  • Jack and Cal break down West Ham's 0-3 loss at the London Stadium to Chelsea in the Premier League. They discuss the Hammer's problematic numbers compared to other teams in the hunt for a European spot, the advantages and disadvantages of a 3-2-5 shape both in and out of possession, Lopetegui's idealistic approach to profiling and how it's negatively impacted West Ham's current form and much more.

it must be so much more frustrating to watch when you have an in depth tactical knowledge

Good discussion as ever. For all of Lopetegui 's talk of evolution, not revolution post Moyes, we've not seen any of his expected pragmatic approach and that does not excuse players not showing basic footballling commonsense, such as making the easy pass to the spare player. Liverpool game an opportunity to see Todibo, Soler and Fulkrug start and tighten midfield and defence up.

I appreciate there are problems all over the field, but is one the main issues dealing with LP10, who seems to me at least, does his own thing, as well as being not in form for what feels like the last 12months? Drop LP10. Play JCT not Mavropanos too. Better decision making.

We all appreciate the in-depth analysis. I especially like the discussion about what we are trying to do on attack in the 3-2-5, and agree we are one good decision away (extra pass?) from getting some real quality chances.
The other thing I agree with is that the team seems to be totally overwhelmed with trying to understand everything regarding all these different structures. We look slow, we look confused, we look late to respond... especially on that transition to defense.
I'd advise that Lopetegui plays what these players clearly understand and then SLOWLY and METHODICALLY layer on the concepts of new structures. It might look a little like Moyesball at first, but I'd rather we first be a tough defense that concedes little than a variable structured team that in the end allows goals way too easily. Nobody truly seems to know their roles. When we do attempt something new like an aggressive high press... let's not try to execute it against any of the Top 4 teams for the time being.

Completely agree, we need to go back to the basics, get the players familiar with each other and then attempt more complex formations having set a foundation.

Like we did two years ago. Suddenly people are seeing why we did things the way we did. This is a results business, teams that play pretty football and lose change managers.

Also as much as JWP frustrated me off the ball I just still think loaning him out has harmed us more than it helps us

Great analysis of our situation. If one stands back and looks at the bigger picture I don't think Europe is on the cards.
Moyes found a cheat code with a squad that was not intrinsically ready for Europe on pure quality. If we play by the rules of more expansive football we are competing with Chelsea, United, Newcastle in an area where they are all set up. They also have a lot more money than we do. Although Chelsea have a new coach Poch left them a very good foundation.
In a fair fight we are 9th at best. Man city, Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle, Spurs, United. Which one of those are we going to finish above? We would have to punch above our weight. To beat one or two of those teams we had to start well. To do it now we ill have to finish like champions..
This season looks like a transition with maybe a cup run and mid table.

AWB, is a very good right back winning ball and roaming up pitch. He is more limited as a player standing or receiving the ball beyond the opponent half. I am SHOCKED and astounded that Lopetegui didn't appear to know it. Madness set up.

As per your previous video about Paqueta I think it’s such a big part of this. Love the bloke and so talented but he restricts us. Reminds me of Bruno Fernandes simultaneously being Man Utd’s only world class player and the player that restricts their patterns the most

    • @markmann860
      @markmann860 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Yes, seems to me Paq was perfect for Moyes' setup. He tries to play a quick defence-splitting pass usually to Bowen, who makes the right runs. With luck, once in a game it works and we score. And the other 5 or 6 times when it doesn't work, the rest of our team hasn't pushed up out of its defensive shape so we're not vulnerable to the counter. With Lopetegui's system, Paq still trying to play the same balls but the full-backs have pushed way up expecting the wide pass, so we're exposed defensively to the counter.

You say "I still don't think we know what our best system is", but, to look on the bright side, at least we know what our worst system is; we saw it on Saturday.

Clear to me that we haven’t got the spine in the team that we need and it’s playing out with too many different variations to try to find one that works. We didn’t sign the striker we needed and/or haven’t yet given Fullkrug the chance to settle. Add to that a real mess of a central midfield and you’re in trouble. We haven’t got obvious first choices in there and Paqueta, the probable essential element, is still a showboating liability. The manager needs to work out what the best pairing is and give it a proper go. Having said all that …. We’ve lost 3 games which I’d have expected us to lose and are unbeaten away from home. It’s not a disaster. Needs to use the EFL match to play his first team and really try to gel against a weakened Liverpool side

This is not a new problem. The Kalvin Phillips experiment was an attempt to address that issue. We also have an issue at CB. We played Zouma last season too much because we was the most consistent CB even though he couldn't run in the end. Aguerd was injured a lot and Mavropanos is very error prone. In the end he just ran out of gas and we shipped goals.
If the CB positions are fixed it will help a lot. Players will improve when they feel confident the system is working.

So basically stats you just said, shows we continued the bad form that we ended with Moyes. Players showed they are not capable of making a simple passes or to press as a team.
If Lopetegui plans to have a job here, he needs to be ruthless and to drop bunch of players. Its only way that will work for him. He can not rely on some of the players do something that they arent capable of.

Jack... Pray tell, W. H.Y do we keep buying so many SLOW to average paced players, especially in the middle of the engine room. Our reaction time, became of lack of fast twitch fibres, is to often 2 seconds behind. I believe that's why Moyes mostly chose to play low block, Park the bus football.

It’s currently worse than last season. No player has thrived under Jlo unfortunately, I fear the dye is cast, I would give him no more than the next thee games, no improvement = no job.
