She can be pretty dumb at times with her approaches to the game especially the multiple times shes fallen off a cliff because shes reading chat and still complains. I always have a soft spot for DS2. You are completely right about how experimental it is, and I really appreciate that about it. For example, I like the idea of enemies despawning. I also like the abundance of NPCs to summon, Lucatiel's story, and the theme of ambitious women who drive kings to ruin. And I loved the feeling of powerstancing great/large clubs and pancaking the enemies. I'll never get the special rings for deathless and no bonfire runs, and I'll never beat Sir Alonne hitless, but I still love it all the same.
Likewise about the rings but dark souls 2 is hands down my favourite game in the series. The human enemy bosses are a good thing in my eyes, the overlapping level design leading to a sense of wonder and faux size. The storyline is awesome, Vendrik being misled into a war just for Nashandra's endless appetite to the dark, the story of the Milfanito. I also unironically prefer the combat in 2. Yes there are problems and I wouldn't say otherwise, but it's still my favourite game in the series.
@@TimothyGod Dark Souls 2 has two insane challenges built into it. Illusory ring of a conqueror. Illusory ring of the Exalted. Conqueror, beat the game without dying. Exalted, beat the game without using a bonfire.
If you are going for these rings, do not skip the ending credits as it can mess up the reward. They are perhaps the hardest things From Soft have put into their games. (thankfully they aren't achievements)
Before elden ring it was the only one with power stancing and it's still the only one you can I fuse elements on boss weapons. Infusing moonlight greatsword with magic so it's has more magic damage was brilliant
@@hibarikyoya854Powerstancing, yes, but not dual-wielding from innate special weapon properties, such as Brigand Daggers. I can only speak on Daggers but I found them the most fun dual-wield/PS moveset to use amongst all in DS3, even compared to ER!
I don't agree to the "many flaws" (it has some, but some things some people see as flaws I see as strengths, for instance agility stat, slow combat pacing, unreal world connections), but I agree to the dreaminess-thing. Fuck, I love this game - way more than any other soulsborne (except bloodborne wich I don't know due to the lack of a PC port).
It always bothers me people don't get this. It's taught early on that you don't want to aggro the whole map. Running away is a last resort. I like this because it's an incentive to methodically explore levels and not just sprint through. To me this game is more chill than DS3 for that reason. You aren't meant to be spam dodging and healing. Just lots of good 1v1 battles
@@3ericwyeah 1v1 battles when the majority of rooms have like 6 enemies both meelee and ranged, I finished ds2 sotfs yesterday for the first time, and it wasn't fun like ds1 which I loved, it has serious artificial-difficulty moments
@@3ericw That's horrible game philosophy though. If I've already explored an area, why would I want to continue killing the same enemies over and over to get back to where I died. That's just a massive time dump. The levels shouldn't generally force you to have to clear every time, that just becomes tedious as all hell for no reason.
I went back to get all the trophies on DS2 last December and felt very nostalgic going back to it, hopefully we will see you do a deathless run at somepoint 😅
Dark Souls 2, while extraordinarily different and definitely considered the black sheep of the soulsborne series, is 100% my personal favorite Dark Souls game. It was my first introduction into the series courtesy of TheMediaCows old DS2 playthrough and from there I was hooked not only onto the Souls series, but RPGs in general. Sure it has many questionable decisions and many aspects of it are less than stellar, but it holds a special place in my heart and I will always consider it one of my favorite games of all time. Besides, the world, RPG elements, and gameplay are all uniquely catered to my individual tastes my pure happenstance
I don't think I would say that Dark Souls 2 is my favorite game in the franchise, objectively saying, DS3 would take that title. But there's something about it that I can't quite explain and it holds a special place in my heart that the others don't. It's the from soft game I have the less hours played, but it's the only one I finished only once, so it's the one I took the longest to finish on my first playthrough. The reason for that is the level design, it's the only from soft game that, in my experience, what killed me over and over again were not the bosses, but the levels. And this made me get a lot of souls from corpse runs and spend it on trying different equipment. Because of that, it was the only from soft game that the rpg elements really flourished to me in the first run, when usually I'm the one who sticks to the first weapon I like using. But replaying those levels the last thing I want so I'll probably never touch the game again
Don’t feel bad. As someone who’s played all the games ds2 just wasn’t for me I tried to force myself through it same as you, and I think it’s hilarious we quit at the dumbass chaos king that boss is awful
same, i defeated every main game boss (except last) and also defeated fume knight but after defeating him i realised that i am just wasting my time and i got so bored from this game. Never playing ds2 again in my future
@@indoserver1345i was in the same boat and couldn’t for the life of me me get into this game. I tried the seeker of fire 2.0 mod for ds2 and it actually made the game much more enjoyable. I’d definitely give it a shot if you’re ever interested in playing ds2 again
...no, its because it has sloppy design choices. i never read peoples thoughts on 2 when i played it and i came to the conclusion on my own that it was sooooo boring.
This video gave me ptsd flashbacks of my own time when I forced myself to finish this game. Throughout my entire playthrough I kept saying to myself that it's all going to be worth it and surely the ending will be satisfying despite me having absolutely zero fun so far. Well it wasn't worth it and honestly I just regret putting myself through it. The entire game was a slog and I should've just dropped it the moment I realized I'm not having any fun instead of forcing it. I guess it's been a learning experience one way or another.
Dark Souls II is specifically not designed to be rushed through, even compared to something like a DS3, Elden Ring or Sekiro. Everyone looking for that kind of experience will get dissapointed. This might simply not be a game for speedrunners. They went for an old school design with this game, which i highly appreciate btw. Planty of hectic "modern" games out there. Very few games of this quality are forcing a methodical and slower paced approach nowadays.
I get where you’re coming from however I still don’t agree that the slow play style works with souls games. Having to play through awfully placed and obnoxious enemies at a slow pace just makes the game repetitive and frustrating. Especially when it comes to boss runbacks. I like the idea they were going for but i don’t think they executed it well.
Having to kill the relatively strong enemies before the executioner chariot fight 12 times was just annoying and tedious. The boss fight itself was also gimmicky and kinda annoying imo. Another thing that pushes me away is that I usually like playing Souls PVP but the netcode and general floatiness of the animations feels the worst to me out of the souls games.
Dark Souls 2 is in a superposition where it is simultaneously the best Souls game and the worst one too. Like it does so many things wrong but it also does so many things right.
Man, I loved DkS2 back when it released. The lore was kind of weird and didn’t have the same impact on me as when I discovered the original, but it had fantastic fashion, the multiplayer was my favorite of any From game, and I loved the challenge of it. The DLCs were also great. It’s the kind of game you can really sink your teeth into.
This is the only souls game where I didnt want to listen to metal music while playing it. It just felt calmer and casual, compared to the absolute epicness of dark souls 3 and sekiro, the aggresiveness of elden ring and bloodborne, and the methodical pace of dark souls 1 and demons souls.
Oh fun fact about this game. If you look deep into fromsoft lore, the first games they ever created were the kings field series, and shadow tower as well. While miyazaki was clearly innovated with demons souls and dark souls by kings field, shadow tower and shadow tower abyss were both worked on by the main director of Dark souls 2, which is interesting considering the differences of dark souls 2.

Everyone was talking up the DLC as so amazing and I got to it and was just like wtffff it's literally the worst gank squad situation all over. I hated how every boss was so easy (except for some DLC bosses), but getting to the bosses was out of this world!
Whoever designed DS2 just thought DS as a series was hard because it threw too many enemies at you. They did not once consider level design(hence why you go up an elevator to the bottom of a volcano), or enemy placement at all.
@@Zeratultheking Not only do you go up an elevator to the bottom of a volcano, you go up an elevator, while you're inside and already near the top of a broken tower whose top you can see from the outside, into the bottom of a volcano.
The DLC is the best of the game. And most of peoples problem is playing it like fools running by everything, when the mechanics very clearly are designed to force… you know, engaging with the game. It punishes how everyone plays the other Soulslike games by rushing by 99% of it. That’s on you. Vanilla isn’t even bad about that. And other than Smelter Demon run and the Co-Op areas of the DLC, the Scholar version isn’t either really… if you actually play through the game rather than run through it. Game has so many legitimate problems but most people focus on their self inflicted issue of not being able to cheese it by running by easily to magic door
@elvickRULES There's a reason why DS2 is the bastard son of the series. I played DS2 just like you said, didn't act like a fool just running past everything and the ads on the way to the bosses were 10x harder than any boss in the DLC. All this work to get a mess of a boss. Which makes the game not as enjoyable or rewarding as the others. And ya you're right thats not even the worst part about DS2. OP was definitely getting punished for trying to run past everything, but to her credit she was trying to feel out a path for a deathless run. You cannot fight every rank and file enemy and brush past every gank squad if you want to do a deathless run. Its possible, but not feasible.
Honestly by the time you got to lost sinner, the rule of thumb is to question everything much like poke the chest in DS3 you never know when the game is gonna throw you a wrench against you. Some of these were obvious that you took them for sure. But yes this game is harder to enjoy it, certainly watching go through brought memories for sure
All her problems with the game could've been solved if she did not try to run past enemies. That strat works for the other Souls games not DS2. You have to kill them if you want to comfortably explore the game. The enemies stalk you forever.

I like the game and still would say it’s a bad game but not for that reason because I don’t play like an idiot doing the same thing over and over hoping it finally works instead of just changing how I engage with a different type of experience

Dark souls 2 is like: "remember how annoying Blighttown and Depths was in DS1? How about we make essentially all of the starting areas that annoying? Also, remember how impalanced multi-boss fights were in DS1? How about we double down with every other boss fight being a multi-boss? Oh, and remember how the cluniciness of DS's mechanics separated it from other TP-fighting games? Bet people would love it if they were even cluncier ..." In my opinion, DS2 is like the culmination of the worst lessons the developers could've possibly taken from the success of it's predecessor.
PvP was the reason people played this game. ADP made PvP, and you could also cancel attacks for mix-ups. Fight clubs at Iron Keep. Loved it. PvE Garbage
@ 52:05 you can see the Key to the Embedded appear on the ground and rotate into your character's hands, before they use it. I'm not sure that it is supposed to work that way, but it looks really cool! That was shortly after the enemy glitched out, and wouldn't get back up, even with HP remaining, so your game might have just needed a reset.
DS2 gives me this strange nostalgic feeling, even though my first playthrough was only a few years ago. I think it's the music, it's kind of haunting...only way I'm able to explain it xD
I recently played and finished DS1R for the first time, mostly blind, and absolutely loved it. I was excited to play DS2. After about 4.5 hours of fighting with the game's shit movement and camera controls, horrid hit boxes, enemies recovering from being stunned and hitting me back during my 2nd swing, enemies seemingly having infinite poise, enemy attacks with ZERO fucking windup and thus no counter-play (guaranteed damage) EDIT: rereading this I think what I actually meant was enemy attacks where the damage is applied to you on the first frame or 2 instead of during or at the end of the attack so you have no chance of reacting to it without taking damage :EDIT, absolutely bullshit enemy attack tracking, arguably unfair enemy placement at times, and other stuff I can't remember at the moment, I quit, uninstalled, and went straight to DS3. If you love DS2, by all means love it. Screw my opinion of it, play what you like. But holy shit i hate it with a passion.
I can't say my experience was the same as yours, especially when it comes to animations and such, but I have my own problems with the game. With most of the Souls games but especially DS2 I think knowing stuff some of it's quirks before playing smooths things out beforehand. Unfortunately with DS1 I'd already watched a bunch of videos to convince myself to buy a controller to finally play it but by then I already knew too much about the game to be surprised and had an optimal build. I also feel like there's some stuff that is so good I couldn't justify playing around with anything else (e.g. FaP ring, Havel's Armor, Grass Crest Shield). DS2 is something I have fond memories of because I had to muddle through it on my own, cheese and all. Things like Adaptability = i-frames (still an insane decision decision) and that being patient clearing enemies one by one is the better way to go most of the time. I do think it feels slippery and sludgy but that's something I had a problem with in DS1 too, at least jumping controls are a bit more natural. I feel like if the fog doors weren't passable without killing mobs it might set expectations for the player better. The huge amount of enemies, ambushes and limited i-frames on fog doors seem like they're trying to discourage you from rushing past them, but in practice most players are like me and will try to run anyway. Was a very different design philosophy from the first game.
@@yuza1032that’s why enemies despawn to balance the runs to the boss. It’s very clear to Me that the intent was to discourage how people don’t engage with the previous games as intended and just run by everything. But despite that they knew they had to balance it out a bit if they make you take the enemies down. Most of the movement jank is from lack of full 360 movement. I think it’s like 16 point movement or something stupid. And the lock on is trash but it’s still trash in Elden Ring too so 🤷♂️
DS2 is in such a weird place. I started my souls experience with it, and in some ways it's my favorite of the series. But holy fuck does it have some downsides! ADP is a problem, some of the boss and area designs are too shallow. I feel like it would benefit with less areas and them being more fleshed out? Though, I do like that it's linear, but you can choose different paths. That made it way more replayable than DS3 for me. And playing DS1 after 2 and 3 - I just couldnt get into it. I have played DS2 so much cant seem to enjoy it anymore though, but that took me over 700 hours....

Park has it instilled in her brain that ds2 can't be good, and its honestly not a bad thing. She can be pretty dumb at times with her approaches to the game especially the multiple times shes fallen off a cliff because shes reading chat and still complains. The fact that she has to constantly remind herself to be open minded towards the game but naturally regresses back to the complaining state shows that she is genuinely not enjoying the game and thats okay.
@@elvickRULESwhat if you didnt have to kill every enemy in the area 12 times to be able to progress without constant ganking? would it be a worse game for that?
@@MrShitcakes69 You don't have to, especially in vanilla DS2 since they didn't just copy/paste enemies everywhere thinking that was a good idea.
In fact some areas in DS2 have so few enemies that they seem pointless. But people don't know what they're talking about with the problems that DS2 actually has because they just meme it and call it a day.
Let me posit YOU a question. What if you engaged with a game based on the mechanics it actually has rather than engage with the game based on the mechanics it doesn't? Which do you think will result in a better time?

It always bothers me people don't get this. It's taught early on that you don't want to aggro the whole map. Running away is a last resort. I like this because it's an incentive to methodically explore levels and not just sprint through. To me this game is more chill than DS3 for that reason.
I liked it, it was my first souls, but i like blood borne and dark souls 3 better, and of course elden ring but dark souls 2 is still good.
@@Whattatwistbased opinion. Bloodborne is my all time favorite if we're talking every soulsborne game instead of just dark souls
That's usually how it goes. The first game you play is the favorite

This video gave me ptsd flashbacks of my own time when I forced myself to finish this game. Throughout my entire playthrough I kept saying to myself that it's all going to be worth it and surely the ending will be satisfying despite me having absolutely zero fun so far. @@zzodysseuszz Playframe. Dan Floyd (and Dan Jones) of Playframe unironically consider it to be the BEST game of the trilogy.
The game feels kinda it was made by someone who only knew dark souls through memes and rage quit TH-cam compilations.

Oh, and remember how the cluniciness of DS's mechanics separated it from other TP-fighting games? Bet people would love it if they were even cluncier ..."
In my opinion, DS2 is like the culmination of the worst lessons the developers could've possibly taken from the success of it's predecessor.

It’s very clear to
Me that the intent was to discourage how people don’t engage with the previous games as intended and just run by everything. But despite that they knew they had to balance it out a bit if they make you take the enemies down.
Most of the movement jank is from lack of full 360 movement. I think it’s like 16 point movement or something stupid. And the lock on is trash but it’s still trash in Elden Ring too so 🤷♂️

DS2 Scholar of the First Sin is my favorite Dark Souls game. Took PVP to the next level, still miss the PVP covenants and rewards. The fire aura you had around your body if you had over a couple hundred PVP kills was dope. Amazing DLC with some awesome bosses. introduced powerstancing which Elden Ring adopted. Bonfire ascetics allowing you to fight bosses over and over. Introduced tons of new magic like hexes. The game is definitely underrated. Fun fact, it’s actually the best reviewed game of the dark souls trilogy. It gets a bad rap
ds2 deathless would be an achievment!
I actually got had, thought the fire alarm beeping was my fridge 😔
I remember going through this game and about halfway through I knew it would be my only playthrough of Ds2. I don't think the game is horrible it just wasn't for me.
lmfao the npc just shouting “who are you” has me dead
How is this deathless is she dies so many times? Genuine question
Please please please do a Lies of P walkthrough!! Game is so good!
Definitely not the best of the Souls games but it does have my favorite DLCs and some of my favorite weapons. It'd be cool to see DS2 remade in DS3's engine, that would be pretty sick
Ds1, ds3, and bloodborne all have better dlc.
@@Pearlem It's not really a matter of what's better or worse. It's a matter of which DLCs I enjoy, DS1 DLC isn't bad but I'm not super into it, DS3 DLC 1 was pretty meh, Ringed City is great, haven't touched Bloodborne but its DLC does look amazing. Regardless I still like DS2 iron and ivory DLCs a lot more than DS1 DLC and DS3's Ashes
Fromsoft has used the same engine for all their games since Demon's Souls.
@@tinminator8905 I know it uses havok physics engine but based on what on what I read it's a branched off different engine from DS1, 3, BB etc. But for BB, DS3 and onward they used a revamped version of the DS1/DeS engine
@@lllXanderlll They are not using the havoc engine, they use an in house engine that uses some of the havoc engine's base for physics and such. For every single one of their games they revise the engine. That is how in house engines are. Games get more complicated and different functionality is needed. DS2 uses different file formats and has some internal structuring that differs, but that is not the engine.
Wait, did she just... not finish the game after so much struggle?
Understandable
trashy
'I will try to keep an open mind'.
Proceeds to bitch and moan throughout the entire game -.-
Cause it’s a shit game
Agreed. This was my first DS and after my initial attempts and getting annihilated by enemies, something clicked and it just stuck with me. I played it consistently for a couple of years, NG+ and beyond, several character builds... I love this game. I love the level design of DS but DS2 is the one! (IMHO...)
I didt finish ds2 bc i didnt enjoy it, so props to u for playing it that long
If you dont Like it, is because this game is not for you...
For my part, I really like DS2 and not DS.. gustos..
