Thinking about getting a USB C extension and run it from the original dock to the switch. Nice thing about that is that I can hide the dock and only run one cable off my desk. Doesn't make it more portable tho.
I've seen a bunch of people do that recently. No it won't help with portability but I'm sure it would help you get more use out of the dock & also help protect the screen - not bad for a couple of bucks
Im running it with original dock and 0,5m USB C extension (female - male) and the HORI stand and put the dock out of sight! Works fine 👍🏻 I duct taped the „weightplate“ in the dock so the port comes up without the weight of the switch.
My reason is that I have a hybrid cover case on my switch other than being annoying taking it off... I don't want to wear out the velcro and that's my main concern

@Gerard20j nope. The Switch Lite is missing the video interpreter chip on the inside (one of the more expensive components) so there's no video being output / that you can capture. The Lite is pretty much deadlocked as handheld mode only.

@@JohnnyProctor9 Hey thank you for replying man, seriously. One last question though, have you been keeping up with the firmware updates for the switch console? I’ve read that certain controllers don’t work anymore after certain updates. I assume your controller adapter is not an official nintendo product right?
What about using gamecube controllers with this setup. The adapter you had only had 1 USB port and requires 2 for the gamecube adapter to be used on the original dock. So what would be the solution for that?
The official dock's price of $80 is absurd! But maybe not that absurd when you put the price of all these items together: USB hub: $30 Hori Dock: $10 AC Adapter: $30 HDMI Cable: $10 Total: $80 So in total it makes sense it would be priced as such given all they are putting together in one device with the extra AC and cable. We also gotta remember this USB hub only has one USB 3 port to the extra two USB 2 ports the official dock has, which means if you want to use multiple USB controllers, or a USB controller with an ethernet adapter at the same time, or even the 4 player GNC controller adapter for Smash you are shit outta luck. On the plus side like the video showed third party docks are usually smaller than the official dock making them more portable and you don't run the risk of scratching your Switch because the screen will be fully exposed (which might be a downside to some). Now, if you already have *any* of these components (likely in the case of the HDMI cable and AC adapter) the price will of course go down in comparison. I added the price of an HDMI cable because the official dock does come with a 5ft one. This makeshift dock is more accessible than opening the cover on the official dock so if you don't have a spare HDMI cable you can always just switch back and forth another cable already in use by another device you have on your TV. Additionally you can also chose to just use one AC adapter and move it along with the Switch saving you even more money for the price of just having to unplug it every time you want to move rooms or switch TVs. Anyways, great video! This is definitely a better, cheaper alternative. Just wanted to compare prices since I saw a lot of people in the comments cursing at the official dock and my curiosity led me to find out the pricing of it was actually not as crazy as I initially thought.
Tbh the only really necessary part of this setup IS the adapter for 30$ - and that's pretty much all that I bring with me to play at other people's houses and it works like a charm. The only other somewhat necessary piece is the AC adapter (if you don't want to use original) and if somehow you don't have an extra HDMI cable. If you want to build the entire setup I mentioned it will cost close to the same as the actual dock set - as you illustrated - but most people just need the adapter. Everything else I listed in the video was really just so people know it's out there and available if they need / want it.
@@RobNoireGaming Yes but then my thought process for adding the AC adapter price was if you plan on having a second dock to play on two TVs then opening the back and unplugging and bringing the AC adapter becomes redundant, at that point may as well just take the extra second to unplug the hdmi and bring the dock. Save yourself $80! 😆 Though I'll edit the post to mention it. All in all this setup is just much more versatile.
Thanks! Question: My son has a switch that he takes with him out of town. We go to my grandmother's often, & the game tv she allows for gaming is an old non-hdmi tv. She occasionally allows gaming on her plasma hdmi TV, but not very often, naturally. The kids(young & old..lol) must go to the room where the old tv is to get their game on. My question is, is there an adapter that would allow my son to play his switch on the old tv without alot of issues? I don't imagine the graphics to be wonderful, but good enough with alot or no lag. And could that adapter also work for his PS3? I brought him a used PS3 in which the HDMI port works, but not the AV port. Go figure. If so, which adapters do u recommend? Thanks in advance...
They do absolutely exist, and you can buy them at places like Bestbuy or even Walmart. The graphical quality will definitely suffer a downgrade, but there's no escaping that - the TV might also centre the entire 16:9 picture, or cut off the sides, so I can't promise the greatest results. I'll put an amazon link below to one that I have personally used that worked without much of an issue. Note that it does require USB power, but if you're using the Nintendo Switch or PS3, just plug it into one of those USB ports on the console/dock and it's good to go. Going from AV to HDMI is common and there are tons of options, but HDMI to AV is rarely done and not something I've ever really messed around with besides just for fun, so a local electronics store might be able to recommend a better product. @Johnny Diaz You mean you bought 3 docks total (1 for each room), and quite frankly what the OP is suggesting would've cost you slightly MORE... had you used his particular setup x 3 as well!
Unfortunately I don’t know offhand, no. I’m still using the same adapter from when I made this video several years ago. Any adapter that specifically lists the Switch as a supported device will work - if it doesn’t list the Switch, it probably won’t work.
I wish I could use my 3rd party charger on my dock, I can't find how but it's been charging my switch for probably over a year and still it's perfectly fine but I can't even use my switch on my tv because I lost my actual power adapter.
I have one of those small docks but it only seems to work with my original Nintendo power adapter. I tried buying a cheap one "designed for Nintendo Switch" and it DOESN'T work. So if anyone knows any cheaper adapters that DO work let me know, until I find one I'll just use the original one but I hate having to keep plugging it in and out of my home setup

How?! How is the cost of the Type C HDMI adapter which the OP himself said will cost you anywhere from $25 to $40, and he recommends getting the good (i.e. more expensive) one, PLUS the cost of the stand (another $15 to $20) less than the official Nintendo dock, which you yourself pointed out can be gotten for around $30 or so on ebay/Amazon? No, it won’t work. The switch lite lacks a video interpreter chip inside meaning video out is not possible. One of the things they removed to cut down the price.

I bought steering wheel accessories only to discover the old crap like burnout, need for speed and hot wheels don’t use motion steering. Sorry I’m ranting . I’m getting annoyed at the lazy ports and uninspiring releases for switch. How long do joycon batteries last? They look real small inside those already too small joycon s . 60 bucks per joycon over here is bloody expensive . And you need two for decent gaming. Grrr
I'm traveling and wanted to try and play party games with my family over the holiday. I am trying this method and have the adapter but the TV is blank. Is there a TV MODE setting I'm missing in the settings menu?
Nice, I bought a type C wireless adapter that will cast(chrome cast?) game play directly into my smart tv. I have a switch lite but it still works. Video quality is less on a big screen with the light but not too bad. The only down side is you cannot charge n cast at the same time. . they might make an adapter that does both but mine doesn't.
If you connect a power adapter (either the one that came with the original dock or buy another) to the adapter, it will charge it at the same time. No power source and it's Tv only
This could be better than the RG350 I got 2 weeks ago until the HDMI issue is resolved. Could I run 4 wired X-box 360 controllers through a 4 port hum on your adapter?! =D
Too bad that won't work for the Switch Lite. It lacks a piece of hardware known as a video interpreter chip, which is present in the older, larger Switch, but is absent from the Switch Lite. However, theoretically, if you take apart both a Switch Lite and a regular Switch, and insert the video interpreter chip from the regular Switch, into the Switch Lite, and solder it down to precisely the right spot it needs to be, for the Switch Lite to be able to dock to a TV, and then you put everything back together, and take apart the official Nintendo dock, and put it into a smaller shell, and then plug the Switch Lite into the smaller dock, then after all that effort, the Switch Lite might finally be able to connect to a TV. Unless Nintendo thought of everything, and somehow knew in advance that some people would try to do just that, and blocked it from happening, by adding some Switch-Lite specific coding to the firmware, to block the video interpreter chip from being compatible with the Switch Lite, so that only a regular, larger model of Nintendo Switch can detect the video interpreter chip. Then, that would suck, because then you would have both a Switch Lite and a regular Switch that both won't connect to a TV, and can both only be played in handheld mode. However, if Nintendo hadn't thought that far ahead about blocking the video interpreter chip when it's inserted into the Switch Lite, then it would probably be possible to pull the switcheroo by making the Switch Lite dockable to a TV, at the expense of making the regular, larger Switch be playable in handheld mode only.
Nah , any more ventilation restrictions on dock and it will explode. When I dock switch I look down the slot and make sure the back gets scratched only, switch really likes it back scratched gently
Help, I've used a type 3 HDMI but it wasn't official, and it doesn't work, I've wasted lots of money on it. It charges the Nintendo switch, but doesn't connect it to the TV, HELP!!!!!
Say for example I’m on 80% charged and have it on the tv, is there anyway to avoid charging for a bit? Feels like I’m constantly charging it, without letting it use a bit of the battery first! I’m afraid I’ll end up putting to much pressure constantly charging
I am no professional, but i think you don't really need to worry about this, because the switch was designed to be used like this. I think it's even less worrisome than using the battery and charging it while it isn't fully empty yet over and over. Don't quote me, i just heard it from other people and it seems to make sense to me.
It won't work unfortunately - the Nintendo Switch lite does not have whats called a "video interpreter chip" which is what displays the image on your TV when connected to a dock. The port on the switch Lite will only charge it.

I mean people have tried that concept. The latest iteration is called Google Stadia & it's not very good. Maybe someday we'll get there.
Ok we can steram phone to nintendo but now we need stream nintedo to phone
Dose it work
P Diddy The switch doesn’t have Bluetooth
Lag. Lag Is the reason.
I bought one of those hdmi adapters a while back for my phone glad you told me that it works for the switch too.
Its hard for me to put the hdmi cable in the TV.
@ Kindagamer MY TV IS LIEK GLUED TO WALL IT WONT BUDGE OK😿
Thank you so much!! I lost my dock and I can’t wait to use it.
I’m getting a switch for me and my daughter and was trying to figure out how to play it on the tv. Thanks I’m going to try this ❤
Another reason “ you lost your dock and you can’t find it “
Thats my reason

Thinking about getting a USB C extension and run it from the original dock to the switch. Nice thing about that is that I can hide the dock and only run one cable off my desk.
Doesn't make it more portable tho.
I've seen a bunch of people do that recently. No it won't help with portability but I'm sure it would help you get more use out of the dock & also help protect the screen - not bad for a couple of bucks
Im running it with original dock and 0,5m USB C extension (female - male) and the HORI stand and put the dock out of sight! Works fine 👍🏻
I duct taped the „weightplate“ in the dock so the port comes up without the weight of the switch.
I think Nintendo has a big issue with docking problems and dont want to recall console to fix..this will help me alot thank you.
are you able to play your switch on a tv without the ac adaptor that was supplied with the console ??? plz help
My reason is that I have a hybrid cover case on my switch other than being annoying taking it off...
I don't want to wear out the velcro and that's my main concern
I've got one more reason to play dockless for you. 😸 💖 I've got 20/400 vision in my right eye and light and hand motion in my left; my mom and I enjoy playing Disney Dreamlight Valley together. She helps me find stuff that would normally be a pain in the butt, but playing on a bigger screen almost even more of a strain on the eyes. 😿 I think this'll keep us going for a lot longer! 😈 Thank you very much!! 😸 💖
Thanks for your help. I REALLY don’t want anything on the screen when I pick up a switch.
My bad for a totally outdated comment, thanks for the very informative video. I'm also trying to hook up my switch to my work monitor at home, so that my son can switch rooms when we want to watch TV. But I had a question about whether this setup would work if my computer monitor doesn't have speakers? Where would the sound come from? I guess I could also set up a bluetooth speaker next to the monitor? Thanks again for your expertise! 😄
Sweet! I was hoping for an easy way to play at a friend's house with disconnecting mine dock all the time
So there’s no way to do this completely wirelessly? Unfortunately my tv is mounted and the electrician didn’t make the hdmi accessible like I’ve requested 😭
Thaaaaaanksssss!!! A new sub here!!! You have too much quality of content!
Thanks so much! Really glad you enjoy my videos!
was your 1000th sub no problem
Couldn’t we do this as well with the Nintendo switch lite?
Aww man ... The link to the adapter doesn't exist anymore as a page. Gave me error with the dog saying, "Sorry!" ir something like that. I guess I'll have to hunt for it elsewhere ir something.
You deserve more that 300 subs my dude
This is a great 30-second video
I wonder if this will work on the switch mini?!
Do you mean the Switch Lite? I think it won't connect with the TV at all :/
@@emmanuelnuno Idk.. i wouldnt see why it wouldnt be able to do what this is doing unless nintendo is shady and changes the port or something. Idk if theyll work but I know for a fact people are working on all these accessories as we speak.
I personally want to get a lite with a battery pack case, 3rdparty pro controller and typec/hdmi adapter unless a significantly better pro version oomes out.
@@matttorres5510 When the Switch Lite comes out I'm considering buying one to test out whether or not it will work (if I can get my hands on one). It isn't 100% confirmed, but the general consensus is that yes, they have changed the internals including how the port on the bottom is connected to them, so there's at best a 50/50 chance on whether or not it would work.
@Gerard20j nope. The Switch Lite is missing the video interpreter chip on the inside (one of the more expensive components) so there's no video being output / that you can capture. The Lite is pretty much deadlocked as handheld mode only.
My switch won't work on my tv because I think my dock is damaged, so I for sure will try this now that I know about it! Thank you so much for the help!
Did you try it? If so, how has it performed?
@@rickyp.7273 I actually ended up figuring out what was wrong with my dock so I ended up not needing to!
Do you need the power input also, or is it enough to have a simple HDMI to USB-C cable, like the ones to connect your iPhone/iPad to a big screen?
I have the same question
I think it needs to have a power cable too.
My dock sadly broke so i definitely needed this video
What if I don't want to plug the damn annoying brick into the wall every time, couldn't I just get a switch-compatible USB-C cable and power it from my TV?
Also interested in this, or just a usb cable connected to an adapter of identical power amperage
@@BuenoMcgurski - Well I ended up getting the Genki Covert Dock and it works great, even has a USB port for hooking up wired controllers.
@@JohnnyProctor9 Oh snap nice! How is it’s compatibility with non-Nintendo controllers?
@@BuenoMcgurski - I'm not sure, I haven't tried it with anything but the Wii-U Gamecube controller adaptor...but the dock is also compatible with Android phones, so I can use it to play video and games from my phone on my TV. I think that it said it was iPhone compatible as well...
@@JohnnyProctor9 Hey thank you for replying man, seriously. One last question though, have you been keeping up with the firmware updates for the switch console? I’ve read that certain controllers don’t work anymore after certain updates. I assume your controller adapter is not an official nintendo product right?
now i know what to buy because of you thank you
What about using gamecube controllers with this setup. The adapter you had only had 1 USB port and requires 2 for the gamecube adapter to be used on the original dock. So what would be the solution for that?
Cope
Hi would you be kind enough to tell me what brand Type C HDMI adapter that you used and where I can get it from
The official dock's price of $80 is absurd! But maybe not that absurd when you put the price of all these items together:
USB hub: $30
Hori Dock: $10
AC Adapter: $30
HDMI Cable: $10
Total: $80
So in total it makes sense it would be priced as such given all they are putting together in one device with the extra AC and cable.
Though I'll edit the post to mention it. All in all this setup is just much more versatile.
Ty..for price list...
Thank you

Hope that wasn't too confusing..
In other words, how could play Nintendo Switch on an regular old A/V(non-hdmi) tv without using the dock?
thank you for this, i needed to see if you can connect it without the dock because the dock charging port and connecting port on where you set the switch for me would not work and it’s because on the switch charging place one of the prongs was moved and it still charges but doesn’t connect to the dock which is very confusing. Hey just to let you know the converter in the description is off sale. Do you have another recommendation for an adapter?
Unfortunately I don’t know offhand, no. I’m still using the same adapter from when I made this video several years ago. Any adapter that specifically lists the Switch as a supported device will work - if it doesn’t list the Switch, it probably won’t work.
I wish I could use my 3rd party charger on my dock, I can't find how but it's been charging my switch for probably over a year and still it's perfectly fine but I can't even use my switch on my tv because I lost my actual power adapter.

No, it won’t work. The switch lite lacks a video interpreter chip inside meaning video out is not possible. One of the things they removed to cut down the price.

Can I connet my Nintendo Switch via SmartViewTV to TV, like the same way we use the phone to connect to the TV.? Without using all this cables.?
this doesnt charge the switch though, only puts it to the tv?
How about a pillow case for the dock? So everytime you dock the switch you get no scratches. Microfiber would work. Maybe put a logo on it.
Nah , any more ventilation restrictions on dock and it will explode. When I dock switch I look down the slot and make sure the back gets scratched only, switch really likes it back scratched gently
I hear Mario Kart 64 music.
Is it safe to use the switch on a portable monitor without the dock? Will it not brick it or anything?
It's the same amount of Stuff as taking the dock when u have a stand, dumb product plug.
I gotta agree there. The stand is just an open dock.

HDMI charges your switch? Seems like that can cause issue since HDMI isn't made for charging
Kameron Poche ah, thanks
Thomas Kim a type 3 hdmi has 3 ports. A usb, a micro I think, and hdmi. Everything then is output into a micro USB port
*My answer to the title:*
*wiiu*
Can I use this to connect my Switch Lite to the TV? It seems like it might work. What do you think?
It won't work unfortunately - the Nintendo Switch lite does not have whats called a "video interpreter chip" which is what displays the image on your TV when connected to a dock. The port on the switch Lite will only charge it.
