Great memories!! As dumb 15 year-olds, my buddy and I would sneak into the back lot of a large Ford dealership. There were 100's of new cars back there - with keys in the ignition. We would go to the farthest corner of the back lot where nobody could see us. We'd get in a Torino very similar to the one in this video. We would try to do a burnout but the engine would just bog down (damn carburetor). Then we realized that the engine was cold and needed to warm up a little. So we would let it idle for maybe 5 to 10 minutes (while nervously watching if anybody is coming). Then, with the engine warmed up, we could do some huge burnouts just like in this video. Eventually we got caught. They didn't catch us doing the actual burnout, but they did see all the rubber we left on the ground. We weren't arrested, just told to leave and never come back.

Me and a pal were checking out this Iroc-Z in a dealer lot one night, around 1994, and the damn thing was unlocked and started with just turning the ignition! We took it down old Gun Club road for some burnouts and donuts before returning it where we found it, no one ever knew!

      Hey Greg, THANKS for sharing!
That's a great old story you've got there, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Not only because it's a great story in itself, but additionally because it sparked my own memories of numerous events I took part in during that same period of time! Equally shocking as any of those stories however, is that I'm sitting here now some 52 YEARS later remembering those events!!! And that in itself is very hard to comprehend, even though its obviously a fact!
      Relatively speaking, we now live
in an entirely different world than we lived in back then. I was also in my early teens in 1971, so am within that same age-group as yourself.
I see some comments expressing shock that you weren't arrested for what you did with the new cars. Young people today can't even fathom that. And for good reason when you think about it. If it happened today, the police would be called, and you'd be arrested no question. First, for "theft" of each vehicle you moved, along with endless other vehicle related charges. On top of that, child protective services might even get involved. Your ability to get your drivers would be likely postponed, and lastly, you'd of course be heavily sued for "damages" to all the vehicles you had touched at all!
So, these few things I just listed previously, that would all be expected as punishment today, (and my little list is just the tip of the iceberg to all that you'd be charged with today), as compared to 1971, for the same situation and circumstances, we were simply sent home, after a stern talking to, by a policeman or MAYBE two that would have come. Today? You'd have probably 5 or 6 or police officers arrive, in probably 4 or 5 police cars, just to handle this same scene, with a couple of young teenagers.
ALL OF THIS just goes to show us how incredibly out of hand, and how top heavy in government control we've become in this country. What many in my age group have thought and fought for decades, has been this constant push by government in becoming a "police state" country. And sadly, we're basically there, nearly that destination but they used a different route than we all thought would be used.
In 1971, we would have had probably just 1 policeman come, dressed in his issued blue shirt, issued pants, blue tie, and his hat, pull up to speak to us. Today by contrast, the mass of cops that would show up, would all be dressed in their standard military gear as they do now. Like a police state. Having full body armor on. Helmets on. Armored vehicles etc.. All with an attitude. Lol Sad, but true. Our once great country has flipped upside down, and citizens have become oppressed, and restrictions get tighter and tighter all the time.
I apologize for turning this rebuttal comment on your great story, into becoming towards a statement of political meaning. It's just terrible how so many of "The people" have sit back and let this happen, to where now the grip is so tight, its hard to believe it can ever be broken.
But ALL of that put aside for the moment, THANKS AGAIN for your great little story!!! It's not only is a pleasure to read, it really brings back MANY fond memories of my own as well.
For example: The day I bought my own Torino fast back, with 429 CJ, except that mine had the 3:91 rear end ratio, unlike this one shown in video which has higher ration rear end, so it's a little sluggish off the line relatively speaking... A great old car. And had I known how collectible and valuable they were to become, I surely would have help onto to mine and treated it accordingly.
I drove it for about 2 years before selling it an moving on.
      🙂 👍👍👍

      Thanks.
      Amen!
I'm not a professional driver, but I have to say that with what cars have now in the way of tech - ABS, Stability Control, Anti - Sway and Traction Control - I find I'm being limited many ways in car control, by the car.
I won't speak in terms of high speed driving, but so many times I was able to avoid an accident by slipping the car sideways, power sliding (you know - the kids think they invented drifting), or intentionally spinning a car.
All the above is now twice as difficult with having to outsmart the "driving aids"
programmed into the chassis control modules - quite often damned near impossible.
Let ME drive the car, I still do just fine!

Me too. I'm not into loud colors, stripes/graphics, spoilers, and fancy wheels and trim. And I only like hood scoops that are functional. Only what actually makes the car faster...not a bunch of extra useless shit just to draw the cops attention to it. The only thing this beauty is missing is the 4 speed. And if I was buying any 429 CJ equipped Ford in 71 I definitely wouldve spent the extra $200 and change for the Drag Pack option. You got so much extra shit for that $200 it was WELL worth it...3.91 or 4.30 rear axle ratio, 11.3:1 compression ratio(I think), 4 bolt mains, solid lifter cam, external engine oil cooler and more. Too good of a deal not to check that box. I wouldve ordered the Drag Pack just to get the beefed up engine internals but I would've probably bought a set of 3.50 gears to swap in so the car is more highway friendly but kept the 4.30's to swap back in just in case I wanted to take her to the drag strip

Drifting was a racing term to describe a driving technique first realized in Formula 1 cars. Power driving through tight corners where all four tyres were not staying in the apparent set path. An intentional 4 wheel slide primarily controlled with throttle. F1 cars were the first cars with enough power to push past traction limits in most corners. Drivers on the edge took advantage to find a faster line around race courses.

If anyone reads this, remember the "Big 3" knew the handwriting was on the wall by mid 60's about Fed regulations. The irony is, Ford engineers designed the 71 Mustang with shock towers designed to drop in the Boss 429. I know the 1971 Mach1 top of the engine choice was the 429scj. But next time you all have a chance to see a 71-73 Mustang at a car show, check out the shock towers. I believe Ford did this to save time and money from shipping the Mustang to Kar-Kraft. Just my thought.

GreenMonsterMurmur. Sorry if I sound like a know it all and I'm not.1970-71, the Cleveland was very much alive with h.p. The 1970 Cougar Eliminator, Mach1,Torino GT had hi-po Clevelands just above 300hp.The 1971 Boss 351 Mustang put out 335hp.But I do believe Sept. of 71 when 72 models came out, there was a drastic cut in horsepower in all 72 models.GM, Ford,Chrysler, AMC. were not immune to the Fed Regulations. The "hi-po Big" block engines were pretty much non existent mid 70's. Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't the 351 Cleveland become a 400 by the mid 70's? Either way, I don't think it put out more than 200hp. The 1974 Mustang didn't even come with a V-8. The good news is the Cleveland motor is alive and well in NASCAR putting out 800hp. Take it easy!
