Journaling is such a great way to express your thoughts, pain, insecurities, self doubt, whatever is going on in your head it’s much better once you put it to paper.

Tough, but oh so true, but the basics start with being honest with yourself.
And that you have the courage and the audacity to hold up a mirror to yourself.

Journalling was one of the things that kept me sane during the quarantine era of COVID. I haven’t stopped since. It really does help settle an overloaded mind.

My first journal entry was June 28, 1997. I have been an avid journaler ever since this day. This video said, what I have always believed inside. I always tell people, Journal like no one will ever read it, just enjoy it.

I think your advice is excellent, and I appreciate this video. The last three years have been tumultuous for me - deaths of parents and other loved ones, cancer and mental illness in my immediate family - and I've been adrift, angry, afraid. But human connection has kept me grounded, given me perspective, helped me laugh when I didn't think I had it in me. And our dogs. I adopted a puppy last year when I didn't plan to (he was abandoned in a dumpster; how could I not adopt him?), he's grown to about 90 pounds, and he wants to play. Who has time to mope when a 90 pound puppy wants to play?
Journaling hasn't been part of the equation for me. I think it should be. At night when the dogs and my wife are asleep, I start thinking when I want the internal voice to be quiet. I know from experience that it helps to sit down and engage that voice in written dialog. I live a blessed life and I know it. I've never experienced need or want, I had loving parents who loved each other, I have siblings and extended family who love me, and my wife is far better than I could possibly deserve. And none of this is mine or my just due. Love is a gift, not something we earn or deserve. We come into the world naked, and we leave it the same way, with nothing but what we've written onto our own hearts. I'm afraid of loss, and a fool to want to hang on to what I could never keep. Writing is memory, though, and it helps us see reality for what it is and to remake it into what we hope it can be. I need to be more diligent about writing my memories of my parents, my love for my wife and children (and dogs), to record the person I am today who'll be gone when I've become who I'll be in ten years.
I'm in danger of journaling in your comments section. Perhaps my rambling in comments sections and on FB is a sort of ersatz journaling. I'd do better to pull out my journal and use a pen, not a keyboard.

Wow, thanks for the kind words. You know, someone else could make a video about the healing power of dogs! I had a 75 lb Dalmatian through some of my toughest times. I had to be there for her, regardless.

I'm so glad I found you because of what you share has been reflected in my every day life for countless years. Years when on a Royal Navy warship, or since retirement my work with Emergency Helicopter Services as a trauma surgeon. Writing has always been a great healer.
Journalling has been my 'saviour', also. Recently, for example, I arrived home very distressed after treating a teenage casualty; child casualties always upset me. So after making a cup of tea and changing out of my jumpsuit, the first place to go after greeting my children is opening my journal; blank pages have never intimidated me. Because over the years I've adopted a 5 minute, strictly timed writing exercise where I write non-stop, without ceasing to punctuate and erase my thoughts, the day. This is healing because once my words have poured out from ink onto paper, there they remain.
I must thank you HJ for your wisdom, your insight and your great understanding of the human condition. Have you thought of writing a book? Love, peace and blessing, Wendi 🌻

I love your approach to daily journaling. I can see how that would be immensely helpful. This comment reminds me to do some more content on Journaling!
I have written one book, but I have only had my articles published. I do want to write some more. It is an upcoming project for the New Year. Thanks!

I used to adapt the size and speed of my handwriting to suit the nib I was using: slow and small for fine, medium for medium, etc. Now I just write at a medium speed and size no matter what nib grade I'm using - so liberating!

I have journaled on it off for decades. I must confess that I seldom spend time rereading my journals, to my detriment. Recently, shoulder surgery prevented me from using my dominant hand for six weeks. Writing with my non-dominant hand was humbling, awkward, and barely legible. It was slow going and so I did not journal very much. I felt as if I was losing my soul; my interior life suffered. I can now write with my dominant hand, but there is some significant pain, which will diminish over time. Without the ability to write easily, I think I lost some perspective, and made some bad decisions.

I really appreciate this thought provoking presentation. If I could afford your .99c membership fee I would jump on it in a heartbeat. Though I live well below the national poverty level, so I will continue to watch your videos and try what you recommend here to find a better me. When I had to retire from driving truck for a living my entire world was turned upside down and has only gotten worse since. At 59 years old it seems almost senseless to try and recreate myself but maybe there is still hope. One day at a time.

      Hello Roy,
You are very young and have a lot of years ahead. Anything can happen. There are many ways to set the stage for an Act II. You may be limited by whatever made you retire, but maybe there is a way to use some other capability to expand your reach and your connections with other people and perhaps your income as well.
Whatever it is, I am hoping for the best for you in any and all situations. I am just very appreciative to have you here as a viewer. Comment again soon and let me know how you are doing.

Really well done, this is a great video, I think it's my favorite since you started! I fully agree with the power of respecting yourself by expressing yourself freely. I grew to love using writing and fountain pens during a time of grief. This should say a lot about my agreement with confronting the Adversary, the Dragon, the Guardian of the Threshold with the power of introspection easen by journaling. Thank you for the evocative words and images always accompanied by solid content, which serves and will continue to serve in the lives of each of us.

Thanks for a reflective and gently encouraging video. I have always had an issue with a blank page, as have ny neurodivergent kids. In my journal, I always start with the date in ISO, then the pen and the ink. Whenever I've taken a short break, i tend to use another pen, so there's another subheading with that information. Breaks up the wall of white.

Hemingway I'm on board with all this mode of thought. During darker periods of my life I used to write down my most personal positive thoughts, that is, what interested me, what I wished to know better, delve into, etc. Many years later these thoughts blossomed, and although the topics and art I'm delving into may not be a replica of what they were back then they function in a similar vein. The written word can be so poweful. So I definitely advocate writing, or journaling, and using this as a treat for one's self. A lovely pad, a beautiful pen, an ink that's appealing in the most subjective manner, all should be used to jot down or even elaborate upon what offers joy or what provokes negativity. This might keep demons at bay or even annihilate them to the extent possible.

I've gone through difficult times throughout my life and have experienced great tragedy and eternal loss. Journaling gives me an outlet to tell my story. There is much comfort in the written words. It is similar to prayer. It gives us a distinct knowledge that we are not alone. I always end my scribbling with a positive thought no matter how difficult time is in the present. Great video. This was a very helpful video thank you Hemingway! I know that in order to even maintain physical health (in addition to improving mental health and lowering depression/anxiety) I have to expose and rewrite the negative thoughts and not repress or run from them ... here lately, I journal with the intent of being radically honest in my journal ... sometimes the negative stuff evaporates upon sitting in front of the page but when I get writing flowing I am sometimes able to capture some beliefs that are not serving me. I listened to your other journaling for mental health video 3 or 4 times it helped me so much. It seems like when I go back and reread what I've written from a few weeks ago or more that's when I can best have the distance and detachment to sort the inner critical voice from truth of situations and circumstances. In this video, what you said about isolation and loneliness really hit home. Things really shifted once I stopped working outside the home.
Oh, one last insight: watching you journal in many locations makes me remember how I used to carry my journal absolutely everywhere with me! That's one action I can take now to increase success with capturing those fleeting but nasty negative dialogs that sometimes flare up out of absolutely nowhere! As always, your video has inspired me a lot - thank you!

I’m sure journaling is what’s keeping me sane. It gets crowded in the head. And to me, I see my journal as a pensieve (Harry Potter reference) to come back later and get a clearer picture if I want to. But just emptying those thoughts from my head sometimes seems enough. It’s so wonderful to see you writing in different journals so I was curious. Do u maintain just 1 journal and take on another when u come to the end? Or do you have a few on the go. I fall in the latter group as I keep journals of various sizes on the go and reach for them based on mood and easy like smaller one in handbag and A5 when at my desk. Happy journaling ❤

Thank you so much for the kind comment. I keep one journal, for the most part. I have my poetry journal by Onion Skin and I have one for the Channel. These days, I mostly have one epic journal. Thanks!

So beautiful! The background goes very well with your thoughts! When talking about journaling we need to be reminded to keep doing it as sometimes depression tells us it isn’t useful.

Ok, we’re not doppelgängers and I’ll say why later. But first in this montage of many videos, I seem to recognize some views of Italian cities and/or landscapes… Am I correct? If so, could you provide a bit of information about it?
We do differ in that my interest in items of clothing is almost 0. I almost only wear cheap black t-shirts and jeans.
But I do dig some of your polos and clothes!
    Love the Hieronymus Bosch pictures!

Grazie a te per vederlo! Yes! Italy is a country that I adore. I have been many times and I have dear friends in Matera and friends in Venice and elsewhere. I even was engaged on the banks of the Grand Canal. I am very glad that you enjoyed this!

@@HemingwayJones I did enjoy the video!
I live at about one and a half hours by train from Venice.
I go there every chance I get!
I was lucky enough to visit it with no tourists around.
A Long time ago, when I worked as an exterminator, I was often there at dawn, before shops or cafés or restaurants opened.
I played a few concerts there, so I had a chance to walk through calli, fondamenta and campi at night.
It never ceases to amaze me!
On the other hand, despite having been many places in the south of Italy, I’ve never been to Matera… Such a shame!
definitely on my “to do“ list of places to visit in Italy.
Thanks for your response and for your videos!

Thanks My Friend. Always a pleasure! I wish I had that kind of continual access. I do go off season to be alone with the City and its art. Thursday’s video has a pic of me in Piazza San Marco with no one around me all the way back to the Basilica. All the best!@@lislearnitalianwithsongs

Thanks so much! I am so glad that you are enjoying the Channel. Sadly, I bought that candle over a decade ago and I forget who made it. I bought it because it is long burning and smells like a library; leather and old books. I wish I could remember. So sorry.

Nothing coalesces thoughts like paper and ink. Or, pixels and screen. Writing in longhand, though, that's the real thing. My voice is not silent as long as I have a fountain pen.
A journal is more. It's a logbook of personal adventures, and it's a revetment against the petty tintinnabulation of daily care.
    And nobody likes tintinnabulation.

    • @HemingwayJones
