If we only knew back then that the world would change forever mere months after the final. This was probably the last proper world cup we will see in a long time.
Strange looking back now seeing how pessimistic people were around the end of 2021, I was the same at the time. We got out on the other end relatively okay, luckily, and I’d reckon it’s all fairly back to normal now.
There may be 20 teams competing but realistically the 8 teams who will make the Q/F and beyond can be pencilled in now. While typically it would be 5 out of the 6 European teams from the Six Nations and 3 out of the 4 from the Rugby Championship that won't quite be the case this year with Scotland, Ireland and South Africa all in the same pool, meaning only 2 out of those 3 will advance to the knock-outs. But still, 10 out of the 20 countries come from the Six Nations/TRC grouping where the winner will emerge from. Globally, the RWC is still very much a Euro- and Pacific-centric tournament (14 out of the 20 teams come from those regional groupings) - hardly a 'world' cup. Perhaps a 'conference' type qualification with guaranteed numbers of teams from certain regions might enhance the global appeal, though i suspect cricket scores might negate the appeal somewhat if less-traditional rugby nations were to advance to the global showpiece.
I think the two best rugby world cups was 1995 and 2019 world cup thank you Japan for being fantastic hosts.
