    Hey, did you acutally installed it? Sorry, my incompetence, can this compressor work as a replacement in a regualar domestic fridge/freezer? I have a tiny fridge it's currently 220v, but I want to run it in my van off 12v. Do you think I can just replace current copressor with this?

      I have not actually used it yet, but I have turned it on and it works great. As long as your system is small enough and uses a compatible refrigerant and you swap it in carefully (recover, install, pump down the system, fill, start), it should work.

      It is designed for normal R134A system pressures, of course at very low mass flow rates compared to a normal sized compressor. .

      They use R134a so its probably tied to the ideals for the refrigerant. Probably check an automotive book for AC diagnosis and you'll find the answer.

      Probably less than that. Also, its COP, according to the data sheets on Ebay and not the advertisement pictures, is 1.7. That's really bad. These compressors really only exist for organ transport or something else where efficiency isn't very important.

    I wish I didn't have 608 certification since I can't play with stuff like this legally without getting a huge fine if I'm not using RRR machines. I wonder what limits the size since we need something to combat the plague of Peltier-Seebeck-based dehumidifiers, micro fridges, etc.

    • @bigjoshlevine
      @bigjoshlevine  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also have 608 cert... but when I play with stuff like this I just use Dust Off as the working fluid. The bottles contain R152a, but since it is not sold as a "refrigerant" you are allowed (in fact, encouraged!) to release it to the atmosphere.

    • @ryelor123
      @ryelor123 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bigjoshlevine Its a nice pump but I don't think it would last very long if it was cooling anything bigger than a well-insulated cooler. I think those compressors are meant for stuff like organ transplant coolers. That's why they run on DC and can tolerate a 30-degree tipping angle. Any comfort application I can think of would just be dangerous since the insulation you'd need would be make a leak deadly(like for a small enclosed car or bike helmet).
      You know what? Why don't you turn it into a desktop portable air conditioner. The ductwork has been standardized so it would be relatively easy to build and it would be pretty useful to have an AC unit that performs the role of a desk fan better than, well, a desk fan. Aftermarket automotive evaporators are dirt cheap. I always wanted ultra tiny refrigeration compressors to become a thing to get rid of the scourge of worthless Peltier-Seebeck gadgets. I guess efficiency falls with size since the data sheet said a COP of 1.7 on Ebay. Anyway, have fun with your project. It would be neat if you could design something that others could build.

    Will it be useful for PC cooling?

    • @bigjoshlevine
      @bigjoshlevine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you need it to be small, then this is the compressor for you! You could run refrigerant down to the CPU block rather than water, which should be more efficient and colder.

    • @ryelor123
      @ryelor123 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bigjoshlevine Probably better to just use a heat exchanger and cool down the coolant water. But even then, you'll burn up the compressor pretty quickly since it'll be running continuously. Cheaper, easier, and better to just use a modified minifridge for that purpose. Another thing you have to keep in mind is that if you cool the processor down too much, you'll end up getting condensation on the board. I'm surprised no one has built a computer liquid cooler that has a slot to place ice packs for temporary performance improvement.

    • @jasonbay13
      @jasonbay13 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ryelor123 the compressor is variable speed and brushless so its quite efficient. just keep the head temp under 200f and it should be plenty good for a long time.
      but i've been looking into these things. the motor itself is $60 on ebay but aliexpress seems to have them no cheaper than triple and as much as 6x as much for the same thing. idk why

    Can i some how build this kind of Small AC Compressor which uses 12V ?? I need it for a project can someone guide me how i can make this small compressor it would be really helpful for me.

    • @ryelor123
      @ryelor123 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't help you with that but I can steer you in the right direction. You'll want to make sure you've got gauges on whatever you build so you can tell if the pressures on one side or the other are too high. I'd recommend you buy a cheap Walmart mini fridge to play with. Taps can be installed and if it uses R134a, you can bring it to an automotive mechanic and they can remove the refrigerant legally. Play with some copper wire(remember to anneal it a lot so it doesn't crack) and make sure to use leaded solder since lead free is junk. Record the amount of refrigerant removed which is easy since mechanics' RRR machines record it and you can probably find that info online easily. Figure out the volume of the evaporator line so that you can keep that the same when you finish your project so that the recharge can be the same. Make sure to put the system under a vacuum and hold it there to check for leaks. Never ever use stopleak refrigerant because that stuff ruins RRR machines and mechanics won't help you. Fix leaks the proper way.
      Look into the two main types of refrigeration cycles - expansion valve and orifice tube - and pick the method you prefer. Expansion valve is fancier but it can vary the amount of cooling whereas orifice tube style is either on or off. Also, orifice tube style has the evaporator filled with refrigerant and the cooling happens at the end of it while expansion valve has the evaporator full of refrigerant gas.
      The best advice I can give you is to buy a used RRR machine. You can play around all you want because you can recharge and purge your refrigeration circuit easily and you can monitor the pressure levels on both sides of the compressor. A used one can be pretty cheap and if you want to use propane instead, you can get an old R12 machine and use R12 fittings.

      No, its for a cooler. Usually the kind used to transport organs. Mini fridges use much larger compressors. You have to keep in mind that a good refrigeration system is one that's more powerful than it theoretically needs to be. That way it doesn't wear out quickly.
