One thing that annoys me about the new BMW infotainment system is that when you scroll the screen it also selects the item where you press on the screen - that gives me a "buggy vibe" feeling about the whole thing.

Pretty sure this is due to the iDrive Selector, where an item needs to be highlighted when scrolling with it.

Playing around in configurator, having those gold trim pieces black really improves the look. Having it completely blacked out actually makes it look really cool, a first BMW in a long while to do that.

I am really interested on how much will this model stay on the market. First what comes to my mind is not the price, but the size of the vehicle. It's huge, and in Europe we don't have roads where you could comfortably drive these and to park easily.

Totally agree! This is gigantic for me, a nightmare for European indoor parkings. X7s look like a panzer when you see them in the streets (I live in Amsterdam). X5-size is the biggest I’d consider, for my tastes

Thanks for the great videos! I thought I liked it initially, but after you pointed out a few things on both the interior and exterior I am not quite sure I would get it. For the EV only mode, did BMW give any indication as to how long the battery would take to charge once the battery was completely exhausted? Thank you.

I like it because every car is starting to look the same nowadays, BMW is pushing the boundaries and being different
When they created the X6 close minded people also complained and the segment that car created (coupe-ish suv if you will) is now one of the most desirable

2.8 tonnes! This is a ridiculous amount of weight. Recent BMWs have got way too heavy, even the new M2, which is supposed to be a small sporty coupe is 1700kg!

I feel the opposite, I'm in love with the fact there are 6, 7, 8 cows in there. So hard to get real leather that will age well and just be comfortable. The styling is amazing, I'm already a fan of monolithic designs and the fact that BMW went that route not only here but with the i7 and X7, as well as I'm sure future models, is just mind blowingly bold. So great to see something DIFFERENT on the road. Reminds me of the radically different designs of 40s-70s US and JDM vehicles. Time to bring that boldness back for our future.

    • @autogefuehl

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html
In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination.
If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex or Desertex or Miriam). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) %. So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette, even in ventilated options.
And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html
More and more natural materials are rising: th-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/yG3z7m6UqNg/w-d-xo.html
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

I guess we're in the age of outrage marketing now. I'm nowhere near able to afford this monstrosity or BMWs other big grilled monsters. But I think cars and car designs for the most part should be drool worthy and aspirational - something desirable that I would actually look forward to owning someday. This however is just ridiculous. It looks unbalanced from some angles. Why does it have to look so industrial and brutal? It does work for some people who seem to like it. To each his own I guess. The interior looks fantastic however! Their interior designers are knocking it out of the park! If only the outside looked as good.
Great review by Thomas and team.

I like it. The design is great especially since it doesn't have that wierd beaver grille from the 4 series and 7 series. The interior looks like it has amazing quality. I don't know about the weight though and the fact that an M model is a heavy SUV. Mercedes AMG one is an actual super car although again from a business perspective, a super car is most likely not relevant right now or good for sales.

    Wow. Thoughts:
1/ the XM concept, amazingly, turns out to be close to 100% reality.
2/ even after looking at this for 10 minutes, the iX looks ugly. So the XM is not the ugliest BMW. That is something.
3/ determinedly retrograde. Leather seats, no fully electric option, vast weight. Unfortunately, I think BMW knows its market. This is for people who really don’t care, and want us to know it.

Great review, as always, Thomas - but, I find it hard to figure out how BMW, the company that, nearly a decade ago, gave the world such ground-breaking, innovative models as the i3 BEV and i8 PHEV, have lost their uniqueness and vision so now simply pump out over-sized, resource-wasteful SUV after SUV...
I guess the lure of the Chinese yuan is too great to ignore... 😕

Nothing screams Motorsport more than a 5 metre plus car that's almost as tall as Tyson Fury and weighs the same as Godzilla.
Come on M division, give us a proper M car and leave the endless SUVs to BMW.
