    Rockstar Games is the master of the opening cutscenes, and Red Dead Redemption is proof. Ten years after the game's release, let's take a look at why its introduction is so effective.

    Thanks for checking out the video! Can't believe Red Dead Redemption is already 10 years old! Thought I'd try something a little different this month. What do you think? Interested to see more content like this in the future? Let me know!
    While you're here, what's your favourite game opening? I don't think I could narrow mine down to one, so help me out.

      Don't know if it sound like I'm a kid or not, haven't play so much games. I honestly like Red Dead Redemption 2 opening. When I first play red dead redemption 2, it gave me a vibe that no other games give. When the music starts this gave me a feel of pressure and a loss of hope. Rockstar clearly stated the west was at it last moment and is not coming back to it old self. The start was slow and unstable, it needed to do something, anything. They going to fall behind if they don't keep going forward, like when they leave Sean, Davy, John and even Mac got shot because he was unfortunate or maybe he was too careless because he thought the West was the same as always, The law was chasing them and time has changed. The pasting of the game felt right, because it showed how the gangs was thinking and feeling, hopeless. It wasn't about really about Arthur it was about Dutch, it even shown Dutch at the beginning, not John not Arthur but Dutch. It wasn't about Arthur, it was about Dutch and who is he as a character. That why it felt so slow, because Dutch needed to come up a plan, what he needed to be done. When Dutch told you to ride with him, you were never given a choice, Arthur did what he been to. The people who never played Red Dead Redemption or are not used to how the controlls work are uncomfortable, like how Arthur is not used to the harsh snowy place. When they got to Sadie and then went to a gun fight, it show how the western life is barely holding on and coming only a shadow of what they used to be. Dutch, Micah, Sadie and you are together, like how the ending was when you are together again in the mountain. You see how Outlaws ruin other people life so easily. life of a Outlaws are becoming more of a life of criminals then Outlaws. Then when you left you saw the house burn down and this is when you see what Outlaws do to normal people. The mark of what Outlaw do to people when they are in dying need of something, anything so that they could just see another day. This really show how the west was at the lowest and is eventually going to died some day.
      Also sorry for the bad grammar, I'm really bad at english

    I remember playing RDR1 the first time. I was recovering from an operation and on a lot of drugs as a result, but I remember thinking pretty much exactly the same thing. Where's the cowboy stuff? Then we got off at Armadillo and I thought, hey, this is more like it!
    It didn't occur to me that the characters on the train had been placed symbolically to represent the the idea of an liminal era, though. The slow death of a romantic ideal that never really existed, except in the mind of Dutch and Evelyn Miller.
    I played RDR1 for about a hundred hours straight while recovering and it took on a weird and deeply mythical aura for me. I vividly recall the Mexico transition where the Alive Again song plays as Marston flees once again from his troubles across the border. It gave me deep chills and remains lodged in my mind.
    RDR1 and 2 both used music with lyrics in very limited, pivotal moments usually at the start and end. So hearing the song kick up at the start of Arthur's Ride at the end of RDR2 was like getting hit by an emotive freight train.

    The other thing about when John is shot while confronting Bill: not only is there no epic wild west shoot-out to the music of a classic Ennio Morricone-esque western-drama score that culminates in a climactic showdown between John & Bill or Bill narrowly escaping with John on his trail, rather John just quickly being shot down and left for dead before he could even get his gun all the way out of its holster...but John isn't even shot down by Bill himself. Rather, he's taken down by some generic nameless random NPC goon of Bill's. Further highlighting that this isn't some romanticized vision of the old west and the lives of outlaw cowpokes, with John as the almost invincible and always right Clint Eastwood archetype but rather a gritty & grounded story that showcases the harsh reality of their lifestyle and where it brought them all, with John as nothing more than a man. He's not special or morally perfect or impossibly cool & prepared for any and all situations, which he always easily shoots his way out of. He's just a man, a man who isn't perfect and isn't sure of himself or the life he's led, who in that very moment is cool & collected & ready to take them all out, but is scared shitless and clearly heartbroken that he even has to do this to a man who was once his brother. He's not special and certainly not invincible. He isn't a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne who always gets out of any sticky situation no matter what, he can easily get shot & killed like anybody else if that person gets the shot. Its not even a situation where only the boss/important character to the story can touch him. Literally anyone can bring him his death, regardless of how anticlimactic it might be. Because this isn't that world.
    They take the idea of the old west and the old west story that they know we all hold, and wipe away all the frills & makeup to reveal the corrupted, rotten reality. And its beautiful.
    Especially now that I'm nearly finished with Red Dead Redemption II. I may have to go back and play Red Dead Redemption once I'm done just for the sake of total closure...

      @Harrier_DuBois 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This always bothered me a bit, I never undestood why John would even go for his gun. Standing below three men pointing rifles at him from behind cover in an elevated position, with their gang nearby in the fort, and John has no cover. The best shooter in the world could not win that fight. Perhaps he's suicidal?
      Now that I think about it, its similar to the shootout at the end.

      Oliver S. I think part of John was hoping to die right at the hands of Bill Williamson. John might’ve felt discouraged to try to even move forth due to how much wrong he’s done in the past and the idea that his family would be better off without him. I think the only reason he chose to persist was due to Bonnie saving his life. This presented John with a second chance. The chance to redeem himself and leave the old John to die.

      More on this, it clearly shows he’s not a remorseless killer everyone expected to be when playing outlaw. He shows this by offering a chance with bill to work together. John doesn’t want to kill like in so many other spaghetti westerns. John is a man with flaws unlike the perfect Clint eastwood. This is further proved with the introduction of an honour system, rewarding the player for good deeds. The game is about leaving the past behind and starting anew, but sadly johns last keeps catching up to him and he’s far too slow for the world becoming more civilised.

Jack Marston may have lived through much of the Cold War. Considering Jack and John were wondering about the first planes it’s crazy that Jack could’ve one day ridden on a Concorde or seen the moon landing on TV.

    • @dildonius
      @dildonius 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I wonder what became of Jack. The conclusion of the game, with Jack ending Ross for what he did and finally getting closure for himself, his mother, John, and the whole god damn Van Der Linde family really, takes place in the summer of 1914, when Jack was 19 years old. In that period when you're both a boy and a man. World War 1 had just broken out, and the old west was really basically dead at that point too. All the 48 mainland states were officially made into states, there were no more "territories" and certainly no more "Indian territory." Just 48 states, some of which had reservations. Two years later, in April of 1917, when Jack would be 21 years old, the USA would finally enter WW1 for the last year and a bit of the war. Jack undoubtedly would be drafted. Would he willingly go (especially after what the US Army did to him and his family in 1911, killing Uncle and then John)? Maybe. He probably would be feeling aimless. Would he survive? Maybe, he's had an upbringing that would certainly make him most likely to. And what about after? Hed be 25 by 1920 and 34 in 1929, when the markets crashed and the great depression hit. Would he survive the depression era? Maybe. He certainly knows how to live off the land if need be. Hopefully the great dust bowl of the 30s wouldn't ruin any farm he might be trying to start. He'd be 46 years old, when the USA would officially enter WW2. He wouldn't serve in that war unless he had decided to become a career military man. But perhaps he'd have a son who would be drafted. Would that son survive? And would Jack survive losing him in that war, just as he lost his father?
      And let's not overlook the fact that Jack was literally born into and then grew up in a criminal gang, was raised by them, likely would be a veteran of WW1, and would be 25 years old in 1920, 30 years old in 1925, and 35 in 1930. What's special about those years? That is the era in which alcohol prohibition gave birth to modern day organized crime. With Al Capone & the Chicago Outfit and Italian immigrants forming their own Mafia families stateside. Irish gangs, all of that. And all those founding fathers of modern organized crime were about the same age that Jack would be. Would his upbringing lead him into THAT lifestyle when that era came to be. Would he be successful, rise to become an Al Capone-esque boss himself? Who knows?
      Jack Marston would turn 100 years old in the year 1995, meaning that if he wound up dying of old age, he would have lived well into the 1980s and maybe the 1990s too. In fact, if he got really lucky, he might have seen the turn of the millennium in 2000. But then, he'd have been 105. Now, the oldest person who's age has been independently verified and recorded made it to 122 years old. If Jack managed that, he'd have made it to 2017. He'd have still been ALIVE in 2011 when Red Dead Redemption came out...and almost to when Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in 2018! But that's a loong shot. If he died of old age, he'd most likely pass some time in the 1980s or the 1990s. But even then, imagine that. All the changes he'd have seen. The life he'd have led.
      Idk, I like to think of that sometimes...

    When they remaster RDR 1, there's no need to make an entirely new standalone game... they just need to remake and rehaul it to fit in the same game map as RDR2 and add it as a full-priced expansion DLC.
    To make it even cooler, they should add an option on the main menu that either let's you play RDR1 from the start, or let you play through RDR2 and then seamlessly pick up John's story right after he kills Michah and leaves Dutch.

    Rockstar set the bar so high with this game that other games still look and felt outdated and "gamey". I still go back and watch the opening of RDR, including the incredibly underrated confrontation scene with Bill Williamson, which is one of the greatest scenes in any Western I've seen. 3:37 You could also argue that John's hunting down of his former gang members might be a loving act in another way - in the sense that John is sparing them from the horrors of the modern world that they are quickly being swallowed up by. Almost every single member of the gang in both games expresses both trepidation and resentment toward the idea of having to adapt to a 'civilized' America. By killing them, John is probably saving them a lot of grief and suffering in the long run, along with sparing society the trouble of having to deal with them
