Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

This is not everyone's cuppa tea but I've scored several higher end wool, cashmere, and alpaca sweaters for me and my wife at the thrift for less than $10. A quality wool shaver will make it look just like new. If you do decide the thrift route, grab the sweater and bring it to the light. Wool and cashmere are notorious for holes.

Wonderful Carl. When it comes to cardies ( a us British affectionately call them) I would rather save for a year and get the very best one. It will last a lifetime, age beautifully and become a true companion!
I wonder, could you do a video on the best ways to care for fine wool garments? I was always taught that washing is something to be done very rarely and then by hand in cool water with old fashioned soap flakes and the allowed to dry flat on a clothes horse outside on a warm breezy cloudy day so that it does not shrink. But normally to freshen it’s just best to hang it on a washing line on a similar day and the wool will freshen up with no need for washing. I do this and it does work but I would be interested in any other ways. Thanks Carl, keep up the good work!

Great video Carl! That Dehen 1920 is a beautiful sweater. Amazing that this video showed up at this time. Just last week I dug out an original Banana Republic Rag Wool Cable Knit Cardigan with suede leather elbow patches and woven leather buttons. I bought it in 1980 when BR was first getting started. Catalog was artist's drawings and ordering was by mail only. Unfortunately, it seems wool shrinks when left unworn and in a dresser as I can no longer button the buttons. That LL Bean sweater looks like a pretty good replacement.

Try cold soaking that old wool cardigan with a wool specific detergent, something that will add back lanolin to the wool. I have used the laundress shampoo, but maybe another option out there. The wool likely dried out and shrunk depending on how it was stored.

If you have an expert knitter in your life (and you've proven to them you will wear it and take good care of it) they will probably be overjoyed to hand-knit you a custom fit cardigan in the softest 100% wool or cashmerino yarn they can find. It won't be cheap, the good yarn can be $20 - $30 per skein and sweaters can take more than 6 skeins.

Any opinion on Filson's cardigan? Seems robust and I love the brown color, 295 on sale with their lifetime guarantee. Wool looks pretty course/scour prone? I do live in drafty house and piddle in a cold shop, so I am looking for something that will split those duties and still serve me well cooking, smoking meat and frying turkeys while watching college games on Saturday. Leaning towards a Dehen Shall Sweater coat that they can bury me in. Looks tough and versatile (layering and ease of handwashing/cleaning)? I know its bend-over expensive, but I've been a Filson customer for ~30 years - I am use to that.

very interesting and undoubtably good quality but: 6 buttons vs the typical 5; its cut is more coat like and less sweater like; and made with worsted wool which is typically used for suits and not sweaters (most of my suits are worsted) which is why the look of the "sweater" is quite a fine weave. For a sweater not my cup of tea despite my fondness of cardigans. Look to William Lockie, north sea, blacksheep, andsons or inverallan for more typical fare. but as I stated, the quality looks fine indeed. nice choice Carl.

How does that Dehen fit? I too have a more Eastern European build and by their measurements am smack between the large and xl.

its fitted, id go large, plus its wool so it will stretch. If you plan on wearing thickers shirts go XL.
I was on upper end of M and it fits great with a t shirt.

@@countvantran Thank you! I recently found a new-old stock Best Made Co. by Dehen in large. It is the same cardigan, but Dehen used different buttons and red wool in the interiors of the pockets for the Best Made label. It is an excellent cardigan and large was the right way to go.

That moment when Carl says it is a once in a lifetime purchase.....that's when I know I have to have the item! I really do like the good better best format as a guide to more affordable items that still meet Carl's standards of quality and are hopefully USA made as well.

I think the best cardigan money can buy is either a cardigan from Brunello Cucinelli or Loro Piana. I am hoping someday I buy myself a sweater from Loro Piana tbh

Interestingly enough, the mill tour I mention at the end of this video used to be a Loro Piana mill! Then they sold it (and all the equipment) to American Woolen. In fact, a lot of the same employees work there too.

    Does the Dehen feel scratchy?

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  ปีที่แล้ว

The wool is sort of scratchy. Not as bad as Filsons Mackinaw wool but not merino soft either.

Wool is warmer than cotton... That's why I don't like sweaters! I like the look, but... I'm that guy in leather thongs(flip-flops) eating a blizzard in a blizzard. I'll stick to my unbuttoned flannel with buttoned up sleeves for weather over 45F. The cardigan might be comfy for those below 0F winters, but Tokyo doesn't see those. Maybe if I can ever convince my wife to move to Maine/Alaska /Montana/Hokkaido...

I'm sure the quality of the Dehen is good. However, it just looks...lifeless to me. Something that's too informal to look snazzy. But too formal to look casual.
