Foreword: This game cannot be completed without use of a trainer (it's well documented that the game is buggy as hell).
Level 4 has a section at 28:51 where you have to grab a rope to swing over water, but the coders made this impossible. You can't grab the end of the rope since you make contact with the water and die, while if you grab the rope too far up, you can't jump far enough to clear the water and land on the other side.
The only option I had was to play level 4 with use of a trainer that disabled sprite collision so that I could cross the aforementioned section and complete the rest of the game. Even though collision is off, I don't abuse it and play as if enemies and objects can hurt me.
All the other levels are played with the trainer OFF.
The game is heavily influenced by Conan the Barbarian and other high-fantasy lore. Each of the 6 stages is divided into 3 sections: exterior, interior of a fortress and then an end-of-level boss that has to be killed. Along the way, Rastan can collect power-ups and additional weapons to aid him in smiting his foes, which include an axe, mace and a flaming sword that grants him a ranged attack. Enemies can drop vials of poison as well as power-ups, so you have to be careful to check what the enemy has dropped before collecting the item.
It's a real shame that the developers didn't correct the bugs in the game before releasing it since it's a pretty decent port of the arcade classic from Taito. The graphics aren't too bad, all the levels are present and there's a great musical score from Martin Galway. The loading graphic by Martin McDonald deserves special mention as it's easily one of the best for any game on the C64.
Bootnote: The ending is very strange indeed.
    Enjoy!

Once again it is the sid chip that really impresses me. Maybe the best sound chip of it's time, even compared to other chips like the Yamaha in the Atari ST which never sounded that great.

yeah you can see with frame by frame that the sword is animated/moved separate to player sprite. -- really shows that smoothness

Martin Galway's did a nice job here with the music.I like it. The loading screen is awesome! The game sprites would have been better, backgrounds very nice drawn, BUT, the last rope on 3d level, in the lava zone, pissed me off so much, that never played Rastan, again!

      @FantasyWargnome 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

+TheCodedtestament Are you sure that's Level 3 and not Level 4? I remember beating the boss on Level 3, but Level 4 appeared impossible. And after a while of attempting, the game always crashed, that is, after dying in the wrong Place I had to start stuck inside the ground somewhere, where no way to move at all. I couldn't get anywhere, and I couldn't even die, so I just had to power-off. Sucked.

Also of note, the cover art was done by Tim Hildebrandt. Yes, THE Tim Hildebrandt, of "Star Wars" Style B poster fame. Never been able to find a decent scan of the C64 cover: the one on Moby Games was taken from a damaged original, and the highest res I found other than that was 750x750 or so.

Excellent. Other special C64 games for me were Wonderboy, Platoon, Hoppin mad and Beyond the ice palace; like I said those were special and left some permanent audio-visual marks - overall quality is another thing. Many Commodore games had a certain atmosphere to them which of course caught one's imagination. Rastan was one of those.

Man, I had so many shitty C64 games, now with youtube I'm finding out my childhood was lost to so many hours of cassete playing and waiting to play lousy games when there were AMAZING games avaliable somewhere in the world. This is why AVGN speaks to many of us. Shitty Games!
On the other hand, that's why games like Monkey Island were so magical.

How come 28:51 is impossible? You grabbed the rope right in the middle and had no problem passing the water. Or is the collision detection so bad that you would have "touched" the water without trainer?

    • @AL82RetrogamingLongplays

The first two bosses die easier if you use the downward thrust that you used on the Third boss. Just try to get into him and keep jumping up and thrusting Down.
Also, the Third boss can be beaten easily by closing, then striking while crouching (shots will miss).

The music on this is very good and almost identical to the arcade (and is a better than the master system too). The thing what annoyed me about the game was the throwing of the sword feels very slow and cumbersome (compared to the arcade). And also the axe, and ball and chain, dont seem to give u any further reach and enjoyable advantage. That and the bugs on the rope jumping parts which also led to me significantly losing enthusiasm for the game.

I iz in your brain, stealing ur thoughtz!! I was using a cracked version released in 2004 by Hokuto Force since they'd actually fixed some other bugs in the game that caused crashes etc. A lot of people couldn't get past the 3 ropes over the fire, but they didn't give me too much trouble. The 4th level is simply impossible because of that bloody rope over the water - it's difficult enough to even get on the rope, let alone swing across.
