About the life-work balance - I've learned that other people are different and what makes them happy is different. I think a lot of creatives don't work so hard only for money, but out of passion for what we do. And some people are more happy when they are creating then when they are with friends. Everyone is different. Do what works for you.

Flux I agree that sometimes the long hours come from passion (not money) and that time spent can bring a lot of joy. What Dann is really saying is to remember that you have people around you (friends and family) that care about you and want to spend time with you. We all need to make time for that. It recharges us, gives us fresh perspectives and will ultimately help us do better work. That recharge time will look different for everyone but we need it, our bodies were not meant to hustle 24/7.
Before I had kids I could work long hours in chunks and then take off time in chunks. Now its more important to be be there for them mornings/evenings/weekends/etc so I have to be strategic about how I work, but its easy for me to want to sacrifice some of that time to get a little more done/make more $....with the thought that ill make it up later, but that day usually never comes around and its not what my family remembers.
This is pure honesty, thanks for opening your heart and tell the truth. At the end of the day, life is the most precious part in the world.

Good message! I'm so over the glorification of 'busy'. When I hear people bragging about how they never sleep, never take time off to see friends or heck even just sit on the sofa and watch a tv show, I'm not impressed anymore. Instead I just feel worried for them!

Damn.. I needed to hear this... it’s hell week for me. Overworked. Tired. Long days juggling all this work I have happening all at once.
Heck yeah Dann. First, congrats on the new baby! I can only imagine how stoked you and your wife are! What you've shared here is SO important. It's critical to leading a stable and healthy life to not overwork oneself. Which is even more challenging to say in this age of the #hustle. Personally, despite loving what I get to do as a designer and loving the people I get to work with, I also want to nurture those relationships and friendships outside of our office, away from our desks and out in the real world. I'm about to get married myself here in just over a month and my focus is also very much on my fiancé and the life we are creating together. We're both blessed to be in stable careers that we love, but we cherish every moment we have together.
To circle back to the topic at hand: I do agree that everyone is different, and there are most definitely those that need to just be working all the time, but from what I gather, you and I have very similar mindsets. As long as we're all happy with what we're doing and not feeling like our work is a "chore" then it's all good!

Thank you for this reminder, this is going to be one of those videos I have to play every few weeks. Its often hard to balance these things and its easy to get caught up in the "if I only work a few more hours / cram this project in over the weekend / when I make X...then I can enjoy family and friends more".

although i love my job and that, must admit, this is actually a good point!
Dann...I repeat for me the same over and over , but after 20 minutes "pufff" , as if never heard it. Week by week with the message in my conscience "there will be time to do other things, now I need to continue work as much I can" but the time is now after see this video :).
I don't know if I should thank you or damn you, cuz the next Monday I have to delivery a project, and because of this video now I don't work this weekend for sure hahahahaahahah...

You're right Dann, a lot of us are overworked, and I think for most of us it's our own fault. I'm guilty of this. I happily work ~60 hour weeks. While I do enjoy it, and it does make me happy, I still feel the fatigue building up. I haven't taken a vacation in over three years, partly because I can't imagine doing it. I've thought about where I'd go, gotten close to purchasing tickets... and then I just kinda back out and open up Sketch again.
I think my work addiction is largely related to my computer addiction. If I'm not working, I'm probably still online. You don't seem to have this problem because you do a lot of cool stuff in your free time. Have you ever dealt with computer/online addiction? How'd you get past it?
Jared Lodwick I used to love work and design literally more than anything. Then something just changed and I was just like fuck this. I'm not sitting in this office my entire life. When you think about how big the world is and you just sit in one spot for 90% of your life and stare at a screen it's kinda sickening. I backed off on design and started exploring other career options like marketing, social media, business, etc. I used to think design was the most important thing but quickly learned a ton and realized design is hardly anything. I've made a lot less money but I'm only a couple years into trying other things when I had been just doing design for so long. I think in 3-5 years I will have learned enough and my income and happiness will be much much higher than when I just worked as a designer.

Dann, I have 5 kids, we need money to pay for rent and food and all the fun stuff also (Fun stuff takes money too). Once they are older.. you still need to provide for them. I'd love to go away camping every week and hang out in parks all day long and shoot hoops with my boys. But you need to work to live.. and yes.. don't live to work. You're 100% right. What do you have in mind? How do you propose we get out and enjoy all the little things in life? (please don't say camper van)

Dann, how? I got clients. I got bills. I got to do three websites and a logo same time because one is not enough for paying bills. How to become actually FREElancer? I work much more than my fellow designers in studios. I pursuit freedom for 5 years now but it looks like I add one hour to my work time every year.
