  • On this episode - Recently I've been experimenting with a couple different Wake Baits for inshore Saltwater fishing. I have to admit I am now addicted to Wake Bait fishing. It's a visual experience much like topwater and the hits are amazing. I haven't had a trip yet where I didn't get eats, as you'll see in the video. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

I've always had good luck with purple colored hard baits specifically mirrolure topwater

Very informative. Yozuri makes a similar lure called an L-Minnow. It’s a slow sinker. Stops sinking on retrieve. Deadly for trout in moderate visibility.

Glenn, this is one bait I highly recommend having in your box! From April to November in warmer water, the wake bait can be very exciting to fish!

Another good vid Salty. We run the Yozuri 3DB wake, but your right, it doesn't have the action that the KVD has. We've been killing top water with the Gold Skitterwalker lately. Talk about makin a ruckus. Thing is loud as heck and walks with no effort. We were up Goose on a cloudy windy afternoon recently pulling 21 and 22 inch Specks at 2pm with the Skitter. Guess it all depends on if they want it loud and fast or slow and subtle. Just have both in the boat

That's what its about, having a variety to throw and being ready for whatever conditions are. Getting hung up on one or two baits/lures I think can hurt some anglers, experimentation and flexibility are key. Thanks for the comment Jeff.

Funny. My experience with these KVD type lures are with bass in the winter months. They are great for deeper parts of the creeks where the treble hooks don't get snagged on stumps. The noise and shake seems to wake up slow moving bass from the bottom. You're # 2 pick seems to do best in clear water in Virginia Beach. Now you got me thinking about using these suckers in saltwater. Thanks for the video.

Try the 6th Sense wakebaits when the conditions are a little more windy.

An excellent option and their Wakers come for 2 depths, O-1 foot and 1-3 foot depths, the deeper running one is actually more a crankbait than a waker but same action and clack.

I have had a kvd in my tackle box forever, but I have just started to throw it more. It has been a productive lure to mix in.

    • @haltysalty7537

I think that's the formula, just mix it in every now and then. Sometimes it's fire!

I love wake baits on the mid- to lower Texas coast, and have been meaning to throw the KVD model. I have several colors. I’ve had good success with the Strike Pro Hunchback but have 2 that have taken on water rusting the ballbearing rattle and discoloring the interior chamber. It may not affect the retrieve but it’s disconcerting to have that happen to expensive saltwater lures that you’d hope didn’t leak. So, I’ll be going with the KVD, the Yozuri fat-bodied waker, and the great wakers from 6th Sense. I have the Yozuri you demonstrated but haven’t thrown it with any success or confidence. Your experience and test drive make me want to use it (as you suggest) in very calm flat water, whereas the others with louder clackers seem more appropriate in chop.

Thanks John! I should mention too that I always thoroughly rinse my baits after fishing to remove salt. The KVD says nickel plated hooks so I suppose thats good but time will tell. I'll be checking out the Hunchback so thanks for the tip.

@@haltysalty7537 yeah, rinsing the baits is something I always do. It wouldn’t have mattered with the Hunchbacks as seawater leaked into the interior chamber some how, a seam, an eye screw attachment, who knows? But it is a disappointment on expensive lures.

Always well done. I haven’t tried a wakebait but will have to do so. Seeing the OBX in that vid killed me, was just there and wished Id brought the boat.

I recently tried the KVD Shizzle on the salt flats and it’s wobble cause a very uncomfortable retrieve…. And didn’t have any results…maybe I need to give it a little more time, or maybe a stiffer rod might help?

    • @haltysalty7537

I'd say don't give up on it. The ideal depth seems to be 2-5 ft. Basically I have found that where traditional topwater works, the wakebait works also. I'm looking forward to fishing it this fall and winter for speckled trout.

Another excellent video! Loos like it was a great day of fishing. Nice looking Reds! Will have to give those baits a try, as I have only generally used something along the lines of the Salt Strong Moonwalker or Heddon Spook (bone / white), with good results.
Again, thanks for always putting out good content with great sound / vid quality

you replacing the hooks on the KVD? If so, with what?

    • @haltysalty7537
      @haltysalty7537  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I use the hooks that came with the KVD until they start to show some rust. I'll typically replace with the red gamakatsu trebles
