I have not played this in years. I just purchased the game again because I could not locate my disc. However, no matter what, I still get caught. I even deleted all my logs with the best log deleted software from the jump with no luck. I got far my second go around.
I know this is an old video, but could you tell me what version you had, I have the US version I think (1.55), and it feels like the trace goes faster than in your videos. Thanks in advance !
That's not the case, physical distance means nothing...the more secure the server is, the harder it is to be traced, to simulate the legal trouble of convincing the server owners to give up their connection logs and the depth at which they'd have to dig to find them. Public access servers and public information servers like InterNIC are the fastest. After that, I think, are internal services machines, then government machines like the GCD, then central mainframes and LANs, and banks are the longest (because they don't like giving up their client's financial data and/or exposing their own dirty dealings, I guess). Having a valid account increases the time it takes, and having a valid admin password increases it even further. It's easy to get a valid account at banks, which means having a bank account at all banks, regardless of whether or not you plan to use it (you probably will eventually) and using the banks in your bounce path gives you quite a bit of breathing room. Prehacking a few systems before a hack that you know is going to be a righteous pain in the ass can also buy you a few more precious seconds here and there, because for a few hours after you hack a system, you have valid admin credentials on that system if all you did was connect to the system, break the admin key, and immediately disconnect. The other thing you can do to increase your trace times is just have a long-ass bounce path with a lot of servers between you and your target. I generally like to have InterNIC as my first hop, and have all of the "fast" systems on my bounce path right after it, followed by the longer systems after that. I use the "fast" systems as a security buffer, and the longer ones as my "working" path. If a trace ever gets to the point in my path where the fast systems are starting to get actively traced, it's time to quit, because that means I've already burned all of my working time and I'm now on emergency "GTFO" time.

mEw2Shadow Make sure that you're using a long bounce path that uses InterNIC as your first bounce and deleting your logs, at least at InterNIC, like I described in episode 1 of this series. There's two ways to get caught. The first is an active trace, where you stay connected to a system too long and they successfully trace your connection back to you. A trace tracker will tell you when they're close to you. The second is a passive trace, where they start at the last system they traced you to, look at the logs of that system to find where the connection came from, then go to that system and look at their logs, etc. If you don't delete those logs from at least one server, they'll trace it right back to you. InterNIC has the advantage of not giving a crap if you break into the secure section to delete the logs, which means that if you use it as your first hop, you can go in and delete the logs after every hack and break the chain back to you. Some traces run a lot faster than others....bank hacks are notorious for having ridiculously fast passive traces, as do some of the later storyline missions....but for an average hack you should have plenty of time to delete the logs if you use a long chain and are diligent about wiping them. Also, invest in the best log deleter as soon as you can. Logs deleted by it can't be recovered with a log undeleter. Lower levels of the log deleter can be uncovered if there's a reason to suspect tampering.

kris rider The eye is just a super creepy background that the game developers chose as one of the "Loading" screens. It freaks me out when I see it too. As far as being scared to download the game, don't be! The worst thing that can happen is that you get caught, you get a "Game over", and you start a new game, it happens to every one of us who plays it at some point or another. Advice? Be extremely OCD about cleaning logs at Internic after each hack. The faster, more thorough, and more frequently you clean up the logs, the better your chances are of not being caught doing what you're doing.
@@nightdagger This is about 5 years too late, but I'm leaving this here for anyone else that might find it useful: A good way to ensure that a game over is really more of an inconvenience than an actual end of your entire file is to make regular backups of your savegame. You can find it in "\users\YourName.dat(and .tmp) You can literally make another folder in the users folder called Backups and just backup your savegames to that folder to keep a complete history of any savegames you might start. Yeah it's a bit meta and is technically cheating, but it's a good way to quickly get back on your feet if you accidentally fuck up somewhere along the way.
Bank missions usually require you to connect to the bank specified, which you will have to find in InterNIC so you can connect, enter a certain account number into the account number field, and then use your password breaker to get into the account. After you're in, it could ask you for the account balance, the loan amount, or to find the target of a transfer...if it's the first two, you just hit reply and enter the amount in the email. If it's a "find the recipient" mission, you have to disconnect, wipe logs, connect to the target bank, hack the receiving account, and reply with the name of the recipient.

+PacIsle Yes, it's one of the more aggravating parts of the early game, but this is one of those times that the jump start you get helps to accelerate you and put you in a really good position to get to the better paying missions faster, and to be able to tackle the main story when it starts. Most players who try to rush ahead as fast as possible will do the money scumming trick for at least their first sets of missions.
@@nightdagger I've never found that a client who declines to give you more money will change their mind if you ask them again. Their first answer is final. The only time they'll give you more money is if you hacker level is above and beyond what the job requires, and even then they don't always agree. What I've found is a much better way to start an Uplink profile, is to accept as many low level jobs as you can (like, 15 of them), but before you accept, ask for half of the money up front. Most of them should agree. That way, before you even start hacking you've got a fairly sizeable amount of money to go and get decent software or computer upgrades with.
This is a game, of course. Real hacking doesn't have pretty graphics or fancy maps or click to run programs that break passwords in seconds...and it's either borderline or outright illegal so I wouldn't be putting it on YT if it was real, now would I?

Never mind, I just realized that the farther the bounce points are from each other, the harder it is to be traced.
