    Gabbie Hanna recently has been in a whole bunch of youtube drama recently, making videos about youtubers like Joey Graceffa, Jessi Smiles, Angelica Oles and mooooore! I thought that this would be a great time to give her nice audiobooks a good ol' listen, are Adultolescence and dandelion good books? Are they bad? or somewhere in the middle?
    This video is not about Gabbie Hanna as a person, it's just about my personal experience listening to these things that she made :)

    The way that I immediately interpreted “Thank you for the thank you card” is as a statement about how we all live in a culture of validation where words are starting to lose their meaning. I think that the act of thanking somebody for a thank you card is supposed to imply some level of meaningless politeness or something. Honestly I have no idea it really does just sound like a tumblr post.

    Most modern poetry does not use a set rhyme scheme (it’s just not in style), but they at least have some sense of *rhythm* , of making sure the words sound good on the page. Gabbie’s poems just sound like tweets you’re meant to read once, chuckle or not, and never read again.

    as a big fan (and occasional author) of non-rhyming poetry, i would say that what differentiates poetry from just statements (or simple prose) is imagery, metaphorical language, elliptical style, wordplay, interesting formatting, and having a certain rhythm or melody to it. all gabbie seems to use are wordplay and formatting and that’s why her poetry falls so short.

She is incredibly insecure and can't handle criticism, even though she hides behind a false image of confidence and aloofness. Finally, her art sucks and I don't want anything do with it. Is this how the poems actually sound in her head when she writes them? She sounds like a 10-year-old whose teacher made them read the daily poem out loud to the class. That weird cadence that people have when they read poetry, particularly kids, because there's a strange assumption that a poem has to have a rhythm to it. It's a kind of galloping up and down, regardless of the structure or rhyming scheme of the poem.
    The fact that this is how she wants people to hear her poems, that this is what they are meant to sound like to her, makes me actually respect her poetry less. I already had trouble finding any depth to them, any meaning beyond the surface level, but hearing her read them out loud has made me realise that there is no depth for me to find.
    This is a high schooler needing to complete the creative writing section of their English credit before graduation, desperately trying to sound deep and meaningful in an attempt to secure an A on the assignment because they need to raise their average in order to pass the class otherwise they'll have to retake the credit in the autumn term and delay graduation while their friends all go off to university in September, potentially losing their place at their preferred school if their request for a late start in the spring term is denied.

      @@genericname8727 That's fair enough, I can see your point. To me, I think it makes listening to it really difficult because there is no difference in tone or emphasis anywhere. It all just sounds the same, so the sense of it gets lost to the monotony.
      I'm sure that childlike feel could have been conveyed in other ways with a nuanced, artful reading. I've had an Audible subscription for years and I still always cringe when I see that the author has done the narration. There are very few writers who have the ability to make the story come to life as well as the professional narrators/voice actors. I have heard a few excellent exceptions, but for the most part I think that a writer should leave it in the safe hands of a professional.

    The "thank you card" poem reminded me of "The Good Place", where a wine bottle has a note saying "thank you for thanking me for thanking you for thanking me.." etc. You could read it as, if we go too deep into a culture of performative politeness, we're stuck in an endless loop of insincere but mandatory thank yous, and you'll look like a jerk if you break it.

  • @glisa3801
    @glisa3801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I feel like thank you for the thank you card reflects the silliness and performative nature of thank you cards and how they come more from a place of trying to look like a good person than actually being thankful and thus the performance must be continued by thanking someone for the thank you and on and on.

    The chain starts with receiving the 'Thank You' card. You then have the choice of replying with a 'Thank You' in card form also or some other way, like audibly or through text. If you go for the first option, being to reply to the card with a card, the original card sender is then also left with the two choices you were. They can break the chain now by opting with a 'Thank You' that does not involve a card, or cement you both in for a infinite run of thankful card giving and taking.

    “Thank you for the thank you card”
    Firstly, Hanna uses direct address twice in this ‘poem’. The direct address of ‘you’ brings attention to the reader, making us feel noticed by the ‘poet’. We are being thanked for a kind act which we didn’t do, which may evoke a feeling of guilt within us. In my interpretation, I feel as though this poem is intended to initiate a feeling of guilt within the reader; in modern day society, no one tends to send thank you cards anymore, rather preferring to send text messages or phone the person. However, this act takes no thought, and takes no effort. Hanna could be reflecting on the loss of meaningful words and actions in today’s society, and so is making a point of thanking us for a thank you card that we didn’t send, as to show how happy people could be if we took the time to send them a personalised card to reciprocate the effort they took to send us a gift. The use of punctuation, helps to back this point up, as she finishes the ‘poem’ with an exclamation mark. This punctuation mark is typically used to convey emotion such as excitement, joy or anger. Therefore, this could be two ways; in happiness, or in anger. The ‘poet’ could be expressing the excitement she feels when receiving a card from someone she cares for, in order to encourage the reader to send thank you cards and make others feel this happy too. However, it could also be used to show anger that Hanna may feel at not receiving a thank you card, which she may perceive as rude or unthankful. Either way, I believe that the poet used this choice of words and punctuation as a way to leave the emotion behind the poem up to the reader’s interpretation.
    (This pained me to write I apologise that it’s so shit)

    I'd love to see a proper poetry video from you! You could react to modern poets like Eliot, Plath, etc. I'd really like to see that haha

    Every time I try to write a silly poem,
    It turns out really sad.
    The words and the ways I sew them,
    Paint me like I'm mad.
    But despite my shortfalls, and my problems,
    Unlike Gabby Hannah;
    I'm really not that bad.

    I intake so many more books by audio than reading. People sleep on audiobooks and I was that dork borrowing them from the library, yay for Libby and Overdrive.
    Stephen Weber reading IT is hands down my fav. None of the movies did the club burning scene justice but he did.

    Ok i haven't read "thank you for the thank you card" but going based on title alone i think the short story "Thank You" by Amelia Grey might be the exact same message but in short story form and published first. (I'm not accusing anyone of anything because again i haven't read one of the pieces but i will say that the short story is very good and i recommend reading it!)
