The stormtrooper Rey mind tricked was Daniel Craig who was filming Bond atvthe same studio and asked for any part.
I know that you enjoy musicals, I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie Repo: The Genetic Opera with Paul Sorvino, Anthony Michael Head, Alexa Penavega, Sarah Brightman, Bill Mosley, Kevin 'ohGr' Ogilvie and Paris Hilton from 2008. I don't like a lot of musicals but this was the first movie that after I finished watching it for the first time I immediately watched it again, then watched it again the next day to show it to my wife. It is also the only movie that I have ever bought the soundtrack for because the music is just so good.

@@bookcollector538 I didn't really care for 1 & 2 at the time. I had to watch The Clone Wars to finally appreciate the prequels.
And the Disney movies are fine....as their own. I just really think the trilogy as a whole is a complete mess.
But the Star Wars live action shows are pretty damn good. I especially like their new practical light sabers that are their own light source. So FINALLY you get the glow of the sabers on the actor's faces and within the environment on set. Just an extra little detail that makes it more immersive.
I'm 57. Star Wars was the first movie I was allowed to go see without an adult (I was 12). I even played songs from the Star Wars in my middle school band. I'm student of the cinema, a musician, and a huge "epic" story fan. My dear, I love the way to you react, review, and just watch movies.

Barf. This was so big disappointment. Horrible casting, horrible characters. Wrong attitude, sith humor.
Don’t feel any guilt about liking Star Wars. It’s one of the most narratively rich long franchises in the world.
Also, it's okay to not love every aspect of every movie. Being a fan doesn't mean being fanatical about gatekeeping. Like what you like, love what you love, enjoy what you enjoy. I'm looking forward to your reaction to the next episode.
I 100% agree with the terminology of 'intimate' in describing a sword fight. Martial art scenes are very intimiate.
Totally. Sword fights are easily among the most intimate fight scenes. Though let's put an even more specific term on them - they're duels, where two people are communicating and learning from each other at a point of the highest of stakes. Sword and sorcery, medieval tales, samurai films - the sword duel has a unique rhythm that allows so much character depth to unfold.

They made it a crossguard to have a cool new design/to sell toys. There is of course in-universe reasons for it being a crossguard

The cross guard hilt on Kylos saber is actually meant to diffuse a lot of the energy from his cracked kyber crystal (what powers the lightsaber) you can notice his saber beam is unstable because of this, however it also harkens back to ancient sabers (designed to look more like medieval swords) that had this design as well such as in the old republic, personally I really like this design and was super excited when I saw it ignited in the first teaser trailer
It's a dumb saber designed for red sabers. Other sabers maybe the cracked crystal theory makes sense, but red crystals are synthetic. No reason why he should have a cracked one.
@@zimvader25 Actually. some red crystals are created by a dark side user funneling all their hate and anger through a normal Jedi crystal and causing it to bleed so he could easily have a cracked crystal that way.

@@zimvader25 I may be wrong, but I believe it's stated in some of the tie-in material that his saber crystal is Vader's, which is why he has a cracked crystal, it's sentimental and has meaning for him... and I guess you could say it's symbolic of how unstable he is too. Anyway, in the current -- and in some of the previous -- canon, not all red sabers are synthetic crystals because they can produce unreliable and volatile blades... and as stated elsewhere in comments, in the new canon, the red crystal is created by making a Jedi's stolen crystal "bleed" by pouring negative force energy into it... on conversely, Ahsoka's new sabers' blades are white because she "purified" a Sith's saber crystals in much the same way, but in reverse.

I love this movie, I don't care what anyone else says. This movie hits the right beats for the hero's journey, and I'm a fan. I absolutely adore Daisy Ridley as Rey. The entire thing is really well cast.

The sequels have their fair amount of justified criticisms, but I still think that this film is a solid start to the trilogy and still enjoy watching it today. Going forward, I think they have a solid core set of characters with fantastic chemistry. In particular, Kylo remains a standout for me all the way through. They are all gorgeous movies and really well shot and scored imo, but there are little things throughout that I'm not fond of (most of which has been shared by a lot of other fans): Rey being a Mary-Sue, treatment of legacy characters, and the quips and snappy humour (almost Marvel films-esque -- a little is fine, as there's some of it in the other movies too, but it's mosly sarcastic or dry humour in those, not a fan of the constant quick back-and-forth exchanges). I think overall the films have their goods and bads as much as the prequels do, and will be the entrance into the fandom for the new generation of kids, which will lead to new and better stuff, which I'm all for! Excited to see your reactions to more stuff to come!
The whole Rey as Mary Sue thing irked me. Not so much in this one, but it gets bad in the next two.
I saw STAR WARS (only later referred to as A NEW HOPE) in theaters when I was about 9. I've been in this for the whole ride. Books, comic books, action figures, Halloween costumes, you name it. When I saw THE FORCE AWAKENS in the theater, I loved it. My best friend saw it with me and did nothing but complain about it. He thinks it's been all down hill since THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. But some people just have to have something to bitch about. I love all of them.
Shanelle, I'm so happy for you to be able to enjoy more Star Wars!! 🙌🏻 I was a blubbering mess in theaters watching this. It was palpably SO exciting for the entire theater to enjoy new Star Wars together again.
This was mine and my fiancé’s first movie date, so right there it was great. I remember everyone in the theater cheering at almost everything. I love having such an epic shared experience with such a large crowd 😊

I find it so fascinating that TH-cam reactors, removed from.preconceptions, expectations and certain biases, had no issue immediately recognizing the chemistry between Rey and Finn, to the point of seeing them as a potential romantic pairing..But the loudest people on social media during the movie's release dismissed or ignored that possibility, with most of them trying to force a Finnpoe narrative and, a year later, would be all in on a hope for a ridiculous romance between Rey and Kylo.

I never felt like Rey had any romantic feelings for Finn but I did think Finn sort of had feelings for her. That said, the bromance between Finn and Poe was probably the most chemistry in all of the Force Awakens.
Hollywood just doesn’t have the courage to pursue a romantic relationship between a Rey and Finn. Maybe someday, but for now they don’t. As for Poe and Finn, that was never meant to be. They were always only supposed to be friends .

Well how could we know about their feelings when we never get to know anything about their characters.
I never got why so many people hated this one, I loved it, it was complete fan service for me and it fits the style that the previous Starwars movies had. The next two I had problems with, but I still loved them.
I'm sure like with the prequel trilogy, everyone will suddenly love it in a decade or so and they'll once again try to act like they weren't being toxic about it or didn't go overboard with the hate and bullying.
@@TothanCrawk I don't think it's so much that time made people like prequels more, it's more that the people that grew up with the prequels and didn't hate them in the first place now is the core fans engaging with the fandom.
Personally I hated the prequels when they were new, and I have since moderated myself to thinking 2 and 3 are fine.
@@TothanCrawk So it's just popular to hate the new Star Wars? Then how do you explain Rogue One, The Mandalorian, and The Clone Wars' success? It also doesn't explain how TFA was initially popular, but had a shelf life of like 2 years and after that, everyone saw it for what it was.
Trust me, the sequels might stopped getting hated *as much* as they do right now in the future, but they aren't going to have nearly as much retroactive appreciation as the prequels' have.

The weekend this came out, we marathoned movies 1-6 and saw 7 immediately after. Greatest time of my life.
Saw this when it opened. My son came home from college so we could see it together. The audience we saw it with went crazy. Your reaction brought it all back.

It was clearly a remake of Star Wars with just a few changes put in to pretend it wasn't plagiarism. And I was fine with that. I loved that they kept the "70's future" designs for all of the architecture and spacecraft. The characters and acting was great. I had forgotten that you saw the Despecialized editions, and I'm so thankful for your sake.
All the unnecessary crap Lucas put in the original trilogy is just bad. But it explains How bad the prequels were
A lot of people do not like the last 3 movies. There are issues, and I do have complaints, but I love the Star Wars universe. Seeing new stuff is always fun for me.
Honestly, the whole trilogy was a mistake and a disappointment for me. They're three bad movies with good elements and ideas, but not allowed to develop any of them. Wasted potential. But even for all its issues, I still say Episode VII is probably the least problematic, because it plays everything so safe.
These movies made me accept the fact that we need to move away from the sky walkers. We need new stories. Or we’ll just be remaking skywalker stories for eons.
@@GrayWoIf It is kind of beat to death. I feel that is why Mando did so well, it veered away from the family "story" line a lot more.
We all complained about episodes 1 - 3 not "feeling" like Star Wars. So, in response they gave us exactly EXACTLY what we wanted, and they were right. The Force Awakens feels exactly like Star Wars. Not very "interesting" or "new", but we didn't say we wanted interesting or new. We said we wanted it to feel the same way. Mission complete.

There was over 30 years of material and ideas in the expanded universe ( that Disney killed) imagine where they could have taking these movies.

@@dandotvid When I see comments like that, I do a reassessment to try to figure out if I missed something. Because whatever they saw, I didn't. Reading about "chemistry" between Rey and Finn? Where? The acting was ridiculously forced, (other than Ford and Fisher) Finn fluctuated between overly demonstrative to moribund. Watching Rey be an expert at everything immediately, no training, gritting her teeth and practically snarling while she "channeled" the light side of the force? Sad.

You can’t get it: since the beginning of the rumors of Ep. VII nobody knew if Harrison Ford would be there. It was until the first screening of the first teaser at a Star Wars convention when, as its very last scene, they showed the “Chewie, we’re home” line. There’s videos of how the audience went CRAZY. I shed a couple tears myself.

I was pretty happy with it overall. I cried afterwards. So much joy. After multiple viewings I noticed one sort of flaw but it doesn’t take away from the rest of it.
It’s the last Jedi that ruined it and of course the last one.

I mean she just learned what the force was 15 minutes ago and didn’t believe it was real an hour before that, and now she’s using Jedi mind tricks with no training? That’s just ridiculous. But aside from Mary Sue untrained Jedi knight it was not a bad movie in terms of plot and dialogue.
The Millennium Falcon reveal got such big cheers on opening night. I grabbed my wife's arm when they referred to the garbage ship off screen.

I got bumpy geese when I saw Star Wars' opening scroll with the music when I saw it in theatres in 1977. I'm 52, watched Star Wars opening scrolls a couple hundred times now and still get bumpy geese all over my arms. That always gets cheers in theatres too, a Road Warrior worthy Pop.
Not a Mel Gibson big head figure from Mad Max, the Road Warriors were tag team wrestlers, the crowds went absolutely insane when they entered the arena, it's called the Road Warrior Pop. Even Hulk Hogan couldn't get that level of reaction but he came close.
Hi Shanelle. I was hoping you'd enjoy this as much as I did. A few of my friends didn't like it, and one of them thought it was garbage, but I felt that, unlike the prequels, this episode 'felt' like Star Wars again. Still not as good as the original 3, but they really captured the feel and look of the originals, where the prequels lost that magic, and I'll never understand why they went away from the 'look' that made Star Wars Star Wars. I can't wait to see what you think of the next 2.

I love seeing how you react to these movies gradually becoming more and more a Star wars fan and yes you should definitely watch solo and the Kenobi series

not sure what show you watched. Kenobi addresses Kenobi's personal emotions - something we almost never get in the films. The guilt and defeated lull he's in. Then seeing him open up, get reminded what he's hoping for, forgive himself for Anakin's fall. It's great to see.
Kenobi also better shows PT anakin as Vader making them feel like the same character more than before.
Kenobi helps us understand why Leia named her son Ben.
It addressed the "isn't Leia important too?" thing since in the PT it _seemed_ like Kenobi and yoda only valued Luke's destiny.
It makes the "Vader killed your father" line an emotional moment and not just a white lie from old Ben.
It addressed how vile and evil Vader was in killing the younglings, causing Reva a life of misery and trauma and pain and seeing her almost go fully to the dark side.
Sorry you didn't like it. Maybe it'll grow on you

- I don't really care too much about having that connection between PT Anakin and Vader, since it's been like 30something years, and I can assume he's changed over that time.
- Didn't really need that reasoning, since he was only called Ben as a call back to the original film, for people to "yay" over.
- How exactly did it address that...? By saying she's strong in the force to?
- How is that line any more emotional that it already was? Just because Vader said it?
- So, it showed that Vader was evil. Yeah, we kinda got that, already.
It didn't really add anything of substance. It just solidified stuff we already knew, and retroactively added in things to explain away things that were written sloppily before.
I'd also say that it hurts the fight between Vader and Obi-Wan on the death star. It's no longer a culmination to their fight, cause they already fought again 2 times. The emotional weight of that moment is diminished. Like, imagine if in Princess Bride, Inigo fought the 6 fingered man a couple times between his childhood and the end of the film?
This is why I hate comments you share your honest opinion on the internet and you start some serious s*** God damn it can we all just enjoy the f****** film

I love this movie - it gives me chills. I've stood up for it many times against other SW fans. The story hits all the right notes, soundtrack is amazing, new tech was invented for the props, etc. As a veteran, I love Finn and how he's scared and just wants to do the right thing. Rey (again, music, her theme is perfect) is a great evolution for the hero with a thousand faces. I could go on and on. This movie reminded me of what it was like to be a kid
Guys and gals, if you love the sequels,or hate the sequels, just let Shan enjoy the ride and form her own opinion.

In 1977 my parents hired a babysitter to look after my sister (5) and me (7) and took off on a date on dad's bike.
They were riding around San Francisco more or less at random looking for something to do when they saw a movie theater with a long line coming out. They saw people coming out of the theater and getting back in line to watch it again.
They had never heard of the movie on the marquee, but they decided if people were getting right back in line to watch it again that it might be the thing to do they were looking for.
After watching the movie, with the added benefit of second hand cannabin smoke, they did not get back in line. Instead, they rode home, checked the local theater and saw it too was showing the same movie (with a line) then went home, paid off the babysitter and took my sister and me to see Star Wars for the first time.
To say that is a very good, very clear memory for me would be an understatement.
Great reactions to The Force Awakens, Shanelle!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I did see this in the theater and enjoyed the nostalgia of the original films. I thought the new actors were all great, too.

You've touched on it SEVERAL times and I just have to say it. JJ Abrams did a really good job capturing the feel of the OT. Of course it's essentially A New Hope but he set the table for what could've been an excellent trilogy.
eh, no Star Wars trilogy is perfect. The OT is great but ep6 retreads a lot and the final battle with ewoks is a bit underwhelming. PT is at times corny, cringe, or boring while ep3 is much better. ST has the stellar tone and adventurous feel in 7 and 9 both of which I loved and ep8 was divisive and at times boring. I love all Star Wars to different degrees. :)
I disagree. I think JJ overused his mystery box shtick and left far too much open. Then again I fault Disney generally for not staking a rough outline

And I think you mean to blame Kathleen Kennedy. I agree, she should've had a direction in mind with the trilogy. In theory she should have an office right next to Kevin Fiege who has done a mind-blowing job putting together a 20+ movie story. And Kathleen couldn't take notes on how to handle a trilogy?
@@RedCaio I wasn't asking for perfect. Hell, I would've settled for a good one. The ST is just a hot mess and seemed like the directors hated each other.
Seriously, this trilogy is just a tug of war of ideas which caused the trilogy to go nowhere. Just take Kylo's helmet and Rey's heritage. JJ was pushing things in one direction, Ruin Johnson said "forget all this nonsense", and then JJ came back to try and put things right again....but by then it was too late. The trilogy was lost.
For me, it goes..the OT > the ST > the PT. I love and adore the OT, I love the ST, and I tolerate the PT.
The inside of that Star Destroyer Rei was digging out parts, was unbelievably HUGE wearing the 3D glasses! DANG!!!
I enjoyed this movie, however I do have a few big issues with it.
1. I wish it wasn't almost a carbon copy of Ep IV.
2. They didn't give the fans the one big thing I wanted, which was seeing Luke, Leia, and Han all together flying through the galaxy trying to figure out how to defeat the empire/first order. We saw them all, but it felt incomplete without them being all together.
I'll be very interested to see what your take is on Ep VIII, Shanelle.
JJ forcing a shot of Luke at the end just so he can have all 3 leads return and take away the chance of a time skip really upset me.
Harrison Ford said in an interview, he felt there should have been at least one scene of the three of them together as well.
Hey Shanelle, you are a filmmaker and actor. One film that I think you would love that no one else on TH-cam seems to have reacted to is THE KINGS SPEECH. That is an acting masterclass.
I still really enjoy watching The Force Awakens. It looks terrific, the jokes still make me laugh and the movie makes me feel the same ways I do when I re-watch the de-specialised version of A New Hope.
I acknowledge that The Force Awakens is beat for beat the same as A New Hope, but that doesn't upset me at all when I'm invested in watching the movie.
Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac have worked together before. Check out the cerebral sci-fi thriller, Ex Machina. In addition to being incredibly well-written and well-acted, it won the Academy Award for Visual Effects, beating out--you guessed it--The Force Awakens!
I like this and the next 2 as well. You really should watch the Mandalorian. Solo was trashed by people. I liked it.
Yeah, there's two constants in Star Wars technology: digital storage media will never further miniaturize, and elevated walkways will never have railing.
Of course, I'm an OG Star Wars fan. I have liked all of the movies, this one included. I saw them all in the theater. I didn't cry, but I did get the goosebumps. Your enthusiasm was delightful. Thank you for the watch!

A bit of (non spoiler) trivia that you missed: the stormtrooper that released Rey was actually Daniel Craig. They were filming a Bond movie at Pinewood at the same time as TFA. (If you play it back you will recognise his voice.)
Watching this movie in the theater gave me the same feelings I had at 17 when I saw the original in 1977. I fell in love all over again. If you haven't watched Rogue One yet I recommend it very highly.
The hype for this movie was significant, and I saw the originals as a kid.
I had lots of tears in my eyes, this movie always gives a fresh feeling of fun and adventure. my favorite of the sequel trilogy

I'm so glad you loved The Force Awakens. It's one of my fav Star Wars movies. The tone of embarking on a new adventure is infectious, the dialogue is so good. I love Abrams doing Star Wars.
I've never been the biggest follower of Star Wars movies, I like them and enjoyed them but episode 7 to 9 have my heart. Maybe that is how everyone felt about the first 3 movies when they came out in the 70s. so so good

Stormtroopers are anonymous with no individuality, you're not supposed to care about them when they die. So when FN-2187 (Finn) gets marked with the hand print I knew he was going to be a major character and not some anonymous stormtrooper.

So... when the trailer for this dropped... having felt burned by the prequels... I was kinda "meh." That is until at the end they showed the "Chewy... we're home" scene... at which I instantly broke down and cried and began to make plans for opening night which was still many months away.
As soon as the camera comes into Maz Kanada’s place, and turns right, for about 5 frames of time we can see a copy of ET being barbecued over an open fire.
This is a send-up (a very dark one) to Stephen Spielberg who (as you mentioned yourself) Inspired a lot of the cinematography of this film.
While my affection for this movie has suffered greatly as a result of the trilogy as a whole this movie was pretty well done.. sadly Its all down here from here at least in regards to this trilogy.
I will never get the negativity of this movie. It was fantastic. However, the best of the "new" Star Wars movies was absolutely Rogue One. Hands down.
Solo was the best of the Disney Era movies.
39:16 - It's not just the same beats. All the others had the same beats. They pretty much repeated the story. There were a few divergences but for the most part, it was A New Hope all over again. That was my biggest gripe with this movie. I do like the characters, the dialog, and the humor tho.
Must have been your biggest gripe with the prequels as well then. She talks about the similarities in her reactions to those as well.
If the force awakens had been different from the other movies, people would have been annoyed about it, now that it's similar, people are also annoyed. There was no way to win this.

I went back to rewatch what I thought was another great reaction of yours to the Green Mile when I realized that you have not reacted to that one. Have you watched it already??? The first one is fine as a stand alone movie. The sequels get worse and worse, and drag down this one with them
I loved how the battle plan meeting lampshaded that, yep, it's ANOTHER Death Star.
And it's just a given that they're gonna have blow it up, and have to disable the shields to do it. So they just skip right to that.

This whole trilogy uses nostalgia to manipulate viewers into thinking the writing is good imo. Still excited to see fresh takes on it though, never know if someone may change my mind about it
Rey does say “I’ve flown some ships but never left the planet”. That plus being a super high powered force user = great at flying.
@@dnish6673 that sort of brings up several more issues with the force being used as a scapegoat to work around lazy/bad writing though, which happens increasingly as the films progress. I won't say any more than that due to spoilers, but they didn't even have her character path mapped out beyond this film initially so the "powerful force user" doesn't really do it for me personally. Just comes across as not very well thought out, which we've since learned is the case

One of my favorite Star Wars movies, saw it 7 times in theaters, I even really enjoyed it in 3D. The characters dynamics are so good.
It really bothered me that leia just walked past Chewie considering how close he was to Han and Leia herself. She barely knew Rey.
You actually very much pick up on what a lot of Star Wars fans have issue with with this film. It’s basically a glorified remake of Episode IV. There’s so many elements that are basically redone, and I think a lot of the fans had wished for something new and not a re-creation of the prior film.
As you will also see with the other films in this trilogy (no spoilers) is another issue that they faced being that they did not have a story line built for all three films together. So, with each new film, things got jumbled, and weren’t cohesive.
Before one scene was shot on this film, there should’ve been a very detailed outline of the entire trilogy, and where they wanted to go with it. They didn’t. So this trilogy very much does feel fractured.
I saw Star Wars as a 12 year old boy when it came to the theatres in Germany and The Force Awakens 37 years later. When Han said "Chewie, we are home" I started crying.
I'm really looking forward to your reaction to the next two. A new director came in for Episode 8 and had a very different vision. Much of Ep 8 was resetting Ep7. Then Abrams came back for Ep 9, where he reset everything in 8 to get it back to what he had in mind in starting in Ep 7.

Hi Shanelle...gesundheit... I enjoyed The Force Awakens when it first came out, but it definitely struck me as being a lot like a beat for beat reboot for A New Hope, but with Rey in place of Luke...at least to some extent. However, as time has gone by, I have actually grown to resent this movie more and more for failing to do the one thing that it needed to do...get Luke, Han and Leia back together on screen at the same time. They can subvert expectations all they want in other ways, but they needed to get Hamill, Ford, and Fisher in a scene together in this movie...somehow...it needed to happen, and Jar Jar Abrams failed. I don't care if it was a cheesy flashback, there needed to be a reunion between those characters...even if it was just for exposition purposes. It was moronic of Jar Jar to not figure out a way for it to happen.
You want Han to die?! Fine...have Luke get taken over by the spirit of Palpatine and kill Han right in front of Leia's eyes...but get those three characters back together. I fully resent and hold Jar Jar responsible for screwing that up. ✌💯
I absolutely LOVED this one! People bitch about the sequels but this movie is literally one my favorite in the series! A lot of people complain about the callbacks but I find it endearing. I am a sucker for nostalgia.
Honestly this is the only one of the sequel trilogy of SW that I enjoyed. It's a fun watch as long as you don't think about it too critically 😊

@Shanelle To answer your question at 17:15-17:19, any moment in the film that harkened back to the Original Trilogy; whether it was a returning character, a music cue from the John Williams score, or seeing familiar spaceships (The Falcon, The X-Wings), I had a weird sense of nostalgia that literally took me back to that summer of 1977.
Kinda like new hope? It's exactly new hope with a crappy script
This movie ends with the Director breaking the fourth wall... a frozen couple, Raye & Luke, posing for the cameras, and letting the chopper circle them, meanwhile Luke says "I feel like I should say something" Director shouts "cut" just shut up, and pose. Sloppy ending. I loved Raye, she does convey real force power.
