Day 1 was like watching a semi truck heading towards a VW beatle at 200mph. Everyone was totally expecting a massacre. I know I was. I was only curious how the west would respond to the total conquest/annihilation of Ukraine.
But then it was like when the truck hit the beatle, it just flips right over it, lands upside down, and skids across the pavement until a spark ignites the gas tank and the truck bursts into flames.
It's pleasantly surprising... but makes me worried that this is some kind of trick. But how? Why would Putin so spectacularly burn his own army and economy?

Your average garden snail moves at about 0.048 km/h.
Since day 1 of the invasion, about 3800 hours have passed (Aug 1, 2022).

Just like in China, no one wants to report bad news, at the risk of being blamed for it and being punished. So everyone with any kind of responsibility will be sure to sugarcoat, conceal, disguise, and masquerade the bad, at the same time taking any kind of positive information, making sure to enhance and magnify while taking credit for it all.
This seems to be a common theme for Russia for the past 100 years. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904 was a massively humiliating defeat for Russia. Then Stalin made the terrible decision to invade Finland before doing the required preparation and due diligence. After an embarrassing loss, Stalin shifts all of the blame to the military officers. He kept doing that throughout WW2. Then the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, without solid thorough preparation of their opponent. Again in Chechnya and Georgia, and now Ukraine. Entering a conflict without the proper preparation, often resulting in embarrassing and devastating losses and defeats.

I talked to someone whom I have been able to tell the most offensive, over the top jokes with for five years now. Someone I have had a lot of polite disagreements with over the years even on hot button topics.
I said "Imagine hating Russia for their stance on gay rights and unsubtle white nationalist overtones, volunteering to help the Ukrainians fight them, and getting saddled up with the Azov Battalion."
They legit didn't know who that was. I explained. I must have said 'allegedly' like 27 times because I am not going to believe what the western media, Ukraine or Russia has to say on the matter and that filtering fact and propaganda is probably impossible.
"Because a country with a Jewish president would be in league with neo-nazis."
Explained that when your back is against the wall you aren't picky about who you ally with, I have no horse in this race.
Was politely informed by discord that that message didn't go through because they don't receive messages from people not on their friends list.

Capture airport close to the capital, fly in troops, kidnap the goverment, force regime change. This was their plan (in 1968 they did no missile strikes, because they were allies of Czechoslovakia so it was a backstab). Its amazing how a country that prouds itself on its super duper KGB spy school failed so miserably to gain the simple intel of "Ukraine will fight" and "You willl not get into Kyijiv city center within the first week of the invasion".

As a former War Thunder player, I have some suggestions for the top-tier Soviet tank tree to simulate realism.
    When playing Tier VI-VII Soviets:
    - Random chance to run out of gas
    - Random chance to break down
    - Random chance the crew will abandon the tank
    - The battle map is disabled or displays an obsolete version.
    - Radio comms from other players are disabled, while your comms are broadcast to everyone.
    - Due to there being much less quantity than advertised, T-80/T-90 players may randomly spawn in T-72s
    - If a player from Ukraine spawns in the match, there's a random chance your tank/helicopter/jet will explode
    - If you drive off the map, your tank gets towed away by a Gypsy in a tractor.

He wants the warm water port of Crimea and he needs land that supplies Crimea with easy access to food, water, power, etc. Throw in the fact Ukraine found gas and oil fields and was getting ready to compete with Russia for energy supplies to Europe AFTER Russia worked with Germany to build a gas pipeline that avoided Ukraine (don't want to pay those pesky "right to self-rule" royalties on Russian gas) entirely. As hard as it's been for me to realize this because we've been so propagandized to, if you hold onto your principles and understand the laws of war then invasion for the purposes of self defense is legal and morally acceptable. Ukraine is a corrupt puppet state and this whole adventure is squarely on the US government, it's corrupt and has to do with Biden getting a big payout if Ukraine joins the EU and all those stolen resources find investment and labor to extract it, beyond that there's a huge need to distract from his abyssmal failures at home and so many interests aligned with pushing for war, the MiC and corrupt elites that have their own vested interests. The great reset being one, rations on fuel meat and power, higher taxes and more wealth transfer to the top in order to create neo-feudalism, elites that own everything and then you toiling away every day for scraps. If you thought the Cuban Missile crisis was a lunatic step towards nuclear armageddon when Khruschev tried it and then capitulated to Kennedy then you better believe that the US shoulders the same blame and more because they did not back down like the USSR did in the fifties. During the Cold War it was pretty common for the Pentagon to massively talk up Soviet capabilities because it justified their own calls for more money and cutting edge weaponry like the ridiculous SDI boondoggle. The CIA meanwhile tended to be much more accurate and realistic, pointing out that many of these supposed new weapons were actually just research projects or that the vast numbers of aircraft/tanks/missiles that the Soviets had supposedly deployed didn't exist and the real numbers were a fraction of that. It was the same in the USSR where elements of the military and weapons manufacturers pushed for greater spending on new toys to counter threats from America that weren't real. When Soviet rocket scientists appraised the Space Shuttle they were baffled that it even existed because it didn't make sense - never coming close to achieving its design goals and costing far too much for what it could actually do. Meanwhile the military and associated industry were pushing the narrative that it was a weapon, either for delivering a nuclear first strike without warning, or as a way of capturing Soviet satellites. The Soviet leadership bought the lies and committed to vast spending to counter a non-existent threat in part because of this fear mongering but also because they gave they Americans too much credit and couldn't believe that they'd have spent so much on a program that couldn't even replace what they already had, which could only mean it had some other secret capability.

I was following the work of some pretty well-recognized experts in the field (whom I won't name but I suspect you'd recognize them) in the run-up to this renewed invasion, and as you know they have been proven devastatingly wrong on how this would go on H-hour. Some have admitted their miscalculations, others are coping and you can almost see them with fingers crossed, hoping for a big Russian win because their credibility's on the line. I was in Kyiv about ten days before it kicked off, when it was reported that the invasion would come at any moment, and I too remembered being worried that some time during the night the power would go out, internet and cell service would go offline, etc. Turns out none of that happened.
In general, I think the problem was these experts made too many assumptions based on watching Russian staged drills on TV Zvezda, and they also assumed the Russians would fight the war like we would fight the war- something like Desert Storm.
Also side note- a friend of mine was misidentified in a viral social media pic as the Ghost of Kyiv. He's just a war correspondent who happened to be standing in front of a Mig-29 while wearing a balaclava.

      @Bingo_Bango_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +91

The craziest part is the number of people claiming that somehow having a 40 mile long convoy is a show of... capacity? strength? People are still saying "when that reaches Kyiv" even though the convoy hadn't moved for a day, then two, then three.
If you actually look at the convoy, at least the footage before the raids started, you can see it's mostly a line of trucks, not tanks- the convoy *is* the resupply, not an armored super-army slowly crawling at Kyiv.
What an absolute disaster for the Russian military.

But paratroopers are pretty light-weight, they should not be anywhere near as effective as they are in HOI4. Don't care how "well-trained" they may be, you need weight to push into places. The idolization of armor is a classic error, in modern war the concept of bulletproof doesn't exist. There's always something that can poke a hole in you, the two things that keep that from happening are rational tactics and high tech electronics. Both things these people don't want to consider because hardware is cool, you can own a toy tank, you can drive tanks in games. You dont want to play a game where you never get hit because your higher-ups kept you in reasonably safe positions and because the box to the left of you does magic that keeps smart munitions from picking you out.
These same people also only ever think in terms of "total victory " because that's how games define victory, they can't conceive of tactical victory or strategic retreats or unconventional warfare.

The arguments he gives to justify it are frankly stupid, as in Iraq US helicopters were also being taken down by old tech, even by machineguns, and there are plenty of M1 Abrams destroyed in service of other countries, (in US service too, but less). I'm starting to suspect this may just be another piece of anti Russian propaganda, or at the very least he didn't care about making any actually good arguments.
The argument about the S-400 is particularly stupid as we are talking about a ballistic missile which is a small target going hypersonic.

You can clearly tell the commanders of the Russian army have never played a single hour of HOI4, because their mistakes are pretty much 1:1 what NOT to do in HOI. These include but are not limited to:
    - running out of motorized
    - not putting up air
    - attacking with tanks through the marshes of northern Ukraine
    - force attacking while divisions are still training
    - losing a fuckton of equipment to attrition, some of which was just yoinked by local farmers using tractors
Honestly the only reason the Russians are a second-rate power and not a 3rd rate power is their giant nuclear arsenal. Otherwise the US and China would totally eat their lunch in the great power game.

And they gave them everything. Russia got food (otherwise they'd have starved ans not been able to fight), they got their entire logistics from the allied (all of their Jeeps were from America), they got tanks and airplanes.
I'm pretty sure, the logistics equipmemt by the Allies alone back then was better than what they sport today.

I am also not sure about your statement, "... they gave them everything." Overall, most of the equipment used by the Soviets was made in the Soviet Union. And also, if you didn't know, millions of Soviets starved to death during the war. The military came first and was supplied and fed while the rest of the country was dying of famine. Your claim about logistics is also wrong.
All the Soviet logistics were created by the Soviets (what a surprise that a country creates its own logistics!) The logistics between the Soviets, Americans, and Brits were managed together between the countries. Do you know why the Soviets didn't have any Jeeps? Because Jeep is an American company that makes military equipment only for the US military. Over 50% of the supplies were delivered after 1943. By that time, it became clear that German is not capable of winning a war against the Soviet Union. German high command considered offering the Soviets peace after winning the Battle of Kursk (but they lost). It was in the US's best interests to supply the Soviets with the stuff they want so they continue the war.
Your claim about logistics equipment is simply stupid. Any military in today's world uses better logistics equipment that was supplied by the Allies to the USSR.
The claim about stealing isn't the brightest either. Of course, theft of food and clothes occurred, but they were minor and rare incidents. Why would a soldier steal a Stuart or a locomotive? And also how would he do that?
Lend-lease was very helpful to the Soviet Union and Britain during WW2 and probably saved millions of lives. There is no reason to argue with that, but saying that lend-lease was the only thing that saved the Soviets' military from complete collapse or carried them through the war is completely wrong.

Regarding the main roads I have a depressing little factoid for that point; The Russians stick to the main roads because THEY HAVE NO CHOICE. Yes, you read that right. They have a massive long snaking convoy stuck on a road because if they tried to head across the Ukrainian fields they would lose the convoy before it even reached any Ukrainians. You see in the Russian military corruption is so endemic it has rotted everything from the top to the very bottom. They only care about their own personal wallets and appeasing their direct superiors with lies. Officers embezzle left right and center. Conscripts sell almost any equipment they are issued with on the black market. No one wants to report anything because doing so might turn attention to their own wrongdoings and those who rock the boat rarely last long.
So what does that have to do with Russian equipment being stuck traveling on roads? Well, maintaining vehicles costs money. Even intact vehicles need preventative maintenance. Typically you'd need to turn the engine over and move the vehicle once a month. There are signs that for many of Russia's combat vehicles even that simple bit of care has not been performed for at least a year. The tires of their wheeled vehicles have been decaying in the sun for a long time. Due to poor maintenance, the wheels, axles, and drive shafts of many Russian combat vehicles will not survive the rigors of Ukrainian mud. So they have no choice but to stick to the roads. They are trapped into moving single or double file down predictable routes towards the enemy. Ordered not to abandon their vehicles. This might also be why we see so few Russian aircraft. Most of their aircraft I suspect have become unflyable decorations due to neglect.
All of this seems to have been a surprise to the Russian high command. Putin has fostered a culture in his government similar to the soviet union where failure is not something you ever report or admit to. I imagine the corruption that was utterly hollowing out the military was not reported or vastly underestimated. They thought they had a capable military and when they realized they didn't most of it was already in Ukraine. Which was when Putin started begging his allies for troops.

Adding to Mr Bob's comment above me, the Russian media stated "Russian tanks don't fear mud" (I'm paraphrasing a bit), and then proceeded to get stuck in mud all over the place. Plus, another reason I believe they are sticking to the roads are the rumors that the Russian forces don't have any GPS capability, and driving down a main road is easier than trying to decipher a map.

    • @Jerickjv
      @Jerickjv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@MuffinMammoth As far as I know the Russians don't have GPS. All their GPS tech relied on the US and French GPS system. A system which they've now been locked out of. They have GPS systems in their tanks, in their long range guided missiles, in their aircraft and in their ships. And all of it is just useless paperweights now. Their long range missiles need the exact coordinates of the target and launch point to be inputed by hand. If anything blows it off course even by a little it's going to miss because it can't correct itself. That's assuming the barely trained soldier putting in the numbers even knows what he is doing. Their ground troops just have paper maps (if even) and if rumors are to be believed they haven't been taught how to read them. Their aircraft have resorted to using slow, inaccurate civilian GPS systems, the kind you'd find on the dashboard of a F**KING car. There is no way those things update fast enough for a fighter jet.
Their expensive encrypted comns systems only works if they have 4g so they lost secure comns once they took out the cell towers. Their GPS systems which guide their missiles are entirely reliant on systems and technology controlled by rival nations. It's pretty clear the Russian designers were either massively underfunded and/or just didn't care. They delivered tech that could be demonstrated and little else.
Edit: Don't ask me why they aren't using GLONASS. The fact that they have an alternative just makes their decision to use GPS so much all the more bewildering.

oh yeah i bet casualities of this war will be 1-10 million if every man really put there all or to be generous with more modern scale like idk syrian civil war 400k-700k. actually i heard from commenter that say he thinks there be 10k casualities of russians. i actually think that is pretty reasonable estimate, if conflict stays as it is. so 10k-40k if currently like the current state of the war.

You can tell that something's wrong when I, a complete amateur, who has literally never even played a wargame, nor studied general strategy or tactics, or even so much as touched a single battle report of a single war, ever, looks at almost every facet of the russian strategy so far and says "that seems like a bad idea."

This what happens whan you take out all of the competent people in government and switch them whit yes man. This what also happened in WW2. You wouldn't believe how many officers and war heros where just taken out from the gulags to the battlefield

+Court_of_the Crimson_Kingfish Except you have no fucking idea what's going on on the terrain, and almost as if the data you've been served is nothing related to the truth. Ukrainains are losing way too much of everything, they don't have air-force, but they keep "winning" every day, destroying thousands of Russians further into their lands. All of their largest cities are surrounded, they have no air-force, they keep falling back, they're mobilizing everyone, but aparently all of the Russians are dead.

@@guestimator121 And everything you said is wrong.
The only genuinely surrounded Ukrainian city rn is Mariopol, although admittedly, only because Kherson surrendered... however, the same Russian assault that took Kherson was then destroyed at Mykolaiv, a dozen kilometers down the highway.
A Ukrainian Su-24 was identified in the air this morning so Ukraine still has an operational Air Force.
The Ukrainiens retook Bucha and seem to have made a breakthrough towards Sumy and Chernihiv.
Most sources I could find about encirclement are Russian media... the same guys that have been claiming Russian air supremacy for the last week, every single day, with the energy of "for real guys we're not lying this time!!!!!!!"

It just hit me…the reason why they are not destroying critical infrastructure is because they intend to capture it, because they DO NOT have the technological capacity to repair the high tech infrastructure. So they leave them functional.

Late reply, but you are correct. Months ago, I remember watching YT videos speculating about Putin’s power base, and much of Putin’s support comes from the oligarchs, of which he is actually one of them (despite throwing out some through various windows). Russia has attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure (and wheat silos) but I haven’t heard too much more lately.
