Why the MK3 Supra 7M-GTE is good tuning platform
The 7M-GTE engine is a hidden gem, often residing beneath the unassuming hood of the MARK3 Supra. its 7M-GTE heart deserves a closer look. It's an underrated performer in its own right, and its unassuming appearance belies the potent powerplant that lies within. Sometimes, it's the overlooked and humble ones that surprise us the most on the road and the track.
In today's video we look at Why the MK3 Supra 7M-GTE is good tuning platform

Great video and advice. 👍👍 Past 400hp it's best to ditch the stock ECU and cam sensor(CPS) to a proper standalone with individual cam and crank sensors for greater reliability. I ran about 500hp on my stock bottom end( with a metal head gasket) and a standalone without a problem. Currently in the process of rebuilding it with forged rods and pistons and push it to 7-800hp. Keep the 7M alive ! #Savethe7M 💪💪
Great pointers I think we should keep the 7M alive it's highly underrated
that's crazy, 500 on a stock bottom end.. is it n/a or are you running the stock ct26 turbo? or are you running a different turbo? I plan on taking my grandpa's mk3 and i need to do my research
@@marcuss.9496 not that crazy for 500 to the crank. The stock 7MGTE is pretty sturdy when tuned well.
Currently running an old but rebuilt bolt-on SP67GT, which is a Precision 6776RE, billet wheel ball bearing turbo.
Full boost at 4000 RPM, but it pulls real nice until redline. Took it to 22psi so far. 😎😎
Get that grandpa's MK3 and keep it alive and well 😉
Sorry for the late reply
I had 720whp on stock block. Did have a hks metal head gasket and arp head studs. Lasted about two years before I bent the crank and spun all the rod bearings lol
The 7M-GTE was - and is - one of my all-time favs! Thank you!!
The problem with the head gasket wasn't with the gasket itself. They changed gasket types but didn't change the head bolt torque specs. They were very under torqued.
Was waiting for that comment 😌
When you deck the head and block, make sure the shop attached the timing cover and deck that with the block simultaneously
exactly right
Fully built 7mgte here in my cressida, great motor.
5mge was a dohc as well, but rest of the info pretty spot on
I Had a 1989 in the Mid 1990s. Best Car I Ever Had. I Miss It.
Need more 7m videos in my life
Or just get a fixed 7M-GE MK3 and don't worry about it lol.
In my case that's what was affordable, but I absolutely adore this car.
When you get a minute have a look at my mk3 7mgte. Great video mate thanks.
Thanks sure will
Just checked out that beast of a car you have, absolute beauty and cant wait to see it do some pulls!!! Might be one of the most impressive mk3 supras ive seen! Great Job! Btw you have a pretty cool black and white reptile too! Cheers!
sold my 7m-gte for 1.000€ (1.100$), it was fun but terrible constant problems.
Like what ?
This was a well put together video, but i think it was made by someone whose never owned a 7m car😂. Those beginning mods would be lucky to get you past 330hp. I had intercooler kit, injectors piggy back ecu and 57trim ct26. Made 391whp. Stock turbo wouldnt do anywhere near that. When it comes to building it, its going to be just as expensive as a 1/2j. Not alot of people make stuff for these cars and youll be paying a premium for 7m "performance" parts. Ive got mine built with everything that can be done, realistically going to keep it around 700hp to try making it reliable.
What does that include ? Been trying to build my 7! For some time now and trying to push 500+ with the best strength in reliability
@@mjcustoms so bottom end I have weisco pistons, eagle rods, arp main bolts and rod bolts, upgraded oil pump, Sr fab oil pickup tube, Sr fab oil retainer bearing kit, head has bc +.5 valves 272 cams, titanium springs/retainers, aro head studs hks stopper head gasket. You absolutely need a dedicated crank and cam sensor not the factory cps as well as switch to a standalone ECU. I have the ecumaster black. Internal wise that's the pretty standard set up. You'll also need a good intercooler and piping. I did a ffim with a 90mm throttle body. Turbo is up to you I have a Borg Warner s366sxe but 500 can be done on a smaller one with less lag. Then I have 3.5" downpipe back exhaust. Marlin crawler rebuilt r154 and a south end stage 4 clutch but act clutch brand is better. If you want to launch the car from a dig you'll want to look at a 1pc driveshaft and rebuilding your diff with a weir stage 1 or 2 kit. I have a Fully Built 7mgte 😎 never wanted the Swap!
Post a video about it I’ll watch
Yep. I love my 7MGTE. So glad I didn't swap it and built it right instead.
Same. My 7m makes over 700 wheel.
@@onetwo9956im getting fuel cut problems when i throttle my gas pedal, starts and idles perfect though
@@zephyr.r First guess, vacuum leak.
that's was Duane ( upgradedsupra) old mk3. what a beast. I remember putting down 543rwhp back in 2004 and held the " stock manifold record" miss that car
I recognized his car but also your name. Pretty sure you bought your MKIII from me minus an engine. I have your dyno video on a hard drive somewhere that I distinctly remember Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend" playing at some point. 😆
@@Dagasm I was stationed in Delaware at the time and purchased the shell from New Port Richey Florida from an forum member ( punkybooster) The hood flew up during transport as well and got damaged. I sure do miss that car.
you know, I love/hate these videos about the a70 supra. Love them because the a70 is a heavily overlooked car, hate them because this is my dram car, and the more people know/want one, the more expensive it'll become, the smaller of a chance I'll have the chance to own one in my life.
It's been too late. I see stock automatic non turbos, fvcked up paint jobs and they want 8 to 14k. It's insane, I bought my 91 supra turbo white package for 2,500 bucks years ago luckily.
awesome video 7m for life
Americans never do the mk3 justice. The JZA70R is the lightest Supra out of Japan with the 1jz, Recaro seats and adjustable dampers. Non of the mk4s are as light. I own one of them and they're much rarer.
the JZA70R roughly 3370lbs? the mk4 is 3350ish.
@@windex3932 that's non turbo manual numbers on mk4
@@ricks_toys still its not that light of a supra
@@windex3932 still lighter than your mom
@@windex3932 at 3370 lbs is light as a z06 c6 corvette
i went 2jz after 3 7m's rod knocks and 2 head gasket on the last engine they're good but only if you have the money, time and knowledge
Did you run stock bearings and stock oil pump on the ones that got rod knock? Since the oil pressure is so low from factory its a big factor as to why they get rod knock so easily. And if you run a steel headgasket they hold up fine. The stock one barely holds on a stock engine.
I got a 7mgte with 90k miles for 600$ 🤘🏼
Hmu I’ll buy it..!
Not to mention, the 7mgte soundtrack 🎶
I support 7M propaganda 💪💪
Love this video
You dont need a metal head gasket and especially not ARP bolts.
A metal head gaskets are more prone to failure (look at some makers Surface finish requirements.), if you aren't in a situstion power wise where you absolutely need it.
What car made 1700hp?
The white one they showed was duanes.
i wanna buy a toyota supra mk3 3.0 petrol 1990 but its automatic idk if its good or bad, waht i heard its good
LFG! 🔥
There are some oil starvation issues. What is the best affordable fix for this?
Improved high flow oil pump pipe, improved oil pump, replace the pressure based oil cooler system with a thermostat based system.
Good info. Thanks
If you have the motor apart get the SR-Fab oil pickup tube. If your going for power get their shaft bearing plate and oil pump gear too.
Ok, thanks
shim the oil pump, drift motion sells one of these haven't had any issues with mine
4:42 the images should be reversed, the 1jz is on the right and the 2jz on the left
(the 2jz is a 3.0 litre (3000) while the 1jz is a 2.5 litre (2500))
Sorry we are trying our best to get our message across but thanks for your opinion!
@@M3R.GTS7 it wasn't an opinion.... your labels were on the wrong engines
Wait.... what about the 1G-GTE?
The 1G-GTE was the 2000cc version that came before the 7M.
it came at the same time as the 7M
1j is 2.5 and two cams
Whose Cressida tho 👀
Best thing I ever did to my mk3, was get rid of the 7M and put an LS in it. I’ve killed half a dozen or so 7ms
how much did it cost?
@@NIVEKFFORHS so I made most of the swap parts. Only hard stuff I had to buy was the Fabbot adapter plate to bolt the LS to an ar5 out of a Chevy Colorado. On parts I’d say I spent around 3500-4000 including engine. Trans. Adapter. Clutch. Driveshaft (just had the old one shortened) I still run the truck intake manifold & accessories so it’s not the prettiest but I can work on that. It runs. Drives. And rips. Way better than the 7m ever did. Currently building a turbo setup for it hope to run it at about 8-10psi and aiming for 400-450 to the wheels.
Thats pretty good @@Tailored_Creations
Lol, I pull away from 5.0s and 5.7 LSs all the time with my 7M. Also a couple 2jzgte mk4s. They would also romp me about half the time too 😮
Yea but then you have the sound of an ls
Do a 1GZ-FE to be a unicorn
or 1FZ-FE
4.5L i6 turbo 😍
@@serial2663 kid you not I just found out about those yesterday
Please keep the 7m cheap 😂 us mk3 owners need the parts
Definitely not sohc
is this ai?????
Comeback? 😂 It was never popular because the 7m was pure garbage to mod. Alot of cracked blocks even after torquing the heads right and getting the better head gaskets. The real issue Toyota discovered was weak metal material in certain parts of the the block itself so under high turbo pressure it cracked. The NA 7mge didnt have this problem once the head gaskets where changed and given the correct torque specs.
Pin first?
The wrong engine to have if you want your supra to make real power..one sadass engine
Human error :/
Only for those who don't know better 😂
@@onetwo9956 or those who can't do math lol
