      But when it happens so quick while you’re driving there no way to get out and put something to protect the windshields, the best thing is pull over and hopefully it will stop the hails soon.

    I've got a thick padded windshield cover which keeps frost off the windshield in winter.
    You could pull over and fit it in seconds. Not only could it save your windshield but could save your life by preventing you from being a 'sitting duck' should you find yourself having to escape from a possible tornado.

    Back in April 2011 I experienced the worst hail I've ever seen. In NJ I've only ever seen pea size. Now in SC we got golf ball size hail for about 15 minutes straight.....then dime size for the next 30 or so minutes. It was a winter wonderland outside for the next hour or so. Lol. It smelled strong of pine out there due to every pine tree was obliterated. A twister formed from that storm about 5 minutes after it passed. I got lucky. I love severe weather......but not hail. It's extremely destructive. I'm so lucky it only did minimal damage to my house and truck. And the temperature dropped from 86⁰ to 54⁰ in that short time. Amazing.

    The really huge hailstones are the scariest, but I'm most impressed when there's enough smaller hail to cover the ground like snow. This also produces the low fog, and if there's also substantial rain, the hail is washed into drifts that sometimes can be 4 feet deep.

    In 2018 State Farm reported $28 million in hail damage nationwide. $27 million of that happened on April 7, 2018 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. If the west facing side of a home was exposed, it was damaged. Broken windows, literal holes in siding, roofs damaged all over town. Our siding had to be replaced and we got a new roof. I can't even describe the sound of that storm, it was so scary.

      I got my roof 2 years after the storm. State Farm only wanted to replace half my roof and I fought them. They finally agreed to send their designated roofer, their adjustor and my roofer to inspect the roof and I agreed to go with the majority. This was during the lockdown. The two roofers arrived first and I told them all about my bad week. My 14yo dachshund had to be put down on Tuesday. On Wednesday my step-dad was hospitalized with Covid-19 and expected to die (he didn't!) but my aunt unexpectedly died. Thursday they came and before the adjustor ever arrived I knew I had my majority!

    This is probably criminally stupid, but a dream of mine is to just set an old oil drum, modified with padding within it and with a chilling unit, out in the middle of one of these storms and try to collect as much of the hail as possible for scientific study.
    Before I wished to just go out after the storm and measure the hail but after seeing the second clip of this video I realized that even on dirt these hailstones shatter like ceramic.
    If these hypothetical hail receptacles could be mass-produced for use by storm chasers and the weather bureau, imagine how accurate and precise the warnings could become.

    • @myacidninjatheamazing1025
      @myacidninjatheamazing1025 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      do an egg basket type thing. only problem would be that you arent moving the receptacle downwards at the same speed as what youre trying to keep intact. set a slightly flattened air mattress out and it may keep them intact enough. again, the only issue is keeping them chilled long enough to look at and inspect or anything

    • @StuffandThings_
      @StuffandThings_ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You know what specialized hail collectors is actually not a bad idea, I could see that selling as a niche product for storm chasers! I would put a sort of shock mount at the base in addition to padding. I like the idea of it being a container, to measure the amount of hail per time period (like a rain gauge sort of) but the hail would just shatter upon hitting itself. So I'd do a padded barrel (padded cause otherwise they'll bounce out) for measuring hail mass (and just accept that they'll shatter) and then a second container with more padding, a shock mount, and a lid that automatically closes after one strike to actually get a sample of hail. Only the second one would need to be chilled, first one could just have like a scale and depth measuring lines or something to take measurements on the spot. The whole thing could be mounted on the back of storm chaser cars like a bike rack or just set up as a stationary thing for weather stations.
      Even cooler, with this idea you could save hail samples long term like with ice cores for later study and comparison!

      Typically in the "Great Plains" region of the United States, also known as tornado alley which includes a lot of states. The land is so flat and covers such an expansive area that it's the most lethal area in the world for tornadoes. Massive hail doesn't always mean a tornado, but this hail is pretty common there during Spring. It can also happen in other places in the US of course but that's a bit rare. I'm in the Northwest and we've never seen hail this big as long as I've been alive. Afaik I've never heard anyone older than me talk about hail this big here either.

    Those who think to install the solar panels on the roof must consider the hail damage effect for the installed solar panels. 5 mm dent on US made car top with a free fall of a metallic ball (Olympic athletic shot put for man) shall be the testing method. Otherwise, it will be a joke for the mediocre testing method for current solar panel to sustain the US domestic hail damages.
