and speed of the a1 make it the clear winner for wildlife, esp. w/ the higher resolution compared to the a9iii.

    I have the A1 (since last July 23) and I’m pretty happy with it… but I mostly do video, so I also bought the FX3 which is a nice “team” for what I need.
    Then, “global shutter” and I’m thinking that the only ‘need’ for an A9 would be shooting - action - and high speed flash for SPX but I think I’m gonna RENT one for an SPX shot I needed to do and see if I would use it for more than the occasional action and/or SPX shooting.

    In my case I have just got the A9iii, but not to replace my A1, but as second body. They are both fantastic cameras and ideal for wildlife photography which covers most of my shooting. For me what I miss most from the A1 when using the A9iii is the 50mp to allow plenty of crop, although using Topaz AI to upscale photos after editing has reduced this problem. The main thing which makes the A9iii better for me is the Pre-capture. On virtually every photo shoot I get pictures with the A9iii I would just of miss if using the A1, as with wildlife action often occurs without warming particularly with birds. The 120fps of the A9iii I have not found necessary to use so far, although I am sure it will come in useful occasionally - however I have my A9iii by default set-up shooting at 30fps then the buffer allows for a generous 12 seconds continuous burst. I will certainly be keeping my A1 until a mark 2 version comes out and continue using it when I want maximum resolution.

    Great video. A1 for me all day. I like having the extra resolution so that you can still get a crisp image when cropping. Also 20-30fps is plenty when shooting stills. The only thing I wish the A1 had is the ability to track different subject types e.g. car, train etc.
    Other than that, it’s solid.

    Couple of notes from my using it at an event: one kind of funny one, using silent mode is a bit dangerous when using anything over low speed shooting. You forget that 30 or 60 even is still really fast. But more seriously, shooting well planned bursts at nearly 8k 12 bit color is really under discussed. you can only get 1ish seconds (4seconds real time) of slow mo burst but it really turns into some great footage. Two, the noise actually is not bad at all, the pictures have turned out great in extremely low light, as has the video. Three, I do miss the resolution of the a7R V, i'm so used to shooting slightly wide for room to crop, and 25mp is pretty noticeable. And I think, finally, the autofocus felt actually a good leap ahead of even the a7R V. I really can't wait for a1ii, I will keep the a9iii with plans to shift to a1ii when it comes out.

    I have the A9iii. I shoot concerts and events and lifestyle portraits. So far, I have been very pleased. Ergonomically, I'd still prefer a Nikon mirrorless camera, but the global shutter is simply too useful to pass on. I shot a Chappell Roan concert Sunday night, and the photographs are gorgeous. Using the Sony 50mm f/1.2 G Master lens, I was able to crop quite a lot and still have poster-worthy prints. Also, the 24-megapixel images are much quicker to edit than the 45/100 megapixel RAW files coming off my Nikon Z7ii and Fujifilm GFX100s. Honestly, these three cameras complement one another incredibly well. Each has its own strengths, and it's great to be able to choose the correct tool for the job.

    I'm so stuck on what to get. I have a A7RV and an A7SIII. I shoot a lot of sports so I want to finally have a high speed camera. I got the A7RV as my A7III was dying and I really like the high resolution which is why I want the A1. But I also really, really don't want to spend that much on a camera that must be getting a successor soon. I'm thinking of getting the A9III and making that my main sports camera with the A7RV as my second camera. Then getting the A1 Mark II as my main and demote the A9III to second camera and retire the A7RV to my portrait only camera. Or I get the A1 then the A1 Mark II and use those as my two sports cameras. I don't know what I'm doing.
    I did get to try the A9III at the reveal event and I did just try the A1 recently shooting minor league baseball and it was great so I may just go with that. My main concern is having autofocus that still lands me the shots I need when the action gets too crazy to keep up with.

    problem with a9iii with indoor, and sports, if you want to use antiflicker, you cant with precapture turned on.. disappointing

      yea it sucks cause of course indoor baskeball sometimes is when u need antiflicker and want precapture.. but yep u gotta turn precapture off to turn it on.. also precapture turns off AF proirity as well. u can only use AF release @@JakeSloan

      No mention of this issue in any reviews I have watched and I am very thankful that you are mentioning it as that would be one of the important feature I thought would be implemented into the system if I was to buy the A9 III. With your current experiences, have you ended up with images with flicker effect in the pre capture mode? Are they bad/visible or un usable?

    • @tagtheshooterphotography2540
      @tagtheshooterphotography2540 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      no real world issue yet.. but i have not shot in venue yet where i would experience it bad. you can look at my video i have on my page of me setting the a9iii for first use. i was experince some color change from electronic score board. had to turn on antiflicker to see if it change it. i did. but also had to turn off precapture.. will test it more

    Main thing for me is no flicker in video.... Thats a game changer, right? In Japan literally half of all lights flicker (and the other half dont)

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Huge, you can still run into flicker if you shutter speed is higher and a multiple of the the flicker frequency but it's much easier to avoid with the a9III

    Bottom line then is if you are willing to wait on the a9 ii then you may be rewarded. A1 being the top line model should incoporate the AI processor, global shutter and 8k filming making it a cinemstographers choice of camera.

    I can't justify a super expensive camera - for now, anyway - but I love your reviews and spectacular scenes, night snow moon shot AB here and others. 🎉For the life of me, I get angry at your views when Philip Bloom gets a ton filming dreary London scapes. Or some goofball AI sounding studio review. 🎉There are plenty of things to get angry about in the world, but You Tube ridiculous "algorithm" setting make my blood boil. 🎉I screen grabbed that moon and AB shot. 🎉🎉🎉 You need a Outdoor Boyz collaboration.

    I have an a9 and an a1... the a9 3 global shutter is nice the 120fps are definetly nice, but I find the a1's 30fps still enough for my bird photography. I don't havr hummingbirds here and for kingfishers 30 is good :)
