solid state amps forever. My favourite amp of all time is a Peavey Musician 400. I've played Oranges, Marshalls, Fenders, Mesas, Sovteks, 5150s etc.. and no amp and no person has ever given me a convincing argument that I need to play a tube amp. Solid state amps are reliable, cheap, unique and sound great and you can't change my mind

Also, as someone who has been playing for about 25 years I’ve got to stop and say that this is the best time to be a guitarist. Solid state, modeling, and pedal options are better than they have ever been.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider ปีที่แล้ว

In my experience, solid state is better at lower frequencies than tube. My non-scientific guess is probably having to do with the fact that for most solid and tube amps of a similar perceived volume, the solid state has more RMS wattage. While the tube can be driven into pleasing distortion in the mid and high frequencies, that does mean that the solid state has more clean power, and for lower frequencies, they need that energy to move. Consider that most bass amps these days are class D solid state these days. You can't beat clean RMS wattage when it comes to low frequencies.

It's tough because they're both great on their own way. As someone not overly into the big trend of too much "modern" stuff, I love the throaty bass sound of the rockerverb for the sludgier stuff, but the supercrush is superclose! haha. Def has some great things going for it for sure, and quite possibly end up the guts to my next rig. I would to see a more in depth comparison in a less "middle of the road" setting though, and also comparisons of their FX loop sections. That price point though... hard to knock back. Great video.

I recently bought the amp as a "combo" and I'm pretty excited about it. I'm even considering buying this amp as a "head"....
We don't do "metal" but we are at home in rock/hard rock. After several recordings in the rehearsal room, as a guitarist you have to frustratedly realise that your fellow musicians can't hear the difference between "Tube and Solid State". So why carry heavy loads and buy expensive tubes?

Not gonna lie, I sold the amp for financial reasons, but I love the SS (I use a quilter 100w head), it’s hard to beat as a pedal platform!
For most purposes in the 21st century, I think the crush is more than enough firepower.
It won’t have the squishy tube compression, but it’s nothing a bit of practice can’t fix.
For a home/studio rig I can see people getting something fancier, but that’s another story.

Did you ever get the chance to see how both the amps sound in stereo by any chance? I figured that you could get the clarity and high end from the super crush, and the low end from the Rockerverb so that you get the best of both amps.

I'm definitely impressed with "today's" solid state tones; back in the 80's, I hated that nasty sizzle "saturation". It's still there, a little bit (I guessed tone 2 was the solid state), but it sure can be tamed nowadays.

    • @lolaa2200

The early version of ss amps where just using schematics of tube amps but replacing each triod with a bjt transistor (e.g. : fender ss 80's silverface). No surprise that sucks. But if a competent EE design a solid state amp from scratch no wonder he can totally achieve same tone as tube amps and in many way outperform it. Big company like fender and Marshall just did not bother to hire competent EE and/or leave them freedom to do the right thing. Add to that very often they where sold paired with shitty speakers and no wonder ss amps got bad rep.

I've been wanting to add a super crush to my amp collection. I think a solid state amp is a good idea to own as well. all I have are tube amps. what if shit hits the fan and tubes become actually difficult or impossible to get?! id like to know i have a shit hit the fan backup amp and right now I do not. I have a hybrid amp (one of those tiny joyo zombies) but its not enough to handle what I need by a long shot. it sounds pretty okay for recording tho.

I've got the older version of this test, a Rockerverb MKII 100w and a CR120H. The Rockerverb has a better feel when playing for me, however the CR120 is my favorite pedal platform amp. Both are incredible, especially for how affordable the solid state is. Also the older CR120 had more bass than the newer Super Crush heads do, which I like because I'm not paying tight modern metal, I'm playing thick fuzzy doom metal. Orange are awesome, they even make killer pedals.

Honestly, the only place for tube amps is in a studio. But then again, engineers can just run a direct guitar track into an amp SIM with the speaker simulation off, and reamp it into a speaker cabinet and mic it up. However, tube amps can make good client bait.

I was recently looking into getting an orange amp for the purposes of hardcore/deathcore because I absolutely love the sounds they put out, but I couldn't for the life of me find an example that was in that realm, everything was doom metal or older classic metal/rock. Think i might finally ditch my Behringer gmx1200h for an orange.

The solid state had a frequency that makes it sound lower quality for some reason. Maybe around 500hz? Also I'm hearing more dynamics with the tube version.
