Whether factory or heavily customized, the ’32 Ford has a gorgeous appeal, but why is that? Chip Foose sat down with a pen and our cameras to share his thoughts about how this 87-year-old design is still relevant today.

His shop manager said his finished drawing are $10,000 a piece. He does some good TH-cam videos explaining a lot.
It’s amazing that his three minute sketches are great examples of our automotive art. He’s an artist that is just as good with paper and pen as he is with English Wheel and Paint.
My dad is a really great artist and my dad was drawing cars from memory my dad has been into cars ever since he was a kid. He would get on his bike and go looking for car parts which he knew alot of the farmers and they would either give him parts or he would do some farm work for them. My dad love to put a model cars together and draw cars. I was really amazed how he could draw a car 3 dementional which would should a top view a side view. When my dad was in shop class when he was 16 his dad my grandpa happen to find a 32 ford 5 window coupe on a farm which was not to far from the local dirt track and lots of guys passed through and some didn't think it was a 32 ford and they passed on it. Anyways my Grandpa bought the car and brought it home and thought it would take a lot of work to fix and so he decided to give it to my dad so my grandpa decided to build his 29 model a 5 window coupe. It just so happens my dad was good friends with the guys who had the 32. My dads 32 ford 5 window was a Moon shine runner which my dad took me over to the place when I was a kid and they told me and my dad the story behind the car and the original owner of the car. My dad was also a body man never went to school he just happen to have the talent. He actually got a job at a body shop and learned on the job. Another thing my dad could do was make his own Toy metal cars when he was a kid. He told me how he would use old lacker paint thinner cans and he would cut the cans open flatten the tin out and then draw the body on the tin then cut it out then he would bend it and shape it. For his frame he would use old radios which had metal frames and then he would get some old outside TV antennas to make the axles. My dad said when you lived out on the farm you could not go to town often. he said you had to make things happen to have fun or entertaining. He also had a sand box and would play with gravel trucks. My Grandpa was also build model airplanes. He made homemade go carts for my dad. My grandpa built a 332 police interceptor engine for his 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 2 door post which it happened to be a Police car it had a old spot light on it. My Grandpa had lots of different brands of cars and had great things to say about all of them but my Grampa and Dad loved the old Fords probably more my dad the Grandpa. But my dad could tell any car if he saw just hair of it coming far down the road of saw it clear on a farm in tall weeds even if you could not see it. That's how good he was knowing his cars. My Grandpa was strange he loved old Ford cars and pickups but for some reason he loved GMC and Chevy pickups saying they never say as high from the factory as a Ford which he claims they were easy to get in and get out of. My dad's younger Brother my uncle was also a Mechanic and somehow he liked the Ford pickups better he also circle tracked Fords and he restored old tractors.
Haven't seen Foose for years, his designs are now a classic, now he's become one of the old time hot rodders, also remember watching American hot rod, focusing on Boyd Coddington hot rod shop it was the first custom car show I ever watched
Jup i watched too. Every episode and the only guy i thought was an ass was the shop foreman.

Awe I bet if you keep practicing it will how do you think Chip got like that from doing it over and over again once you get line's and circles down packed then you put them together you will come up with drawings.
There's your first issue. It's not a Sharpie. It's a Prismacolor art marker.

@@kentbullard6917 talent is an excuse used by those too lazy to practice, skills are developed, maybe some people have it easier than others, but I've seen people with no hands painting beautiful pieces, so if you want to do it, you have to start somewhere.

Has anyone else noticed these guys , including his competitors all have the ability to draw the cars they wanna build Iv'e watched a lot of these guys and they all are artists and probably started out that way !!
Being an artist myself , when l first saw Chip Foose doing his car designs on Overhaulin l was in awe, this guy is a genius in automotive art design especially when it comes to hot rods , many thanks fir sharing this 👍
Theres so many interesting ideas to do with that generation of ford the fact that people still come up with ideas is what gives so much freedom to do anything you can imagine on them

I had a classmate in high school that used to do drawings of hot rods and sell them for lunch money. I often wonder if he was able to make a career out of it.
Are plenty people passionate for design myself included but is hard to have finance to pay for design school because is very expensive specially (since i'm European to go at Pininfarina or Ital Design studio for 3 years course class (with inhouse-accommodation and 2 meals /day) would be way much that i afford close to 30.000$ /each year x 3 years (for diploma certified - junior designer) = 90.000$ (I know expensive) but with the full course of x6 years (certified - designer stylist) same conditions will be 180.000$ go figure).. Now if Mr. Foose will kindly decide to do his Online Master course for - Car Design & Car Body Styling will be something better because would be way more many people around the world that would watch him online at work, will learn faster from him since he knows how to explain all things he does and why he does them.. I think it will help a lot for his channel also to share skills to future generations to be at least half creative as he is and still it will be something better ! no doubts in my mind.. stay safe in peace ! ;0)

Good morning Chip, the absolute ease and effortless ability that you have really amazes me. Years ago at the Auburn auto auction you drew a deuce coupe and a thunderbolt for me. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. They are still beautiful and framed in my office today. Great memories. Thanks and good luck on you and your wife's car.
So, why haven't we heard/seen Chip Foose around lately (past 5-10 years)?

In high school, I would spend most of my classes sketching my (first car) 87 Nissan Sentra 2 door. Just like that. Learning the wheel wells and body lines threw pen and paper. I had so many hopes and dreams for that car. Some including a 4x4 frame. And also street stock. I truly miss those days. I ove cars. I never got past regular maintaince but loved that car so much.

My dad's friend has a 32 ford coop that's been in their family since 32 that runs perfectly and had somechow remain completely unmodified and just sitting in it still makes you glad seatbelts exist.

The 32 5 Window Coupe is always been my favorite hot rod and the 55 Chevy 210 Sedan it's always been my second favorite
Now that was cool. Would love to have the ability to see things in my mind and transfer to paper.
This has been my favorite car for 30 years now. I'm in my mid 40's & built this car model twice as a teen & always wanted a real one . Would even love a kit car reproduction since a real one is way too expensive .

ITS JUST NOT FAIR. I can scratch on paper for hours trying to get the detail and shape and he comes in with the marker pens that have little control of the shape or sharp lines and you look like you took a picture of it running. Its why he is the no., one car designer in the world!! His talent is unchallenged

In all seriousness, this man “gets it” and perfectly articulates what we “see” in certain cars or designs. Just extremely beautiful, elegant designs that’ll remain timeless, like the statues of ancient civilizations, you can only stare in awe!

Yes or sell a book if copies of all his drawings and a little something about the car/truck why he came up with the design. Those book's if not all would sell out off the shelf it would make the best seller of the year.
My daughter is a natural at free hand sketching and has made some great animal sketches and dragons, with color blends just like Chip. I need her to watch this master at work so she can improve. She's only 14 , so has a long way to go to get to be like Foose.
His ten second sketch is better than anything I could ever draw.
Who can argue with Mr. Foose, timeless & quite an achievement for designers of that era. If anyone is familiar with Bushtec trailers, you'll understand their fascination with the '32 in the design of their 'Roadstar' model.

Chip, you are absolutely right about the 32 Ford. Explaining the genius inspired design by drawing it, makes that fact perfectly clear to "us"..."we" dullards! lol! You being the incredible artist you are, can think and draw in 3 dimensions. Maybe even into the 4th and 5th dimensions ! lol !.
I think the one my Uncle has is a '32... He's had all sorts of cool cars and motorbikes. I remember his awesome '72 (I think) Corvette Stingray... Gods that was an awesome car...

First thing you are taught in design school : First measure wheel base and draw wheels then build on that. Foose starts in the front 3/4 view with the radiator and builds on that.....he has done that 32 drawing so often he knows the dimensions by feel.
Thinking the shorter door on the convertible might be for strength and rigidity. This was a great episode. Thanks Mr Foose.

This is a great video. 32 ford is my favorite car of all time and I had no idea about the differences in the bodies . What was it like designing the boyster and having it come to life for the 1st time?

Actually the 1932 Ford "18" (V8) is the iconic model; the 1932 model "B" mounted the obsolete Model "A" 4 banger engine but both did use the same bodies for the year.
I just wish I could draw like that. I couldn't draw flies on a hot day in august.
I'm a big Fan Chip, they make brand new 1932-34 in San Francisco they build about 6 car's a year they look like the old body but new up grades. BB KING bought one Gorge Lucous bought one Clint Eastwood quit a few other famous people own one of those FORD'S that come out that shop in San Francisco.

I like Chip Foose's 32 5 window coupe with the blown flathead.
A lot of guys wanted to take a original 5 window back in the day and turn it into a roadster which that is part of the reason why 5 window coupes are even harder to get plus the dirt track racers made modifieds out of them.
Great video Chip, as to the doors, the roadster only had 2 hinges so the door was shorter to reduce weight, the 3 and 5 window had 3 hinges so could support extra weight of longer door.
I always figured the door on the coupe was short cuz with the top down, you didn't need the room to get in..body vs just legs.
Can't wait to see what your wife's 32 is going to look like.
Your Brass 1932 that is going to resemble a Dusson Burge that I hope I live long enough to see! Yes I thought I seen Every kinda 1932 been done, but the Brass car like the old trombone, saxophone all the other brass bands tribute car to that Erie when they had full bands in the 20's 30's and 40's
This is why this man is an automotive God.
I’ve restored a number of 30-34 fords and chevys and the biggest pain is getting it straight around the hinges they suck. And the fenders suck just as much. But the hard work and attention to detail pay off in the end.

Styling genius at work.
The frame on the Model T and Model A was also covered up with the running boards so you could not even see the frame at all unless you built a fenderless car.
