Yesterday in the Congo, I hiked Mt. Nyiragongo -- Africa's most active and dangerous volcano. After a 6 hour journey up to 3,500 meters, we slept overnight at the stunning crater, and admired the world's largest lava lake.
It was, without question, one of the best travel days of my life.
But this story is not so much about the volcano itself. It's about a guy named Elias, who since 1991, has been a porter and chef to cater for tourists who want to hike to the top.
I was randomly paired up with him, and was so astonished by how he carries up to 55 pounds of things with him up and down this volcano, three times a week. For the last 29 years. And he makes roughly $4 a day.
Elias deserves every bit of credit for his determination and hard work. It's people like him who make the world go 'round.

Elias is the real definition of strength, adaptability, patience and selflessness.

@drewbinksy Can you please clarify? You spent two days with him but he doesn’t carry any food for himself.
So he doesn’t eat after hiking for 6 hours while carrying up to 25kg on his back and throughout the remainder of your 48 hours with him.
Their are many porters with him carrying food and equipment u to supply camps ect, thats why they carry 25 kilograms of gear basically sharing out the load

@@jamessitati7396 if we didn't have an economic system that forced people to risk their lives on the daily carrying dozens of kilograms of gear up mountains, wouldn't be an issue. Anyway, I take issue with Drew's mindset around, not the simple act of it.
@@jamessheerin121 I still don't get what you are trying to say but what I can tell you as an African is that this porters need this jobs just the same way porters carry bags for hikers in the Himalayas, it may only be 4 dollars but that is almost four times the average daily pay, the more people like Drew Binsky visit the better the porters pay will get and knowing Drew after watching him for a long time he definitely tipped the guy and importantly marketed him for free.
Him: **climbs an entire volcano but only makes $4 a day**
