I have that book and was lucky enough to have him sign it for me when I bumped into him at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was there to drive the pace car.

Saw Yeager and Anderson fly P-51s at Oshkosh. They were both in their 70s. Incredible

I read his autobiography during Iraq 2005. One of the wisest things I read was how he knew the engine would fail, so he dove to the ground fast as possible so the remaining glide would be minimal. It's like a "runaway machine gun" that you point into a safe direction as you break off the ammo belt and let the gun fire empty. It was simple and total genius.

The greatest pilot of all time was without a doubt, R.A. "Bob" Hoover... They were friends, but Hoover was by far see as the pilot's pilot! Hoover was the only pilot in history to be considered "insurable in any aircraft" by Lloyds of London. The documentary made just before his death, "Flying the Feathered Edge" is an excellent tribute and available for rent or purchase on Amazon!

Liked the interview. Johny was a pilot himself, I think. Gen. Yeager had talked about the 'flying wing' of the rear horizontal control in other online clips. I once heard that he participated in the design of that --- they had taken the Bell up to try it out at slower speeds and Yeager found that his controls would start to freeze up as he flue faster and faster --- very unsafe --- and he then had a 'heart to heart' conversation with the civilian engineers that designed that first aircraft. The upshot being that Yeager took a hacksaw and sawed off the non moving portion of that horizonal control set. Greased it up with some WD40, worked fine after that. Innovation at its most practical. If true, I wonder if the General got a patent for that?
