I can't say enough good about Ben Sollee. He sets the curve very high not only for musicianship but also for being a tremendously decent human being. He blows past the "shoulds" and the "ought to's" and just does.
Just saw him in concert with my brother and grandmother. We went without any prior knowledge about what we were going to hear or who he was. It blew my mind, it was so amazing. He played with a beautiful string quartet, and the last piece they played was breathtaking...
That, for me, is the best way to experience new music. Live without any knowledge of what's about to happen. Just let it happen & take it all in. At this point tho I've seen Ben more than a dozen times. He's a good dude. And a wonderful songwriter & musician.
I play cello and have always dreamt of doing something singing with it. I always sort of thought that I was the only one who had that idea. Now I know I'm not and that it's possible to do. This is SO INSPIRING. Makes me want to pick up my cello and start writing something! This guy has SO much talent!
This video speaks volumes. Art is so often silenced. It bleeds and breeds in the background. Only when it is showcased is it recognized. Sad truth. Art is seen by those who see it.
I voted. Eearly in North Carolina, October 22nd. Tough year for decisions. But we ALL Need to VOTE. Thanks for your beautiful music, message & inspiration for old & young.
Ben -- Thank you for your great music and your care for our country. I can't wait to see you this Friday in Portland, OR!!! Everyone please vote -- and please, vote for FREEDOM FIRST.
Having lived in Washington and seen how finicky law enforcement are there, then listening to that song, I feel honored to have met Ben and seen him live on numerous occasions in good 'ol Kentucky. Never stop Ben.
Thank you, young man. I hope you noticed the little girl you were inspiring in the background. Also, it was nice to view the courteous exchange between you and the park ranger/law enforcement. That's what America is supposed to be like--the spirit of compromise. I wish you the best in your career.
As always an incredible performance Ben. Looking forward to seeing you perform again. I sincerely hope that people hear the message that you are sending and take it heart. Well done!
You move me, Ben! I will be seeing you soon (May 20, 2013 at the Brown Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky when you will be playing with friends and Nawang Khechog for the Tibetan Freedom Concert and again on June 15, 2013 at Musicians Corner - Free Concert in Nashville).
The irony of the song he chose, his excellent performance of it, and the reaction by the authorities is crushing. Congratulations! I think he proved The exact point he was attempting to prove.
Wish I'd known you were there, Ben! I just returned from Kentucky the day before and would have loved to hear this in person. Nice video work on this, too.
You are correct. It's the land of greed. But in theory what he is saying we can walk free. Talk free. A few honest words out of any politician would be like traveling to the sun and surviving. It's merely a concept at this time. But maybe a concept worth saying.

With all the turmoil the last few years I didn’t realize this was 9 years ago because it’s so fitting.
I am so happy that my husband found Mr. Sollee via the soundtrack of " The Killing Season" Mr. Sollee is such a great musician.
What a beautiful song! Thanks for making the trek to the Lincoln Memorial and expressing such an important and resonant viewpoint.

The relevance and somber urgency in Ben's song is more vital today, than even before. #turnoutthevote #voteblue2020

The 4:41 that I spent listening to this song are some of the most free moments of my life I have spent.
As always an incredible performance Ben. Looking forward to seeing you perform again. I sincerely hope that people hear the message that you are sending and take it heart. Well done!

What a guy, total mancrush!
Uncle Samuel..... has disowned us Ben...lol
How about the couple at 1:50 pretending to be happier than they are for the photo (we're all guilty of this, I know) :)
!!
Ben....Didn't you get the feeling that you were surrounded by people with the brains of a SKELETON?
When the pigs try to get at you... politely relocate to avoid un-needed confrontation.
This is really nice! What exact instrument is he playing?
it's a cello
Nice....Damn 5-0 have no appreciation of good music, closest they get to an emotive tune is the painful sound of a siren!
That is a cello.
