Can This Historic Sea Fishing Venue Still Deliver?

  • The days of huge cod are long gone here at Dungeness... Or are they with early signs showing codling being caught at night i try a day time trip to see if i can capture some of the History of the Mighty Dungeness estate.
Sea fishing can be cyclic and there is always a chance better fishing is around the corner.
Dungeness is a headland formed of shifting shingle as it juts out in to the Channel. With deep water nearby its something of a pilgrimage to fish here.
For me its a fantastic place to film and fish with an impressive backdrop of working boats , rickety sheds and even its own mini steam train!

Remember coming down in the 50s with dad and the fishermen carrying the cod of the beach hanging on poles.Used to get really big channel whiting as well, happy days bait used to freeze up,ice forming on the line but great memories looking back.

I remember fishing near there with my uncle, he got a birdie and only went out about 25metres, 5 minutes later reels in a 6lb cod. That section is usually very good Bass spot on the flood, can be tough fishing, sometimes need a fixed grip nose wire weight to combat weed and tide and casting out upside. Thanks for the video very well done.

Used to fish there in the 70’s as a teenager, was not very good at casting, the cod were 100+ yards out, caught a few but mostly dabs and the odd bass by the power station outlet. Boat fishing there was another story altogether. Captain Ginger Gary used to put us on big cod wrecks, using muppets and perks in the summer and up tiding in the winter, never had a blank and often dozen or more big cod to 30 LBS, double figure bass, turbot and tope, sole and place.

I horrified how the fishing there has deteriorated so drastically over the years, especially as you said that you'd done well! The last time I fished there would have been at the end of the 1950s, back then you'd have caught dozens of double figured cod, even better later on in the season. My local fishmonger or chippy always bought my surplus fish so that covered my costs. Sorry about the rod, if you're broken others your casting is definitely at fault, you're probably putting too much force in initially rather than building the power up. I've never seen anyone break a rod like that. It's an easy repair though, if the rod is hollow then just slide the broken end in from the thick end and epoxy it in place. It wont affect the rods performance at all. If it's a solid tip then either use it shorter or replace the whole top. Really love the videos they bring back so many happy memories. After the 1950s I gave up fishing for a while, in the 1960s I found other things to do!!

Don't remember how many times I been there this year. The fish hut always got the best bait around Kent. Last time porpoises were all around me and I capsized my kayak when one of them popped up next to me. I have lost two rods, so went to shore picked up surf rods. As soon as I made the first cast a seal swim by few feet from us parallel to the beach and he was looking at us with a face like "You ain't gonna catch anything today" 😂. It was like a zoo.
