Canadian manufacturer charging spec for the Ioniq 5 is for 350kW charging capability. I’m hoping that’s the case, just ordered one :) Like the channel bud, good stuff. And we actually have a 350kW network across Canada (some areas 250, but not complaining).

We've had the IONIQ 5 here in New Zealand for about 4 months and have driven about 7,000 km. I still love it; the software can do odd things occassionally, but the updates have fixed most problems. Hard to say when you see it standing alone it does look like a smaller car. When I see it next to the Mach e in next to the Tesla model three I’m surprised again at how large the ionic five is. The shape of it reminds me of an 80s hatchback and I guess that’s why I think compact car when I see it but it’s actually a pretty decent size.

I know you camera man referred to how the MachE feels like to sit on top of the car, versus more in the car like an actual mustang. The funny thing is, I feel like all real v8 powered mustangs always felt like you were sitting on top of the car. I came to that conculsion after driving a 6th gen camaro where you were literally in the car. The mustangs now feel like a sporty coupe version of a ford fusion.

Some things not mentioned: Ford navigation helps route you to chargers. Ford has wireless CarPlay/AndroidAuto which is awesome once you have it. Ford has a rear wiper. Ford has charging in front which is subjective as to personal preference. I feel it’s more natural to pull in to charge as opposed to backing in. Ford has the digital keypad which is another great feature if using phone as a key because you could still get in the vehicle and drive if you don’t or can’t use your phone. You also can valet park with the Ford without carrying the key.
Hyundai has a more polished experience in some ways as I’ve owned ICE and hybrid Hyundais as well as a Ford Fusion Plug-in and a Chevy Volt. I wish the Ford had ventilated seats and a thigh extender so it may come down to seat comfort for me but I really want the Mach E because it just feels/looks more substantial.

Narrower tires on Mach E degrades starting on ice and curve handling. I’ve already seen your video on Ionic 5 charging and it did not meet the 18 minute, 10 to 80% in colder weather. I’ll have to watch the Mach E charging video. Hopefully, done in similar weather conditions. I don’t consider these a SUV. More of a crossover style. I would refer to these as Mini-SUV category. The prices are way to high to get from point A to point B as compared to ICE offerings at this time. Maybe free charging for 3 years will attract some people who travel a lot. Thanks for video.

My local dealer called me to say that they had a Ionic 5 in and I came and looked at it and it was the lowest trim level. I was tempted to buy it but then they said it was going to cost me an extra $5,000 dealer profit. So they wanted to give me to pay an extra $5,000 for the lowest model instead of waiting to get a better car with that $5,000 and when that higher trim model came in they would still charge me an extra $5,000! So I literally went across the street to the Ford dealer and put in my order for a Ford Mach E which I think is going to be a much better looking car and actually a better car! For Toyota's hybrids many dealers will charge an extra two to $5,000 for what they call an appearance package that amounts to a wax job!

Honestly the road trip charging is the number one factor. All the EVs can charge at home over night just fine so I don't even consider that and I live in Canada where everything is far. Half of my family live about 300 km away and some even as far as 450 km away and one guy lives 600 km away. Also I like road tripping and seeing the country so if I'm out of luck on charging I'm not interested.

I absolutely agree that the route planning and battery management software HAS to be rock solid. From watching road-tripping reviewers both in the U.S. and Europe, it appears many cars' software isn't. On his road trips Kyle will usually comment on any problems he encounters with route planning and range estimating/reporting programs and that's helpful, but I don't know anyone who actually evaluates this functionality in any consistent, apples-to-apples method across manufacturers. I don't know how you would do that except by driving a specific long road trip with every car you test. Not practical to do that, so the ad hoc, subjective comments by reviewers are what we have.

Kyle, you praise high charge rates, honestly only something that can be judged in years to come, there is no new battery tech at this time, so manufacturers are using what is available in the market (Tesla is an exception to a point) therefore we can only presume the higher charging cars are doing it a loss for longevity of the battery.
Batteries are to be charged at a fixed voltage and a variable current, normally determined by the manufacturer.

The front Mach-E is much longer than the Ioniq 5, so the ioniq could have a bigger frunk, but instead they taken all they have shrunk the front engine cavity space. I drove 10k miles in my XC40 including some road trips and really like it. The performance is amazing. However the range sucks but I like hanging out at EA charging stations. @@midnight121190 here are my reasons: If you care about the range, my Ioniq 5 RWD gives me 488K every time I charge it to 100% but when I charge it to 90% I get a minimum of 430 to 450KM. I paid for it 55K after rebates included taxes in Canada and I can charge it in between 18 to 28 minutes from 10% to 80%. If you want to pay around 89K + taxes then you can get Tesla Y and it gave you the same or maybe less KM range. However, Tesla's software is unmatched in the market other than that Inoiq 5 wins it for me. 40K price difference is a lot for a lot of us. I am sure others may disagree but this is my personal opinion and experience.

@@ferooz303 thanks for replying! I definitely see the range, charge speed and apparently the ride comfort (what do you think btw?? Comfy as claimed?) as all being a huge plus to the ionic. I’m honestly surprised and excited by how many people say the Hyundai has the best ev ride quality. I have a Tucson now and it’s loud and not overly comfy - though it wasn’t at the same level the ionic is lol. The ride quality on the m3 I test drove was one of the things that stood out.
My main issues are the storage size and charge network. When we camp or road trip… we don’t pack light and the Tesla has what seems like a TON more room. Two people can literally sleep in the Tesla comfortably with the climate control running only losing minimal power overnight. It’s tempting. So it’s more expensive (about $15-25k here too) but it also seems like a way bigger car with a better charging infrastructure). Going from Washington to Colorado with a Tesla, no problem. Same trip no Tesla… looks challenging or slow at best right now.
The ionic’s 2 years of free charging is tempting though. There are literally great points to both.

Electrify America is everywhere nowadays and the charging was very convenient. During my trip, my buddy had to charge twice for our 500KM trip while I only charged for 8 minutes once. I agree Tesla has a great charging network however, there are a lot of charging stations for none Tesla cars, especially in the USA. By the way, IONIQ 5 is one of the rare cars that has an adapter that can power your camping gears and even power your house for a few days. I’m late to the party here, but I find the Mach-E to be a superior vehicle. I thought the ride quality is better, it’s more spacious, 2 car seats fit in the back and a 3rd adult fits comfortably, the Ioniq 5 doesn’t accomplish that. The Mach-E also gets above EPA at around 328 miles per charge. I find the Mach-E to be the better Road Trip car as it offers way more storage and space, which are both more important in my humble opinion then the 30 min EA charging session, also I don’t think EA has 350Kwh stations everywhere, I know they are installing them, but are they everywhere yet? Because if they are still the old 150kwh stations like EVgo and ChargePoint then the faster charging of the Ioniq 5 is not utilized rendering it useless. To each their own, I honestly prefer the Mach-E because Interior space (width) was the most important to fit the 2 car seats and an adult comfortable, storage space was second, range 3rd, and looks 4th, which I think Mach-E bests the Ioniq in.
