- The 2023 / 2024 XM is only the second vehicle the M division has ever produced themselves. The other one? The M1. This time however, things are different. Obviously it's not a supercar so that's a change, but also it's not entirely new. It's closely related to the X5 and X7, but has a very different and confusing mission: to compete with the Urus, AMG G-Wagon, and the Bentayga. Oh, and they gave it a plug. The result is an SUV that's very fast, not not as fast as an X5, handles incredibly well, but not as well as any other M-car, is efficient, but (you guessed it) not as efficient as any other BMW PHEV, and luxurious, but not quite as swanky as an X7 or 7-series. Then, there's the price tag...

Same. (I'm on up to date versions of Firefox and MacOS. You?) I gather this happens sometimes with videos that haven't finished some kind of processing yet on TH-cam's end, which would make it not our issue. You might have more options if you come back to it later.

Alex, I was alarmed when BMWs passed the 2 ton barrier some time ago but the idea of '3 tons of BMW fun' makes my brain hurt too. Having said that, I had to laugh when you told us this behemoth is more efficient than the plug-in Outlander. 😂🤣

I think the problem is that BMW just doesn’t make vehicles for most journalists/enthusiasts anymore. BMW has enough cache that many people don’t know or care about the history of the company or driving dynamics. It’s a BMW that’s fast and has a nice interior. That’ll do it for most.
This car looks like a concept car and should've stayed as a concept.

Love it or loathe it, it's a perfect encapsulation of BMW as a car company in 2023. I was pretty shocked by it just seeing it in photos, but in person it's so much worse.
They renamed the series so they could have odd numbers for sedans and even numbers for coupes. Nothing to do with the m1. As the 1 also had an m model called the 1M.
"Coupe" is a very loose term, given that the GCs have 4 or even 5 doors.

Wouldn’t it be great to have that hybrid system on the B48 engine. 320 hp, 40 mile EV range, 0-60 5sec.

I wish I could help you but I don’t understand it either. And I don’t understand why a company that says they are all in on going electric would spend the time and money needed to build something like this. How about a X7 electric. That is something that is more important.

iDrive 8 is an abomination. The 8 shortcut buttons are gone. Climate control buttons are gone. Heated seats and ventilated seats are now have to be turned on / off in software. Manual turning on of low beam headlights and PARKING LIGHTS are in iDrive. Was the turn-style headlight switch too complicated, for BMW? Even the HEATED STEERING WHEEL BUTTON is gone. No one can dispute that having to navigate a software menu to do simple tasks is easier and safer than a switch you can locate and turn on, without looking, by memory. The fact the common sense has been lost around this is totally mind boggling. Kool Aid drinkers will say use voice commands. But the voice commands are slow and half baked, at best. You can easily press a button and have your attention back on the road before the voice system is even ready to take your command. Won't buy another BMW until BMW undoes iDrive 8 buttonless stupidity.
Preach! They do not use regular every day use cases when developing these cars nowadays. They prioritize the design and not the functionality.
iDrive 7 plus the design of the dash of the pre-facelifted bmw's were perfect
no buttons = cheaper, that's why
IDrive 8.5 has been released, and is a free update. All of those stuff you mentioned has been brought back, but digital…but still back.

Why did they call it M? They should've just called it X. I'll get it when it depreciates to 75k in 3 years. $150k is way too much.
i think the trick up BMW's engineering sleeve here is the "pre gearing stage" for the electric motor. meaning the motor spins at about 60% higher RPM than the engine. this gives it more torque but also possibly better efficiency. combined with the 8 speed transmission this is probably how it beats the Mitsubishi in electric economy. the 200 lbs of torque of the motor is BEFORE pre-gearing, which boosts it up to over 300 lbs and probably why those launches are so hard.
this strikes me as a car for professional athletes and minor celebrities

I think BMW realized it doesn’t have the tech to take on new SUV EVs from China and Tesla so it’s going the other direction with performance and angular design to take customers from Lamborghini and Bentley
Front end styling reminiscent of the Dodge Ram.
They’re scratching their heads as to what’s the best way to go about beating the Cadillac Escalade V. They thought the X7M would do it, but boy were they wrong.
The Escalade is larger than anything BMW makes, this is targeted primarily at other status super-SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus & Mercedes G-Class.

The new 2020 X7 shares nearly identical dimensions with the outgoing model Escalade which they may have thought would get the job done except the Cadillac grew in size again in 2021. Same story with the GLS which shared similar dimensions with outgoing model Escalade.
Germans are looking to create a flagship that can rival the prestige of the Cadillac Escalade here in North America. This is an attempt to dethrone Cadillac’s flagship with a new flagship of their own, as Cadillac dethroned the M5 with the CT5-VB. Think of it as payback, but I don’t think BMW will be nearly as successful as the Cadillac Escalade V.

While the X7 is almost sized similarly to the SWB version of the previous Escalade, that's the small one.
Adding to that, the last gen Escalade was 4" taller (current one is 7" taller) than the X7. The X7 (like the GLS) are primarily intended to be luxury alternatives to popular midsize-3-row SUVs like the Honda Pilot. (Or really, an X5/GLE with an extra row of seating).
Bmw is going cash-grab mode before its doom.
Makes sense to me. Looks like the OG M went after exotics. This X|||M goes after today's most profitable exotics.

This is a car meant for TikTok influencers that know nothing about cars. Aside from gas mileage, there is little reason to get this over an X5M Comp
The headlights look like the ones on my Hyundai Santa Fe
They got it wrong om…1. Co.ours don’t suit the design basically the colours makes it look ugly…2. It needed an air suspension 3. It shouldn’t have competed in-house eg X5Mcomp 4. It should have been far less stiff…

im sorry but this is hurting my brain & eyes
I test drove that car and was astonished how terrible it was. It creeks and feels like the chassis is gonna fall apart. Transmission was lazy and a/c was terrible. The car would not cool down after a 15 min drive
All fake engine noises need to be killed imo. I think the Lexus UX has the worst augmented engine sound
It sure LOOKS nice, but the combination of extreme weight, confused nature, no physical AC controls, fake engine noise that can't be turned off, and a really terrible ride will keep me FAR AWAY from this poser-mobile.
Comically ugly. Just when you think BMW can’t make something uglier they do this. This is the first BMW where the wheel design is equally horrible. I am surprised to see your B + rating for ride quality. I thought it deserved a C at best

BMW has had some rough design moments but this is by far the ugliest car they’ve ever made. It hurts to look at it….
