Our trek (12-21) starts in one of the many canyons in the area, then leads into the Valle Vidal through its wonderful meadows, and finishes back on Philmont property with a grand finale of summiting Mount Baldy. July 23, 2021 - Today we hiked 8 miles up to Baldy Mountain, Philmont's highest peak standing at 12,441 feet! We woke up at 4am and went up the 14 switchbacks until we got to the top of the ridge. We caught the sunrise just in time as we got above treeline. The views opened up even more as we went along the ridge, we saw Wheeler Peak, Little Costilla Peak, Mount Phillips, and the Tooth of Time. The final push to the top was the steepest but the views at the top were outstanding. After spending about an hour at the top, we went back the way we came. While we were hanging out at the campsite, we got hit with two hailstorms with pretty terrifying lightning.

Congratulations on topping Baldy! Thanks for bringing back great memories for this OLD scout. I was lucky enough to make the climb twice. The first was when I was 14 in 1967 and the last was in 1971 at 18. I was so lucky to see the world laid out at my feet! Seeing your video was wonderful and our reaction wasthe same! It will be a memory you will NEVER forget! You have brought a huge smile to the face of a 70 year old man.

Great job on capturing the moments! I am celebrating 50 year anniversary of my Philmont experience this week! We were not as smart as you guys. We did Baldy on the day of a 21 miler with our full packs. Enjoy all your scouting adventures whuke you can! ATB
Wow 50 years!? Man 21 miles with full packs over Baldy sheesh. This was my last scouting trip as a Boy Scout unfortunately, but I’m glad it ended on a high note

Climbing Baldy never gets old. If you get the chance in the future, consider sunrising the mountain. You might have to get up at 1-2 in the morning, but it's worth it for that amazing view. I climbed it twice, and sunrising it the second time was beautiful (we full packed it though, so it was painful, would not recommend that). Can't wait to climb it a third time this summer!
Edit: That is the death trail/goat trail. I remember seeing some French Henry staffers running up to that trail after we heard that there were hikers at the top right before a rainstorm.
I was getting ready to brag on this group big-time for the absence of profanity…then the hail storm happened and my hopes were dashed. Other than that, I enjoyed your adventure. I realize it is rare indeed to be around young people, and basically almost everyone without hearing profanity, so I was so impressed. The narrator was almost absent of it, and I do appreciate that. Congratulations on your ascent!
