Despite my lack of interest in musicians like Bach and Scarlatti, I found myself enjoying Mr Chens performance of the G major Sonata by Scarlatti. It was delightful !
Quelle élégance, quelle sobriété et quelle poétique expression dans cette 1ère Ballade! Toute l'âme de Chopin est là.

I've only just discovered Kevin Chen. I was delighted with his performance of Ballade No,1 by Chopin. Very very accomplished indeed !

It is interesting to compare this recital with Jayson Gillham's in the same Festival. In the Chopin etudes Jayson was prepared to take risks, even at the expense of wrong notes. It was as if he were discovering them in the moment. Kevin isn't that kind of player. An impeccable technique, he plays as if he doesn't want to let go of his remarkable control. He is still a very young man of course, so it will be interesting to see if he becomes more of a discoverer. He comes across as the competition prizewinner he undoubtedly is, but I would prefer a little more 'danger' and personal stamp on the music.
I had to look up who Jayson Gillham was and linked in his Wikipedia entry was 6th place in the Leeds International Piano Competition, no listing in the Cliburn, no listing in the Chopin Competition although the links were given. You must be his biggest fan but don't you think you do him a great disservice by comparing him to Kevin Chen? You write about the risks that Gillham takes in the Chopin Etudes as being admirable risk taking, wrong notes and all, well I am pretty sure that Jayson Gillham in his wildest dreams could only wish to be able to play them as Kevin does : here Chopin Op 10 th-cam.com/video/dnvsLW2tnb4/w-d-xo.html and here Op 25 th-cam.com/video/oprmW3Myqv8/w-d-xo.html What more risks does Mr. Chen have to take to play them like that when most pianists will never ever be able to play them at those tempos with that musicality and accuracy?
Jeeze: it must be them there cold and lonely winters: Canada churns out an enormous number of superstar pianists. Korea, too. Mind you. they have a much bigger population. And the Russians, as always. Chen’s Chopin is very measured, very Rubinstein-esque, that way. I wonder if the tiny audience realizes what there listening to? The massive talent. The triple trill, quad trill: few pianists-including the greats-can do what I heard. Perfection.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
