I switched from Coros Vertex to TREX2 in December, and while I can’t comment on the Ultra, I can say that I agree with many points on the brand. First, HR is hit or miss. However, Coros HR problems has their own HR problems. I try and stick with HR band when I’m concerned about accuracy, regardless. I love everything else about the watch except the Strava integration. They don’t send elevation data to Strava so Strava has to use its own topography maps to estimate elevation gains. When training for a mountain/elevation race, having an accurate reading of total elevation gain is crucial. Strava’s estimate reduces total elevation by 30-45%. It’s ugly.

Using their old gen sensors in this $400 watch is a massive fail when they got them in the $200 GTR 4. Accurate data trumps all and the new sensors are much better.
i'm using instinct solar from 2020. since then, i've sent it 3 time for warranty claim. random shut down and battery issues. the problem persist, even they have replaced it with new one. it's my first garmin watch. do you think its just bad batch or does garmin really not that reliable?
This might be a stupid question as I’m a newbie, but if the only problem is the HRM, does having a Bluetooth chest strap get around that problem considering the price difference between GARMIN and amazfit ?
Great review. Its very appealing but as you mentioned on the video the heart rate sensor is very DISAPPOINTING. I don’t understand WHY Amazfit will launch 2nd new watch after the GTR 4 with “improve heart rate sensor” and still use the old heart rate sensor. I could by for another $100 a new Garmin 965 with better performance all around (gps, heart rate, mapping, music, etc) non military specs. Yes, I agree with you that Amazfit is moving in the right direction with mapping , gps but cannot get the heart rate right. Can you please make a short review of the heart rate sensor on the GTR 4.
Gtr4 heart rate Its not so good as well. I tried for a week and returned. Too many bugs overall including the same old problems from gtr3 ( errors in the music upload. Bugs on the apps you download...very disappointing. In short: you get what you pay for
Hi, Great review, it just you didnt mention whether it has s depth sensor and if it shows depth in freediving mode? Amazfit claims it does in the specs yet for some reason no reviews mention that important upgrade feature. Or maybe amazfit misleading about this. So does it have a depth meter and shows depth info on display? Supposedly it has an automatic diving and surface interval timer on display in freediving mode too. Can you confirm that? Thanks
If you want a sports watch I would say that a decent heartrate monitor should be the top priority and then you can skimp on things like social media notifications and music for all I care. Also build quality comes to mind and while this watch is designed a bit like the Rambo knife's with built in needle compass, fishing line and first aid kit, sometimes less is more if it includes top quality components instead of flashy 'eye candy'. Personally I want my sports watch to be a tough as nails and focussing purely on the sports aspect. I don't care about golf, fishing, dancing, playing computer games, or social media notifications, and would much rather that those resources/money were spent on quality. I think the closest I can get to that these days for the lowest price is the Fenix 7 sapphire solar, which certainly isn't a cheap watch but probably lasts better than most others and even carry a decent second had price if you want to upgrade as the new model's come onto the market.
It took me 5 minutes to download a map of my town to the watch. And, while i did have to download another app, it did give me turn by turn directions (through Google maps on my phone phone, lol).
For loading maps at the trailhead, could you try connecting the watch to your mobile hotspot and then do it? Seems like that'd be a workaround the Wi-Fi issue.
The only upgrade from the T-Rex 2,is the built quality. And they ask 400 euro, for this smartwatch...this is a joke(no titanium and no sapphire glass). The zepp app, need a lot improvements, and the sensors too.If it had newer sensors,NFC,better price and official service in Greece...maybe I would consider buying it.
I am a competitive swimmer and currently use both a Garmin Swim 2 and an Amazfit T-Rex 3 and Huaway 8. However, I have encountered some discrepancies in the data collected by the T-Rex 3. In particular, the T-Rex 3 seems to be overly generous when monitoring heart rates compared to the other devices. The average heart rate recorded during the training session of 1.30 hours by the Garmin Swim 2 was 134 bpm, while the T-Rex 3 showed 144 bpm to hight even for my sensation. The maximum heart rate also differed, with 172 bpm on the T-Rex 3 and 169 bpm on the Garmin. The heart rate zones were four times higher on the T-Rex 3, especially in the Vo2 max and anaerobic zones, compared to the Garmin. My perceived exertion matches more closely with the Garmin data. There is no possibility to add the metrics not registered during the training, so all the values are totally inaccurate. I think it is necessary to create a new video for swimming with the T-Rex 3. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a swimmer so I'll leave that up to other channels more dedicated to the sport but comments like this are helpful for other users out there!
What is the best smart watch that offers gps offline maps for hiking/biking, keeping budget in mind or budget friendly? If you could add an affiliate links, that would great
I'd probably go for an older Garmin model if you're trying to save money. Something like the Garmin Forerunner 955, or Fenix 6 would get the job done and could be found second hand or refurbished for probably $200-$300?
Why skimp on sapphire? Non exchangable straps alone makes it silly let alone not adding the new improved sensor on the back. When they make those changes then the 300-600$ price point will absolutely be worthwhile providing their app / application of collected data being on point. Otherwise talk about a very easy pass until they do this part 2 😅😊😮. This time next year these will be a garmin chaser perhaps.
I really like the look of this vs my Garmin Instinct 2X but cant find any info about the flashlight on the Ultra. obviously it wont be as great as the dedicated LED on the Instinct. But can you tell me how bright the flashlight is? Is it usable?
You should be able to turn hotspot on your phone, which should show up as a wifi connection.... this should allow you to download maps to the watch while outside of the home. I say "should" - I cannot confirm this. Regardless, I don't think any of us would wait 1-2 hours for it to download to the watch while NOT at home.
Will you also check out the GBD-H2000? I'm very interested in the watch, but the reports about the heart rate sensor and a very bad software make a disappointing impression again. I trust your reviews the most and would appreciate it.
Wondering if your outdoor running includes GPS, and your indoor running doesn't. Might be that GPS is interfering with the heart rate sensor (either in hardware or software).
That's correct though I'm not sure how GPS would interfere with an optical HR sensor. The optical sensor is based on light sending/receiving while GPS is a wireless signal. I suppose anything is possible.
Hi i am a gshock fan. I want to buy a smart watch for running, hunting and work (law enforcement). Would you suggest for first watch Amazfit trx ultra, garmin fenix 7x pro or epic pro gen 2 sapphire?
Thanks for the in-depth professional review as always! I’ve been in the market for a premium sport watch outside Apple and have been keeping an eye on this brand. It sucks they made all these great cosmetic upgrades, but still chose the terrible first generation HR sensor when they just introduced a brand new one in a watch (gtr 4) that cost half the price. Garmin it is.
I think Amazfit ultra definatly beats garmin epix 2 simply because of price. The price of garmin watches is just too expensive. I think most people don't have $1800AUD for a gps watch. really happy that amazfit are competing and doing well vs garmin.
As far as your comment about needing to be at home for wifi. I don't have an amazfit. But I update my coros apex 2 pro using the wifi Hotspot from my phone to update my watch. Not sure if that's possible on amazfit
just a comment about the "cheap plastic" of trex pro. I bought my trex pro in august 2021, after more than 1 year and half it appears like just "out of the box". Plastics didn't decay in appearance and in characteristics, there aren't scratches on the glass and only a little scratch due to a little incident I had last summer. Materials in trex pro are really a false problem.
I personally don’t have an issue with plastics. In fact they tend to survive scratches better than metal since metal scratches leave an unsightly shiny spot. Though, for super rugged applications and for a more “premium” feel I think a lot of people like the metal bezel and back plates.
Great video as always! Seems to be a great watch. Especially for the price!! But I really love the Garmin Connect platform so I will always stick to Garmin.
Thank you, great review. After 1 year, they did any major update via software, such as labels and routable maps? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth buying T-Rex Ultra at this price. Maybe T-rex 2 is already good.
@@domenicoperrelli4016 I had both before moving to a Suunto Vertical Titanium. I found the T-Rex 2 incredible accurate in a 60 kilometer ultra. In fact, despite of not having maps, the T-Rex 2 is a lot lighter and has much better battery life. If you are ok with the very basic navigation, it's a better watch than the T-Rex Ultra.
Question: i had the galaxy watch active, and I've noticed that after some time, the step counter would no longer be accurate. Is the amazefit better than samsung?
That's odd. Yes, my watch was connected to my (very fast gigabit) wifi. I've tried various other hotspots with similar results. Maybe it's just an issue for me.
A 100 days watch be coming soon. it is just the display that eats power and some leds. I mean my vivoactive HR runs 20 days with always on display, reflective and good visibility in sunlight. Amazfit could easily make these outdoor rugged watches the same way. Stunning outdoors.
I started to buy the first generation, and the price of the second generation doubled.. There is no change in the appearance design. In fact, I have been expecting the Amazfit Trex display panel to become a rectangular design. I always think that the appearance design of Japanese watches is beautiful.. There are many functions Not needed..T rex 2 is enough! Less than us dollar 120 about mainland China , wait for a breakthrough change in appearance!
Thank you for the excellent review 👍🏻. I have two questions. What is the function of the metal piece that has the name of the watch on it, and does it mean that water entering it will be a disturbing thing? Another question, do you expect it to be a good thing to upgrade my watch from Pro 1 to Ultra? Would that be a good option, because I really liked the animated backgrounds in the different watch faces, which I expect is an option that is not available in Pro 1, and thank you very much.
As long as Garmin keeps offering the current mapping functionalities, I’ll keep use them. I often go to new places I don’t know and just create a quick route and go for a run. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great thing to have.
All reviews i have seen does not shows how the watch interacts with an iPhone functions like texts and calls. This is what keeps me from buying the watch. Please include these features on you future reviews.
Am still waiting when a manucturer will include basic diving abilities on a smartwatch. There is Apple watch Ultra but its 2 expensive and Suunto 9 Peak Pro that measures only 10meter deep.
As usual an honest, very healthy and objective review, very happy for the good sport watches options with great quality. This will put bigger brands to sweat a little bit.
HR sensor (or software) sucks indeed. I got the standard trex, could be accurate AF or could be all over the place (e.g. when close to HR max, might show some ridiculous value like 80bpm)
You cannot answer phone calls on the T-Rex Ultra as there's no speaker or microphone on board. Messages and Notifications do show up however it's just something I didn't mention because that's essentially the bare minimum for any smartwatch these days!

I will be interested in amazfit once they figure out the HR sensor problem … until then GARMIN has no competition
@@harmansofearley yes
@Matthew Harman at that price they should invest a bit in HR sensors... I don't like wearing chest straps
In short: you get what you pay for
this is my fav watch, i 've waited for it so long time, its must be the best product most ppl wanna used !
That was a great in depth review. helped me a lot in deciding weather to get this watch or not.. and i got it!
Garmin's certainly hold their value.
Looks better on the wrist than in pics
It took me 5 minutes to download a map of my town to the watch.
And, while i did have to download another app, it did give me turn by turn directions (through Google maps on my phone phone, lol).
For loading maps at the trailhead, could you try connecting the watch to your mobile hotspot and then do it? Seems like that'd be a workaround the Wi-Fi issue.
Sure could, but it does take a very long time to download the maps.
Will always like your videos Dave, great knowledge you put into this T Rex, Thanks
I’m deciding on an amazfit ultra vs a falcon for Black Friday. What would anyone recommend at this point in the year?
The falcon has no microphone!!
Does "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" measure and display the current diving depth?
Its just to find your keys in a dark room, or your bag. But not for lighting a trail.
Loving the new studio. Awesome lighting esp product closeup 👍🏻
Glad you like it!
Just got the trex ultra, how do i go a hike and get it too record my trail so i can breadcrumb return if i need too?
Wondering if your outdoor running includes GPS, and your indoor running doesn't. Might be that GPS is interfering with the heart rate sensor (either in hardware or software).
That's correct though I'm not sure how GPS would interfere with an optical HR sensor. The optical sensor is based on light sending/receiving while GPS is a wireless signal. I suppose anything is possible.
I have the trex pro. And one of the things that get on my nerves is not being able to make or receive calls. Can you do that with the ultra?
6:47 would be nice to have some standard for charging ports
It’s a standard for Amazfit. These brands typically don’t use standard USB ports because they need to be heavily waterproofed for underwater pressure.
@@ChaseTheSummit I was rather thinking of standard magnetic port for all of the smartwatches and bands.
who would you pick? this 1 or the garmin instinct x2 solar.
which is better overall.? similar price
Hello. Really enjoy the review Amazfit T-REX Ultra. Just wondering does this smartwatch compatible to Android Google Play store?
100% agree. I don’t why they continue use it.
Hopefully the next phone gets the internal upgrades
I think Amazfit ultra definatly beats garmin epix 2 simply because of price. The price of garmin watches is just too expensive. I think most people don't have $1800AUD for a gps watch. really happy that amazfit are competing and doing well vs garmin.
i am confused between Garmin Instinct 2 and T Rex Ultra. Which one should i go for?
As far as your comment about needing to be at home for wifi. I don't have an amazfit. But I update my coros apex 2 pro using the wifi Hotspot from my phone to update my watch. Not sure if that's possible on amazfit
That would work but as mentioned downloading maps takes an insane amount of time. Not sure how efficient that would be with a hotspot.
just a comment about the "cheap plastic" of trex pro.
It has removable straps now. At least from shopee over here in asia.
Still no routeable maps but that's not surprising to me. Garmin is still the only one doing that.
@@ChaseTheSummit Thank you. So, T-rex 2 is a good choice after all
@@ChaseTheSummit there's a beta 3.5 firmware with better maps (no routeable) and turn-by-turn notifications .
Still rocking a Garmin 245 does everything 💪🏼
minus the maps!
I downloaded a map to mine.....took minutes. Did you connect WiFi in the watch?
I'm interested. The price point is right and it's rugged. Most Garmin and coros in this price point arent as rugged i Believe. I could be wrong
Hello Nice Review Bro
Does it connect with bike Cadence and Speed Sensors?
Thanks
Have they solved the notifications in sms so that you get whole sms with smiley faces & icons instead of squares with question marks?
I started to buy the first generation, and the price of the second generation doubled.. There is no change in the appearance design. In fact, I have been expecting the Amazfit Trex display panel to become a rectangular design. I always think that the appearance design of Japanese watches is beautiful.. There are many functions Not needed..T rex 2 is enough! Less than us dollar 120 about mainland China , wait for a breakthrough change in appearance!
Hi. I'm using terex pro for the last 10 months and happy with that but can't receive calls
Unfortunately the T-Rex series doesn't have a mic/speaker on board for phone calls.
The metal piece is protecting an opening for the Altimeter/Barometer this is by design and does not affect the water resistance rating of the watch.
As long as Garmin keeps offering the current mapping functionalities, I’ll keep use them. I often go to new places I don’t know and just create a quick route and go for a run. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great thing to have.
What Garmin do you have? Thxs
they need to come with a screen protector like tank m1 pro as my amazfit trex pro lasted 2 weeks and screen cracked with normal wear
That would be a nice tough. Though at this price point I was hoping for a sapphire lens.
All reviews i have seen does not shows how the watch interacts with an iPhone functions like texts and calls. This is what keeps me from buying the watch. Please include these features on you future reviews.
Super vidéo, comme toujours 👍 kiss from France 😉
What app in PC can we use for GPS and heart rate compare say Im having three watch brand ?
The creame/silver/gold version is possibly the best looking smartwatch to ever exist! sad the trex uktra isn't available in Australia
how does it compared to the T-Rex2? is it worth the upgrade or save $200 and get the TRex 2?
Curious on the comparison between t rex ultra vs the garmin instinct 2x
Got my attention, they are definitely getting better.
Hello, I have a problem with Amazfit T-Rex Ultra - Turn on the device to ensure its proper operation.
I really want this but I'll stick to my tic watch 3 gps, and wait for them to make one like this. Maybe pick up a T-Rex pro 2
Is it best screen face? Doesn’t look that good, overloaded? Also no solar for those of us who spend a lot of time outdoors
I've yet to see an AMOLED display watch with Solar. It seems that technology isn't there yet even in much more popular brands like Garmin.
@@ChaseTheSummit hm... thats interesting point that I never was thinking about. my garmin instinct have just border around and its enough
HR sensor (or software) sucks indeed. I got the standard trex, could be accurate AF or could be all over the place (e.g. when close to HR max, might show some ridiculous value like 80bpm)
Dang!!! I want that stufff... cool battery life... I used Amazfit Bip S for 30-40 days battery life
Too sad they didn't include the better HR sensor of GTR4 (a US$200,00 smartwatch), a watch released about Aug-Sep 2022.
on the same price there are: Garmin Fenix 7, Garmin Epix (gen 1), Garmin venu 3. beats them? (sincerely)
enjoyed the review however no mention of answering a call or message/notifications. i take it that feature is not available or overlooked by reviewer.
You cannot answer phone calls on the T-Rex Ultra as there's no speaker or microphone on board. Messages and Notifications do show up however it's just something I didn't mention because that's essentially the bare minimum for any smartwatch these days!
May I know Trex ultra it's can detect grid reference or longitude
I would upgrade to this from the T Rex 2 if you are able to answer phone calls. Are you able to answer phone calls with this?
Nope. No speaker or mic on board.
Any idea when it will be available in Canada ?
That car wash feature is awesome honestly
Ha! Pretty neat!
