I just got my 2 puppies and they are 8 weeks. I like the stress free tail docking method. What is the difference in ligature placement with puppies that older? How far down the tail is best? Can I request that the vet do it this way?
They didn't even miss a beat nursing. Definitely stress-free for them and the mom not separating her from her pups. And with the way things are now you don't want to be taking them into a vet's office anyway too many contaminants.

I own The Dog Breeder Store so will pop in and see if I can help. Try doubling them over the elastrator prongs like you would double a rubber band around a pony tail. That's how we band really tiny tails. We actually recommend a slightly larger band that you can double over, thus resulting in a smaller diameter. Then they don't slip.

So we banded our 2 day old puppies tails yesterday. I think momma was messing with one of the bands and it fell off. I had my wife replace a band exactly where the other one was and the skin on the end of the tail fell off. It doesn't seem like dead tissue yet. I told her to keep it clean with iodine and check it often. Should I just go ahead and cut it off? I'm worried about infection. thanks for any advice

You should be fine, although after 3 days the cartiledge turns to bone....you MAY need to snip the end with , of all things, wire snips to cut any potruding bone....I had to once...when I totally zoned out which day they were on....FP....banded anyways and did have to snip a tip of bone....but nothing serious...
Those will work. it's the same size I use. They don't need a lot of force, too much or too big a band can cause it to roll off before the job is finished. Make sure you band at 3 days or less. If you go more than three days, you may need to use side cutters to trim bone that may stick out after a week or so....it doesn't hurt them.
Tera, I own The Dog Breeder Store where she got her Docking Kit, so I'll jump in and respond. You need to band them before they are five days old. After that, even a vet won't shear dock them because their nervous system is too well developed.

I just banded the tails of my 3 day old blue heeler pups and the larger puppies are whining. It’s super uncomfortable when I touch their tail, it obviously hurts them. I got the 1/8” elastics from your link, and my pups are smaller than yours. It’s killing me To hear them cry! Any thoughts? I’m thinking I’ll wait an hour and check on them. It’s only been 30 minutes
Its uncomfortable at best for the animals, another video I watch is doing this to male goat as a form of neutering and they all scream but hours or minutes later depending on the goat they forget about it. Likes it's not even there.
Hey Amanda, It could be, just a possibility(I've only experience with corso) that Corso have an extremely high pain tolerance. The pups should be fine...they just may feel it at first, but once the blood supply is stopped, the end dries up quickly and falls away, along with the nerve endings.

No. Dewclaws serve important functions for a dog, in running, stopping, turning activity as well as, raw fed dogs use them to hold their food as the rip and tear. They are like thumbs for us.....

My dog has happy tail, and when I took her to the vet, they said that the very tip of the tail seems to be dead already with no blood flow. So they recommend to cut it off. But I am wondering if I just let it naturally fall off, would that be ok? Granted I’m treating any open wounds properly and not letting her lick it
Seems to me if a person didn't mind a short crop then it could be done at this time too, before nerve endings have taken place and it would be much easier (no anesthesia, no stitches, etc)

8 weeks is too old for banding. We do it at no more than 3 days before the cartridge becomes bone.

I only do tails. Ears must be done by a licensed vet. it's illegal to do them yourself.

I got 1/8" ortho bands but mine are 6.5OZ and 4.5OZ does this matter? For cane corso tails?

My dog has happy tail, and when I took her to the vet, they said that the very tip of the tail seems to be dead already with no blood flow. So they recommend to cut it off. But I am wondering if I just let it naturally fall off, would that be ok? Granted I’m treating any open wounds properly and not letting her lick it
I would probably do what the vet thinks, actually, allowing the dog to lick a wound, a natural instinct, keeps it clean and infection free.

yes....needs to be done no later than 3 days. the vet will have to amputate at 13 days....

Seems to me if a person didn't mind a short crop then it could be done at this time too, before nerve endings have taken place and it would be much easier (no anesthesia, no stitches, etc)
May I ask why you're using the instrument, can you just put it on with your hands and gloves?
The pliers pull the band out enough to get it on the tail, otherwise it would be a struggle.
