Same, and it still can be necessary to eject even if you're not read/writing to a drive. IE: On one of my older machines, if I *don't eject,* when I plug cards back in I get asked to "scan card for errors" *every time.*
its important because even if its not network driver. they need to add the disc since you pay for a full product. (where the driver is a part of) and some people got a limited amount of data everymonth so for those its usefull as well (even though most drivers are quite small in size)
7:42 I relate to Number 8 on such a deep level lol. I'm one of the people who are "good with computers" according to friends and relatives. My secret? I have the incredible, arcane ability to look at letters with my eyes and use my brain to decipher their meaning. One may call this ability "being able to fucking read".
Mine uses Freon, how often do I change that? LOL, but seriously, surely even this cooler needs to be changed every 20 years or so, it has to degrade, it has oil to lubricate the compressor. I should actually probably check this since I use phase cooling. I never got the point of oil cooling though, like sure it looks ok I guess, but what a pain for switching parts, mines bad enough making insulation for each card and sometimes special heaters. I wouldn't want it to be any slower of a process than it already is. I like to modify mine a lot, so when I get bored, it gets an air scoop or air ducting for the motherboard, or other special coolers designed for it. Oil cooling wouldn't leave much of an option other than decorations like a submarine or castle at the bottom. Maybe its just for people that like to "set it and forget it", but what's the fun in that?
I used to work on a computer from someone who loved getting viruses no matter what AV I threw on it he managed to bug it up. He had a NIC that required a driver. I eventually just carried a flash drive with his driver
Funny how Windows only users have no clue. In Linux universe, after booting install media, you have fully vorking OS. All you need to do is plug (if you haven¨t allready) RJ-45, or type WiFi password.
@@iaon652 Well, that sure talked me into being a Linux user. Now just tell me how to reinstall the 300 or so games I own and where to find my C: drive.
Most hardware, fine, install from the manufacturer's web site. There are 2 pieces of hardware where the installation is required. The internet connection and the motherboard. If either of these is not directly supported by your OS install disk, you will not be able to connect to the internet to download the most recent version.
7:48 my family is always like that with me, they think I know EVERYTHING, my father sometimes asks me how to do things in facebook and he's like "you always use the computer you should know" as if the more time you use a computer the more you know about everything
The one about fixing computers. Spot on. You have no idea how many people have asked me to fix an issue, only for me to have to then google the issue because I have no fucking clue whats happening. And when I do fix the issue (Because I googled the fix) they think I fixed it all by myself and bombard me with more issues to fix...
And people not understanding that just because you work in IT, you aren't knowledgeable about all areas of computers. IT is pretty broad, kind of like assuming all doctors know all medical areas. It doesn't typically work that way - a lot of IT people become specialized.
Safely eject thumb drives, it is still needed. Windows will cache the files to the RAM before copy it to the thumb drive. Last time thumb drives has a flashing LED, but now, you can't be sure. You still need to, unless you are super sure (but then again, Windows 10 now auto defrag your thumb drive from time to time, so...). Installation CD is still recommended, because sometimes if your systems locked up (such as when formatting for OS installation), some drivers may not be available in the OS installation media. I've been through this often where people messed up with their drivers and their system couldn't connect to the Internet. So... It's good to have CDs as the final frontier options before condemn the whole systems. It may be outdated, but at least it can run before you find updates in the net. Java is an important tool. Some software use it because the software created by Java can be ported easily in multiple platform (Windows, Linux, Mac, and your Blu-Ray player and many of the Internet TV apps). Computer magicians (or whatever you like to call) do exist. The Internet can't solve your bad memory, intermittent connection, and probably your screen if it goes black altogether and the system just idling and not responding to any command as if there's motherboard failure. Yes, Internet is our guide, but that magic requires some troubleshooting. But above all else, very nice information. I don't say all are correct as YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), but still, it is best to keep some of the old myth in practise (such as safely remove drives before unplugging it) just to be safe.
Many people can figure out whats wrong with a PC. The problem is, is that takes time and a lot of work and testing. So if someone else already did it and posted it, why shouldn't anyone else take advantage? I've had to hunt down strange problems before, many times. But the first thing I ever do is a google search too :P.
Defrag is disabled for that letter if W10 detects a thumb drive (at least, on my system). There is still added latency while it looks up the next block . Tiny, but there
Ben Tan you are the man and 100% correct. I've had 15 GB thumb drives suddenly become 32 MB thumb drives and all because I didn't perform the sacred ritual of safe ejection. ThioJoe needs to go.
Yes, that and wifi card drivers. There have been times I could not get online to download the driver because the wifi card would not work without the driver installed!
Grampa: "Hey (insert child name here), could you fix this issue on my Windows 95 PC? Child: "Sure." (Looks up issue on google) Grampa: "Wow, you are so smart!" Child: "Oh, uh ok grampa."
Enzo Valente say you are playing a game and use the shortcut - your cpu temps will go down by a lot and your overall system performance is gonna skyrocket
Good minimal practice but you can still build up a charge while working (Chair rolling on the floor, clothes rubbing against each other…). ESD is *NOT* a myth. Why would manufacturers go out of their way to put components in antistatic bags if these weren’t needed ? They cut corners everywhere but not there ? Strange… In fact, ESD damage, while unlikely to completely kill your device/component these days, because engineers take all the coutermeasures they can at the design and manufacturing stages (protections, hardening, more grounding pins closer to the fragile parts…), can still affect both longevity and reliability. Because it’s so insidious, you’re likely to not notice immediately since the part will mostly function albeit probably out of spec and when the time comes for the part to fail, you will blame something else. In fact, countless bluescreening computers and RMA’d parts can be traced to having been mishandled somewhere along the line and having damages at the silicon level (pitting) either on the CPU, RAM or PCH. Unfortunately, you need a Scanning Electron Microscope to assess the damage and nobody takes the time to do this kind of post-mortem. We just replace the part with a new one and move on. The idiot (he called it!) in this video knows that his personal experience is enough to justify not wearing one and clearly doesn’t know enough on the matter to have an informed opinion. Search "esd damage electron microscope" in your favorite search engine to see what it makes to silicon components. It might change your mind.
7:47 I’m the only “smart” person in my school when it comes to computers and every one assumes I know everything about the computers and can fix all of their problems. The school uses Macs while I use windows. I barely know anything about macs and I usually press random buttons to get it working
I've never really used MacOS, but I've used it last year, in a hotel. There were some macs on the hotel lobby, and I decided to use one of them, so when I saw the desktop, i knew that it wasn't windows and this was Mac, but I didn't know how to use it, and I was wondering where was the button where ill see all the programs, So I found safari browser on the dock, so I only used safari on my first time on using Mac. But when the corona crisis ends, hopefully I will find a Mac somewhere and I can take a look at MacOS
@Enhbayr Bilegt I've used dial up. It was shit. 56k. Dropped constantly. If it didn't drop constantly and corrupt downloads and junk it would have been fine.
Safe eject usb drive was quite important in the USB 1.0 era. USB 1 was so slow that Windows 'buffers' the file copied to the USB where windows says it's 100% copied, but it's actually still writing. In fact it's 100% copied to the write buffer, but perhaps only 40% actually written to USB so you had to wait, even though it said 100% copied. Since USB got a lot faster from USB 2.0 and forward, this was no longer a problem as the drive could keep up with the writing speed.
Dario Volaric this is absolutely not true. I've written large disk images over USB 3, and still had to wait a couple minutes for sync to complete. The bottle neck is going to be writing to the cheap ass flash in your $5 flash drive and not the USB interconnect, especially if the drive needs to trim released space first.
he did specify in the USB 1.0 era, USB 1.0 was 12 mbits or about 1 MB per second, when the typical desktop HDD could manage about 30 MB per second at that time, the USB 2.0 era was 480 mbits or about 60 MB per second which is about the same speed as most desktop HDDs at that time, and faster than most laptop HDDS, so yes that issue was resolved with the arrival of USB 2 (with the exception of people using SSDs or RAID arrays)
+Redgreengamer The original Java version does indeed work on Java, but the Bedrock version, which was written in C++ for better performance compared to Java, doesn't need it. While it's not important to have Java to play Minecraft, you still might want to play Java edition for various reasons. For example, most mods for Minecraft were made for the Java version.
Number 8 is very near to my heart. I just spent three days working on simultaneously updating from HDD to SSD, and BIOS to UEFI with little technical experience. Coupled with errors that nobody's ever seen before, this was predictably a hard time...
I have to say, for #4 - Installation discs, that there might be time when you do need them. One example. Even though you can download most drivers from the manufacturer's Website, try doing it without the driver installed for the network adapter. Yes, you do need internet to get them, but without the driver for the network card, you're screwed, unless the OS comes with the driver. Also, to install drivers, no matter where you get it from, it may still require you to insert the Windows disc, but in most cases, with modern computers, Windows installation may already be on your hard disk, in a separate partition.
Why would youtube hate your channel? You do great videos man. I love them all. They're crazy if they hate your videos. You do a service for people. This deserves a commendation. Keep up the great work you do. Thanks for your effort and dedication.
Software installation discs can be good if they have a network driver that windows doesn't have. Even if it's out of date the driver will get you online so you can get the latest version
Number 8 is also pretty close to me, and I make my work's IT department shudder when I come to them with a problem since it's always very complex. I think one time I gave them an error code that had zero google results.
Using the installation disk sometimes saves time, after/during the install the application always looks for updates. So you don’t have to look at version lists and specifically pick out each and every program you need. The disk will give you those choices. It’s still useful..
My mom told me touching the windows sticker (yes the sticker not the key) would make the computer explode and die *I never believed that.* So to defy her, I said "MOM COME QUICK!" and she came and was like "What's wrong?" *i touched the sticker. i still tease her to this day about it. i just go "hEy mOm rEmEmBeR tHe wiNdOwS sTiCkEr? dOnT tOuCh iT, rEmeMbEr tHaT, oKaY??* she gets triggered whenever I bring the sticker up lmao
I once touched the windows sticker and the fbi showed up. (Side note to Karens: it's NOT a joke, don't touch your window stickers. I was given 50 years imprisonment.)
One of the cases where properly ejecting a thumbdrive is _mandatory_ is when using a database program: those constantly update the file, and present a high chance of corrupting it if you just yank the drive out.
As far as wrist band goes, the issue is a difference in voltage potential. If you are neutral, and the computer is neutral, but the boxed CPU has static, you could still be in trouble with a simple wrist strap. You can accomplish the same thing as a wrist strap by touching the power supply side case, that grounds you to the computer. Still a voltage potential to the CPU though. But like you said, almost no one has had an issue with this.
Ugh as an IT i hate situations where people just assume I know anything and everything vaguely compuer related. 'Why can't you fix my phone? I thought you are IT' 'It is a microwave it is simpler than computer. Why can't you fix it?' 'I have this obscure piece of accounting software. why cant you tell me how it works? You are IT after all'
@@user-no3tu9kh3p I think you'll find that is true with almost any degree. Rarely are colleges teaching you information needed in the real world in any subject.
Worse, is they try to fix it first then bring you all the parts in a box, along with the mess they made trying to fix the original problem...those are the ones I hate, and I will not work on.
I love when friends and family expect you to fix their stuff just because "you're good with computers." Like you've got nothing better to do on a Friday night than reinstall their Windows and run a thousand updates. I've got an idea, while I spend hours removing the adware from your machine, maybe you can come over and pull dandelions from my back yard or wash my car?
Ounce of Tech I'm still being told that when we boot up our crappy laptops at school. they take 1/2 a lesson and we can't use our phones even though it saves time.
Cameron Cook if the tech people at your school told you that, don't listen to them. they don't know how to reset the time on a MAC which is the easiest thing to do. first you have to download 10+ bullshit apps that don't do anything and then they finally realize "oh shit it's in the settings. I'm just going to pretend like that was all to make sure it was in settings to not piss off every student that knows anything about technology. " I haven't had a great time with tech support at my school and none of my friends have either. we go there when we have to if the time on our computers gets too off or something else happens where you need admin to fix it. my point is don't trust any of the shit tech "support" tells you because most of the time it's bullshit
ThioJoe The main danger with static is not that you fry a component, but that you will weaken the system, which will eventually fail sooner than it would otherwise have done. My first job was as an aerospace component engineer. Someone had casually picked up a CMOS DIL component in the lab that I had put aside for constructional analysis, and I'd yelled at him for not wearing a wristband. He demanded that I test it, and I did. The chip checked out perfectly. However, the next stage was to crack the glass frit-seal and remove the ceramic lid. On inspecting the chip with a light microscope, I saw a dark spot on one of the traces. I then etched the "glassivation", the glass layer on top of the tracks, with a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and glycerol - very nasty stuff. I then gold sputter-coated the component and put it in the scanning electron microscope. I found the location of the spot and saw it was actually a crater in the trace. Using a clever trick called EBIC (electron beam induced current), I was able to send microamp pulses of electricity down specific traces (etching the glass doesn't eliminate it, it just highlights more detail, so the gold layer doesn't ruin the electrical performance of the device). The edges of the hole glowed brighter, and then the trace broke. This meant a transistor had died. The other transistors in the device would now all have to handle more current than normal, and weaker ones might fail. This would leave the rest to handle even more. This would go on until the device was dead. But in those days, the tiniest, weeniest trace width available was 1um (1000nm):.Modern device traces are in the 10-20 nanometre range, easily ten times smaller than when I was a component engineer. Modern electronics density is incredible: and also its sensitivity to ESD. I think that was bad advice, Joe. At least plug the computer into the mains and hold onto a metal part connected to earth. I still subscribed to your channel, though.
This is Moses I'm about to buy a new PC. TJ what would you suggest for a beginner,I have heard you talk about Ram.. THX AGAIN TJ.GIVE ME A COUPLE DAYS AND I WILL BE PAYING TO YOUR PROGRAM FOR THAT MOUTHY FEE.
my friend this thing of the esd is something of incredible for me. let me explain please. if a chip or cpu or else is capeable of withstanding that current even the mobile cpu's have a battery of aroun 16volts up to 19 volts,so how can we humans with that little amount of electricity that we loose or throw into devices , how is it possible to make damage. I mean a boxer that stands a 30kg punch, how can a baby of a few kilos knock him to the ground? THANKS IN ADVANCE AND SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH.
@@Rayxxx19741 Generally, a discharge will have to be in excess of 3000 volts before you feel a discharge. So even if you don't feel a discharge, that doesn't mean you haven't introduced a hefty discharge into the system.
I have no computer repair knowledge, and have never tried to repair other people's devices. But it is almost 20 years that I repair my own devices. In the beginning, I had to visit forums and specifically ask questions. But as Thio says, afterwards, a good search is enough for solving the problem.

IIGrayfoxII 12Mb/s is certainly enough for most things, even streaming 1080p video. Downloading games and such (files over 2GB) take a couple of hours though. Still waaaay better than what we've had before!
I started with 1500kbps. Felt it was kinda slow, even for its time. Then began a series of upgrades. Now I'm on 500Mbps but still feeling kinda slooooowwww
10. I completely disagree with. When handling ESD sensitive parts one should always either use an ESD bag or wear an ESD wrist strap. Even if you or someone else has touched ESD sensitive parts many times without damage, there's that one time when something will get damaged. Also sometimes one doesn't necessarily feel the static electricity shock, yet enough voltage went through the board to damage something. Why take the chance? Just wear the wrist strap.
Admittedly I have handled ESD stuff without a wrist strap and nothing has been damaged, but I do make it a practice to use a wrist strap. At my local outdoor flea market I can't count the times I've seen someone selling used motherboards, memory or cards and they just have them sitting on the concrete table no ESD protection at all. Even though some of it I could use I don't even bother because I don't know if it is any good now.
jmcinvale I bought a video card off a polyethylene tarp at a yard sale once. It was an AMD so it was no good to begin with, but it still worked when I plugged it in. If you want to call what AMD cards can do working.
I think the main thing is that the anecdotal evidence of "I never fried anything" means nothing - ESD damage would often manifest in small strange errors years after they occurred, basically shortening the lifespan of the component, which means that even if you get ESD damage, you wouldn't know about it.
Back in the day, say in Windows 98, it was generally a good thing to restart after every installation. That was because most programs either misused the registry and or they modified key operating system files to make their program run. Neither is the case in today's computers. What you said about hackers targeting windows more I totally agree on, and some die hard Mac users claim that they are impervious to viruses and hacking which is indeed false. As far as manufacturers including installation discs is because they want to coax you into installing their software so that they can con you into thinking you need to buy more of it when in fact all you really need is to load the drivers only.
Footnote to #3: This also depends on how you have your thumb drive configured. There is one configuration that does require you to eject it first or it can ruin the drive. I believe it's the one for quicker access, it even tells you this when you switch the configuration.
That reminds me that someone posted there Mom or Grandma (i don't remember which one is guilty one of the 2) believes cats are cold blood do to they like there sun baths

properly unmounting external storage actually is important. Most times you'll be fine if you just rip a USB drive out, but if it's in the middle of writing a file (and thanks to journalling filesystems you won't know when that is), it really can corrupt the entire drive.
Yup, ESD is a big deal and this guy says don't worry about it. There's too many factors to consider and it takes less ESD than you can feel to destroy a component.
Agreed. I've never had a component fail due to static electricity but it can pack quite a punch for delicate components. Especially bad in northern climes in the winter, where heating can make the air in the building very dry. Man-made fibers are better than they used to be, but you still need to be careful with carpeting and clothing. Best to discharge yourself on some grounded metal before poking around the innards of a computer or other electronic device. I generally have a few old computers around at any time. So I just plug one in (3 prong grounded plug) and touch the metal chassis before delving into the innards of a device (it doesn't need to be turned on, just plugged in). But any properly grounded bare metal (water pipe etc.) will do.
Nguyen Dinh Tuong I have 16kbps on my mobile phone, it's totally useful. Maybe you can't watch videos, but for Wikipedia, Instant messaging and Facebook it's cool
IDK if anyone commented this but a good way to avoid static electrical damage is to always touch the outside of the metal case before you reach in! any built up electricity will discharge there instead of on a component.

Myth #3 *was* correct in Windows 2000: here the write cache was enabled, so when your copy process said it was finished, it still was not finished. Since Windows XP they deactivated the write cache on USB flash memory, so you don't need that anymore.
Well its deactivated by default but it can be still enabled. Or it can be still in cache because USB bus was busy or something. He is just talking nonsense.

8:15 As a workstudy in my college's I.T. department, that is extremely true. It can be easy for us to just shout RTFM (Read The Frackin' Manual) but for many, there is a huge difference between reading and actually understanding. I've heard rumors about people who would get tripped up if you put the projector on "Extend" rather than "Duplicate." Some people just don't know how to technology, plain and simple.
Ehm... the last time I installed a small recipe Printer I had to rely on the CD which was shipped with it, since there is no website and Windows didnt have the driver.
Yea, I've run into issues like that where the drivers either aren't available online or the hardware is so old that the only way to even look for updated ones is to install the outdated drivers from a disc, i.e. the Bluetooth dongle on my laptop.
ABW941 yeah, i was about to write a commentabout myth #4 because even tho they are surely outdated manufacturers still have to assure you that "plug-n-play" user experience, even if that means you have to install their software to use the device. I don't wanna start talking about the possibility of an device installation with the absence of internet, but these "obsolete" CDs are a must: 1) default Windows drivers might not support certain functionalities of the device where proprietary software enables them 2) it's a reliable source of getting the device working all times. Especially when manufacturers use unified software and start loosing support for older devices with newer versions. It's easier for the average Joe to install the CD content rather than downloading the latest shiniest driver from the generic download page and wonder why it isn't working and troubleshoot the problem down to the fact that the latest version of the driver which supports their device is X.XX and not Y.YY which they've downloaded
He never mentioned printers, just things like monitors. No one in the last 10 years has needed a disk for monitors. Gaming keyboards, perhaps, but every day ones again, they are plug and play.
its really useful i wish i had my motherboard driver cd because when i reinstalled windows it wouldnt work so i had to go on another computer too download the mb and network driver... kinda nice to have
Yep, I agree with you. Anyone saying otherwise has never done a cold system installation in their life lol. You can't even install Chrome without the SP3 and the new online lib's. But you can't even get that far if you don't have the installation system disc(s). I know most better computers will have a partition setup for that but how is that going to help you if you're installing new hardware? I remember moving and not having internet yet so I went to get a coffee and used an old Palm TX to download the files and then transferred them to the PC when I got home. Would have been a lot easier if I hadn't misplaced those damn CD's hahaha
As a experienced it specialist, I would have to agree that most problems we can find the fix online. In some cases I send it to other IT specialist that can figure it out, but other times I have been successful fixing something that has no fixture help online. Fixing a problem entirely on your own is risky and can cause even more damage. We take that risk.
Don't need an anti-virus; use NoScript in browser and check sites before enabling their scripts. - Nothing beats backups and smarts. - and yeah; I go to and download from the shady adult , and pirate sites.
Yeah. As long as you have backups, you shouldn't be really worried about viruses. I haven't got a virus since I switched to Linux 6 years ago, just needed to use common sense(and on dodgy sites virustotal) when browsing.
Thumb drives. I have quite a few times had problems with a USB after simply pulling it out. In a very few of those cases, perhaps something was still open or still being written to, but in most, the operation was completed. I tended to check that first, before pulling it out. Then I'd find about a quarter of the drive was corrupted, including the partition table and the file index... This has happened in different versions of Windows and different versions of Linux. It IS a good idea to 'eject' the drive before you remove it, particularly if there's something important and hard to replace (like university assignments) on it...
I find memory cards and flsh drives simply dont last very long if you do lots of big write jobs. Fill em a few dozen and they are toast. Ive tried playing it safe with ejecting and it's never helped. If there are programs accessing your usb drives automatically with no warning then you probably have bigger issues. Also if I want to write say 50gb of music to a 60gb card... dozens of files will have messed up meta data and errors. Do small jobs with plenty of reboots.
I recently had this happen to a thumb drive, I taken it from my Linux rig to my windows rig. I had done this countless times, with countless thumb drives. This time though, it screwed up. Now bow rigs treat it as if it were a new thumb drive, you know when you plug one in for the first time, Windows does the whole "This drive is not yet formatted blah blah blah." or whatever.
#10 -- YES, I HAVE FRIED A COMPUTER WHEN OPENING IT -- *AND I **_WAS_** WEARING THE ANTI-STATIC WRIST-BAND* since that incident, I don't bother. Basically, all I do is leave the machine plugged in -- turned off, but plugged in -- so that the frame is grounded. No matter what you're doing, you're probably going to be touching the frame, so you'll be grounded also.
Absolutely agree on this one, the key is to ground yourself before you touch something that is static sensitive; leaving the PC plugged in so the frame is grounded allows you to do this easily before you touch anything sensitive. Also I/O's on IC's are designed to handle ESD anyway.
Everyone knows that you shouldn't delete system32. The only reason you would ever want to modify the system32 folder would be to rename it to system64 to upgrade to a 64 bits system. But you don't really have to do that anymore, most system are sold already upgraded. Sometimes you have to pay extra though.
I don't even think this is serious. Like, its mostly bullshit or what he thinks. I agree with the magicians stuff and wristbands but thats pretty much it.

oscaristheboss you don't

that reference is perfect lmao

If either of these is not directly supported by your OS install disk, you will not be able to connect to the internet to download the most recent version.

Does Win10 actually automatically defrag thumb drives?
Isn't it useless to defrag EEPROM?
Many people can figure out whats wrong with a PC. The problem is, is that takes time and a lot of work and testing.

The bottle neck is going to be writing to the cheap ass flash in your $5 flash drive and not the USB interconnect, especially if the drive needs to trim released space first.
i dont use safe eject 99% of the time and ive never had a corruption issue, even 10 years ago
I've needed to format USB 2.0 drive a few times because of too fast ejecting. Don't want to go through it again.
he did specify in the USB 1.0 era, USB 1.0 was 12 mbits or about 1 MB per second, when the typical desktop HDD could manage about 30 MB per second at that time, the USB 2.0 era was 480 mbits or about 60 MB per second which is about the same speed as most desktop HDDs at that time, and faster than most laptop HDDS, so yes that issue was resolved with the arrival of USB 2 (with the exception of people using SSDs or RAID arrays)
Good point, i had forgotten about the write cache policy, this is definitely another reason it is no longer an issue today

Just touching some non isolated metal will discharge you.

Cameron Cook if the tech people at your school told you that, don't listen to them. they don't know how to reset the time on a MAC which is the easiest thing to do. first you have to download 10+ bullshit apps that don't do anything and then they finally realize "oh shit it's in the settings.

@@Rayxxx19741 Generally, a discharge will have to be in excess of 3000 volts before you feel a discharge. So even if you don't feel a discharge, that doesn't mean you haven't introduced a hefty discharge into the system.

I don't like wearing wrist straps, that's why.
LOL
Admittedly I have handled ESD stuff without a wrist strap and nothing has been damaged, but I do make it a practice to use a wrist strap.
At my local outdoor flea market I can't count the times I've seen someone selling used motherboards, memory or cards and they just have them sitting on the concrete table no ESD protection at all.
Even though some of it I could use I don't even bother because I don't know if it is any good now.

I bought a video card off a polyethylene tarp at a yard sale once.
As far as manufacturers including installation discs is because they want to coax you into installing their software so that they can con you into thinking you need to buy more of it when in fact all you really need is to load the drivers only.

char sage: The grammar FBI is here to tell you the difference between “there” and “their.” “Their” is only used as a possessive pronoun. Just remember that, and you are good. “There” is an adverb, indicating a specific place, or used to indicate a fact exists. “There were 50 ships in port.” Vs. “There were 50 ships in their port.” I hoped this helped.

properly unmounting external storage actually is important. Most times you'll be fine if you just rip a USB drive out, but if it's in the middle of writing a file (and thanks to journalling filesystems you won't know when that is), it really can corrupt the entire drive.

You should always discharge your static on any large metal device before touching your components.
Yup! And, there is a reason why components usually come in an anti-static bag! In case of accidental static discharge! (y)
The thing is though, just opening up your case usually will do that. Thus why he never had any problems as he never realised that was happening.
I always pull out my thumb drive. That way my computer doesn't get pregnant.

mine used to be a bunch of kilos now going into 2mbps or up. sometimes 20 sometimes 10 sometimes 5 idk its crazy fast but crazy changing
I have 600MB - 1GB and still think it´s too slow sometimes.
IDK if anyone commented this but a good way to avoid static electrical damage is to always touch the outside of the metal case before you reach in! any built up electricity will discharge there instead of on a component.
20Mbps is low tier internet speed? Let me tell you something kid, back in my day...
corvettez06usa Im used to .5-2mbs, and so are a lot of people in the USA as the USA has shit internet prices.
I had DSL up until a few months ago. That shit was so slow. I'm talking speeds less than 1Mbps
Kids today. In ancient times when dinosaurs ruled the earth and phone use cable, we used something that was called dial up connections. Imagine the speed, staggering 56kb/s. Don't even mention the phone bill xD
At most you could get up to 64Kb/s! What stunning technology, it would take over a day to load 1 minute low resolution video for phones.

Noone deactivates it without knowing what he does.
And nothing can be in the write cache if write cache is disabled (doh ;) ).
i think a good one is how console peasants think you need to spend a bazillion dollars to get a decent gaming PC..
Sivert Heide we don't but. I like how pc gamers think console gamers are retarded and care that people prefer to use console over computers. Just worry about yourself
Sivert Heide well my friend has a $5000 gaming pc for no reason it's not much better than a $1000 one
Sivert Heide $750 and Overwatch runs in 75fps with all graphics on ultra
Elis yes you do. when i ask console gamers why they don't game on pc one of the first things i hear is that it is to pricey. would you mind explaining to me why people even game on a console because i'm curious as to why people even bother with an inferior system. the pc is a superior system in every way. we would spare a lot of time if console gamers just would realize that. you may think of me as an elitist, but i'm merely speaking the truth and it is your choice to see it or not.
name one reason why the consoles are better than pc. i double dare you.

I don't wanna start talking about the possibility of an device installation with the absence of internet, but these "obsolete" CDs are a must:
1) default Windows drivers might not support certain functionalities of the device where proprietary software enables them
2) it's a reliable source of getting the device working all times.
You listen to what he actually said.
Chris Grooms ahm , yes ^^ ! Otherwise I wouldn't have watched the video
He never mentioned printers, just things like monitors. No one in the last 10 years has needed a disk for monitors. Gaming keyboards, perhaps, but every day ones again, they are plug and play.
Joe, installation discs are great. if you do not have another computer to download drivers for your LAN connection, ur screwed
Lihaciu David yeah, that's what I do anyways
its really useful i wish i had my motherboard driver cd because when i reinstalled windows it wouldnt work so i had to go on another computer too download the mb and network driver... kinda nice to have
The Red Mammon *Well...* Windows comes with template drivers that you can use and some may work with your connection.
Tony Goozy I have Windows XP and it was SP2 and upgrading to SP3 required not the first disc.
Don't uninstall Java if you want to play Minecraft.
Multi2-4Gaming thanks
soo true... though i hear an upcoming version of MC is going to be Java free....
uh. Doesn't the Windows launcher download its own JVM instead of relying on the system installation anyway.
Java is much easier for modding
Yeah, the "uninstall java" part is basically bad advice.

This is only the case when you have services working with the data or a file system set to use caching.

Sometimes I just wonder how people use their computer...
#10 -- YES, I HAVE FRIED A COMPUTER WHEN OPENING IT -- *AND I **_WAS_** WEARING THE ANTI-STATIC WRIST-BAND*
since that incident, I don't bother.
Here's another myth: Deleting SYSTEM32 will speed up your system. It's a very common myth.
I deleted system32, my computer now runs a lot faster. I also have no problems with viruses.
Everyone knows that you shouldn't delete system32. The only reason you would ever want to modify the system32 folder would be to rename it to system64 to upgrade to a 64 bits system. But you don't really have to do that anymore, most system are sold already upgraded. Sometimes you have to pay extra though.
