    *Adds to long list of dream cages* This is an absolutely gorgeous cage Mr BB did a fantastic job! It was nice to see that footage of Scarlet too she was such a pretty hamster and I bet she loved her new home for the time she was in it :)

      The bedding you used at the end isn't good for hamsters

      @@gameplaynate7314 Looks like aspen to me, which is perfectly safe. If it was pine, then yes, but I figure someone building a custom cage for their hammy knows what's safe and what isn't.

    We're did you find Mr bb I need to find someone like him! True love is when they make giant hamster cages for you xD this cage is honestly HUGE! Lucky little hamster!

      This is actually an ideal cage size for a hamster. Unfortunately, pet stores like to sell cages labeled for hamsters that are far too small for virtually any small animal. I once saw one approximately the size of a large mixing bowl...this doesn't even allow for a wheel in the cage, which is a necessity, muchless any toys or tubes.
      But anyways, I'm kind of rambling here, haha :)

    Woah! I wish hamster tanks like these were easier to find on the market.... No way I could make something like this!

    Your hamsters so sweet and obviously very lucky to have you! It’s so nice seeing happy hammy when most are kept in tiny pet store cages that you can hardly fit a wheel in 😩 love your channel 💕💕💕

    What a beautiful cage, Mr Bb sure put a lot of work into it! I'm so sorry for your loss but Scarlet spent her last days in an amazing home, and was clearly pampered. x

      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Not that her old home was lacking haha but I am so happy that she got the home I always wanted for her and got to enjoy it before she passed! And Aurora, our newest addition, seems to really be loving it as well! :)

    I'm so sorry for your loss - Scarlet looked so happy in her new beautiful big home! I lost my three over the summer they were siblings they each died between (2.2-2.5 yrs old) of each other - not fair that their lifespans are so short but it is what it is and we just have to make the most of each day... There are so many that need rescuing be they will never have wonderful owners like us! This cage is big enough to to make into two cages if you decide to get dwarfs! Or rescue 2 or more from shady pet stores or from owners who don't want them anymore! Thanks for this great idea - will see if my hubby can build something like this for ours! I just got another rescue hammy that had only one eye (either fighting be pet store had him caged with another) or birth defect and no one wanted him - Whom I've affectionately named Mr. Magoo! 💕

    This is an incredible cage and incredible video documenting the building process! I am just so impressed with Mr. Bb's building skills; he is like a pro! It turned out beautifully and I've been looking forward to watching this video for a long time. Thank you for uploading it! :) The music was cute and catchy. It's such a blessing that Scarlet had a chance to enjoy it for a bit before going to the rainbow bridge. Now Aurora can enjoy it as well as any future hammies.

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Thank you so much HH! :) I am very lucky to have a very handy Mr. Bb! He keeps my home and the pet's homes looking so snazzy heehee! I am very thankful that Scarlet got to enjoy her palace for the last month of her life, not that her old accommodations weren't suitable but I know she loved all of the extra space this enclosure gave her! Aurora seems to love it as well and she makes full use of all of the space the cage has to offer! x

    Cool cage although it should have more ventilation. Holes over the entire top or a mesh wire would be better.

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Having 18 2" holes with mesh provides plenty of ventilation. ☺️ If you look at something like the Ovo all it has is a few tiny holes drilled in to it and it still provides enough air. I would absolutely not recommend that type of cage for any animal but as far as ventilation goes just gives you an example. We have now been using this cage for 2 1/2 years with no issues.

    Mr BB is becoming quite the DIY celebrity! Haha. Maybe you should patent your hammy cage and sell it as an idea or Mr BB could make a few and ship them out to people! :D Such a great design, although in my personal experience Syrians don't fit too well down the small plastic tubes. I guess it depends where you get your hamster from. Show-type hamsters from breeders tend to be a lot bigger than pet shop hammies. Strange how there's such a difference! xx

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha many people have told Mr. Bb that but with the cost of shipping that sucker and the time that goes in to each one there's no way people would pay for it! Hopefully though it will give some people a creative idea to better their hammie's lives! I notice that UK hammies seem to be massive lol compared to other country's hamsters. I think Erin had even mentioned this when she got Einstein (who is our typically sized hammy here). Aurora is my 5th Syrian and even with pouches stuffed full all of my hamsters have comfortably fit through the Habitrail/Crittertrail tubes!

    wow, we really loved this habitat, I can't even call it a cage because it's so much more. My husband has agreed to replicate it, maybe amend it a bit, he's an engineer so I guess he will be taking liberties. We are so excited, in a few weeks we will have our own hamster. I use we liberally, the hamster is really for me, if the kids play their cards right I may let them snuggle it too. We have been wanting a pet for a long time, but my youngest is to small for a dog, and our lifestyle currently would be unfair to a dog, we are gone most of the day sometimes. But after seeing how affectionate some of the hamsters are, with proper training and love. .it's like having the tiniest little fluffy lover ever. It's been a long debate, but we have decided. I'm having sooooo much fun trying to figure out how to theme its cage. a garden theme seems appropriate to nature, but the fluffy bedding and colorful themes seem fun too. I wonder if the hamsters have a preference.

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestion! The nice thing about melamine is that it's coated so it already has a naturally water resistant barrier. I also make sure there is lots of bedding for burrowing and to also keep urine and water droplets from bottles away from the bottom of the cage. x

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL! I am not handy at all! I have the ideas but my husband is the one that has to do all of the work! :P Honestly the detolf itself would be cheaper then building this cage and makes for a great hammy cage!

  • @NoirHammer
    @NoirHammer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Be careful because the height from floor to ceiling is pretty high which means it'll take longer for your cage to cool and give proper ventilation. Put a thermometer used for lizards and snakes in there to get a temperature reading just to play it safe. If it's not, then I'd make a big square on both sides and cover it with wire mesh.
    Aside from that, great job. I can see a lot of effort went into it.

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NoirHammer Thank you, we truly love our pets and only want what's best for them! As for the thermometer - great idea - I actually have a digital thermometer so was curious and checked this out finding no variation between the top and bottom of cage. We keep our thermostat at the same temperature year round and hamsters should be kept in an area with no direct sunlight so there really is no reason for the cage to become overly hot or cold at any time. :)

    Around how much money did it cost you to make this?

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ella P. To make it from scratch it would cost around $150. It wasn't cheap but to purchase an Ikea detolf and Kallax storage unit for it to sit on (a popular option for hamster owners and something I was looking in to) would cost around the same amount. For us we actually had that piece of plexiglass left over from building our guinea pig cage so it cut the cost significantly and made use of the plexi.

    Do the cage have to be white, or can it be black? I want a black cage, but i want it to be as safe for the hamster as possible☺️ If it’s unsafe with black paint, i would go for a white cage. Or is it the same?

      ***** melomine wood is water resistant

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HashHire Hi there, melamine (which is what we used on the majority of this cage) is coated making it easily wipeable. It can get damp or wet (for short periods of time) with no damage. In the corners of the cage we used aquarium sealant which sealed off any unfinished edges from dampness. Of course with hamsters you are going to use at least a few layers of bedding so the chances are that water bottle drips and urine will never make it to the cage base anyways.

    Hey :) that size of cage made me faint xD i thought the ikea detolf was huge. But look at this one :o when i saw it i was in awe please tell me how much it costs because i want to make one myself ;) i think i need to borrow mr. BB for one day!!! Anyway your hams are soo lucky they are in 7th heaven in your house :*

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jessica's osm msp Hahaha Mr. Bb says he is not for hire unfortunately! ;) It cost us around $100 but we already had the piece of plexiglass left over from building the guinea pig cage otherwise it would have been more. Also this is smaller then the detolf but for us it made more sense. The detolf makes for a great hamster cage but I would also want the shelving unit so both would limit where I could put it in the house and would end up costing me more then this DIY cage. :)

    • @jessrecords5089
      @jessrecords5089 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that would make sense :) this cage is just fabulous :D the detolf needs a sheliving or space to put it on, while this one you can just put it on the floor without worrying will the hamster get out/eaten. Anyways nice to know that scarlett enjoyed it just as much as we did ;) i just lovw your videos

    Just wondering, why were there two water bottles? I'm very interested :)

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just easy to access depending on where she is in the cage or if one malfunctions and leaks etc. Our current hamster is now 2+ years old and mobility has become an issue so I'm especially grateful I put a water bottle at both ends so I know she can easily get a drink if she needs it.

      There are 18 holes around 2" each so provides plenty of ventilation. :)

  • @thumpurebunny63
    @thumpurebunny63 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you made this way bigger, could you use it for an overnight rabbit cage?

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A rabbit cage shouldn't be smaller than 2ft wide by 6 ft long. It also needs to be tall enough that they can stand up on their hind legs. Rabbits are much larger so they need more ventilation then this cage provides plus they are major chewers and would easily eat through the melamine. I definitely wouldn't recommend any 'tank style' habitat for a Guinea pig or rabbit. x
