Canoe Camp Climb
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ธ.ค. 2021
Welcome to CANOE CAMP CLIMB. I'm Butch, and my wife is Barb. We hope you'll tag along on our canoeing, camping, and hiking adventures... mostly in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.
Sometimes we use our RV as a basecamp... but our ultralight pack canoes allow us to reach the most remote waters and mountains where we like to tent and hammock camp in the backcountry.
This channel is a fun hobby for us... and we hope you get some enjoyment out of it. If you see us out there... please say hello.

Remote Adirondack River Paddle | Canoeing the Chubb
In this video Barb and I paddle the untamed Chubb River near Lake Placid, NY in the Adirondack Park. We start at the put in on Averyville Road and paddle our way into the remote high peaks wilderness. The Chubb River snakes it way through a beautiful wetland towards Nye and Street Mountains... two of the Adirondack's 46 high peaks. There are also magnificent views of the rugged Sawtooth Mountain Range. The Chubb is full of beaver activity along the way and encounter several beaver dams to deal with. The Chubb is also a great paddle for bird watching. There is a rugged .3 mile canoe carry on this route but well worth the effort. In higher water you can paddle about 4.5-5 miles upstream before the Chubb becomes impassable. This was a 4 hour outing for Barb and I. I hope you enjoy.

I would love to be there. I tried to win the canoe that they have from the Northern forest canoe trail website. I would like that to be me in the park some day 😊
Thanks for watching Thomas. Hopefully 2025 brings you a new canoe and some time in the Adirondacks
what map was that you used in the end of the video, looking for a good physical map for that area thanks

Great video! Thank you for sharing
thank you. I had a great time on this trip.
😋😋😋😋😋☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️
Hi my friend how many days is that trip
I did it as an overnighter... which is pretty ambitious. You could easily spend 3-4 days out there if you'd like.
Love the video but have a question regarding the food. I see the cooler and know people use those blue barrels when canoe camping, do you hang them or just put them away from camp and hope for the best?
@@Ares_dA_K1nG hey thanks for the question. If i recall this trip correctly.. my buddy Mike brought a hardsided cooler that held just canned beer. That was stashed in bushes that night. I had my bear can as usual and always just stash that in bushes/deadfall when not in use. I also had a green icemule soft backpack cooler that got hung.
Love this!!❤
Thanks John. I watch it to lower my blood pressure. Lol.
What a great way to spend the day.
Thank you. Many of our favorite days are spent on the water together.
Are you wearing a dry suit
Nicely done!
Thank you.
Amazing. Well Done all of you.
Thank you Smitty.
Thank you
It's wonderful when you can enjoy nature with all your senses. With best regards from Austria
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It helps me get through the dead of winter when all of our waterways freeze over.
We met Butch between the Hoel and Turtle Pond carry. These videos are great! An absolute inspiration for us on our next trip.
Hey it is great to hear from you. I hope you had an amazing trip. That night I think it got really cold if I remember correctly.Which pond and site did you end up staying at?
@@CanoeCampClimb We had a great trip, in hindsight should have spaced in more down time! We couldn't find a free camping spot until Long Pond, but got a great spot at LP#2 just before sunset. BTW, is there an outfitter you recommend in the area?
@@georgepopadopolous Hey... sorry for the slow response. #2 is a nice site... as is #3. Here are some outfitter recommendations close to the St Regis Canoe Area: St Regis Canoe Outfitters. They have a very nicely stocked store right in Saranac Lake. Good people. www.canoeoutfitters.com/ Mac's Canoe Livery. There little shop is right on the edge of the St Regis Canoe Area. Very convenient. Brian and Grace MacDonald have run it for years. www.macscanoeadk.com/
Impressive, thank you.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Life jacket?
Nice video thanks. Life jackets.
Thank you. We wear our life jackets nearly all the time. On this paddle Fish Creek is between 1-3 feet with a sandy bottom, a close shoreline, and negligible current. We've paddled it many time and know every bend. That said... we wear them in all of our newer videos
This is such a breathtaking video! Love tortoises and turtles, dogs -- heck, all animals. And NY's Thousand Islands look marvelous! 😁 I've never been ... perhaps someday.
Thank you. We love this park and hope to get back there next spring.
I love this video! 🙌🏻 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I've been thinking of this resort and the people of Tennessee a lot since Hurricane Helene.
@@CanoeCampClimb 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great video a little rough but I’ll bet you’re still glad you did it.
19 ponds as an overnight trip was a bit ambitious... mostly because the filming slowed me down. But I loved this trip. The wind on the last pond, Hoel Pond, was out of hand. If I would've waited 10 minutes it would have blew past. Thanks for watching... much appreciated.
Did you see any potential campsites around the ponds besides the ones near where the Finch Pruyn lodge once stood?
The entire shoreline is pretty rugged and thick... so not a lot of places to get out and explore. The best bet imo was the northern end near the Boreas River. You can walk the old road and scout from there.... you just have to make sure you are 150 ft from water, trail ,or roads.
What hammock / brand is this?
It is American Made in Ohio by a company called Hammock Gear.
@@CanoeCampClimb Wanderlust? I have one of their under quilts. Just want an all in one hammock - not one with a separate bug net, ridgeline, etc.
@@RugerM77 yes the wanderlust. I love the kit. I think its all just under 5lbs. I have the 20 degree setup.
Great video love the peacefulness and silence of it.
Thank you David. This was one of my favorite solo trips.
it'd be fun to list the beers you're trying too, in the same list/description section as your gear, you know? idk, as a deep craft beer dude myself, it looks like y'all aren't messing around, and could showcase it too. Either way, Cheers!
your buddy's crackin' an early AM hill farmstead!! love it
that's a good idea Christopher. Maybe for an upcoming video. My buddy Mike is also a bourbon aficionado.
@@christopherbailey3740 Nothing like a breakfast beer to get the blood flowing. Lol.
that morning shot around @4:55 man, good stuff
We had amazing weather for this trip. That particular morning was one I'll always remember. Thanks for watching.
the scene is so beautiful
thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
No place like the adk nice video you can see the peacefulness on your face.
thank you. We certainly love the Adirondacks too.
Lows lower section / Hitchins Pond access still closed due to dam repairs . This will go on thru the Fall (2024) If you're feeling burly do the 2.5 mile portage to get into the area below dam.
yes. Hopefully it will open soon. But it may be late late Fall is my understanding. Such a beautiful area.
Looking for something at the last minute but these sites look packed together. departing tomorrow and leaving this to the very last minute is not the greatest idea, but that's what I do. Lol
Some sites are spread apart more than others. This time of year (after Labor Day) the traffic at Fish Creek really slows down so you could very well be flanked by empty sites. Enjoy your trip.
@@CanoeCampClimb Thanks for the info! I actually decided to do the Meachan Lake campground.. looks pretty nice!
@@galaxytraveler5779 you'll enjoy that too.
Well the maps that you had recommended are invaluable. I like this trip along with/its simplicity. Thanks. JP
you're welcome. I am glad to be of help.
waiting for new video
Enjoyed it. As new as I am “the paddlers guide” and following your route makes it all the more enjoyable. Love the channel. JP
thanks JP. Glad you found the vid helpful
Hey I enjoy your channel. I have asked you this question before, the dry bag that you have used is one which you had said was around forever. I don’t remember the make or model but I am more interested in a dry bag vs a dry pack. Let me know what you think. Thanks again.
Thank you. The dry pack is the 110L NRS Bill's Bag. For dry bags (or dry sacks as some say)... I just go with what I can find on sale between proven brands "Sea to Summit", "NRS", and "Osprey". Most of mine are Sea to Summit though.
Where is the put in this looks Great!!!!!?
The put in is on Averyville Road just southwest of Lake Placid. The trailhead is jut past the Northville Placid trail parking area on your left.
@@CanoeCampClimb Thanks!!
Love your videos!!!
thank you. I appreciate that
Haha this is so awesome. I googled Fish Creek Pond videos to show my out of state friends how amazing it is on opening weekend - low and behold, we made a Cameo! At 2:17 you can see my truck and camper! photos.app.goo.gl/y73zWrzxwqb8M5fN6
Beautiful place Butch! Very similar to the Oswegatchi!
Great Video Butch! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Matt.
Another great video, Butch….Beautiful
thank you.
have you guys been getting out?
That is a nice looking river! Quiet, relaxing! Fantastic!
Thanks Justin.
How are you butch. Very nice video my friend. I hope to go back to the ADK one of these days.
Things are good. I haven't had much time for any overnight trips lately so it's been short day trips for now. I hope you're well.
Wow that's absolutely beautiful! Reminds me a lot of the Oswegatchie with the beaver dams. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Hey Alan. Yes... I think very similar.
Just Gorgeous ! You know relaxing trips like that make you live longer. There is a Huge difference between being alive , and living. You guys got it made, nice video.🔥
Thank you. We try. We certainly have our share of struggles. But getting out on the water erases all of that from our minds.
Sweet paddle, looked like you got to see a bunch of wildlife, and rip over some dams too!
It is a super fun paddle. Lots of twists and turns... and beaver activity. It is an incredible birding spot...sadly I didn't catch very much of it on video. The wind was knocking us around a bit. Thanks for watching.
Makes my thirst for the Adirondacks even more apparent ! Hope to get back to that area soon ! Well done folks !
Thanks Craig. I watched you vid last night on the TV. Very relaxing.
I want to start by saying that I certainly enjoyed your video. I found your channel and subbed some time ago. I can honestly say for the past 5 decades that I have spent in the back country of the dacks, I have never heard the amount of wildlife you have in this video.
I (we) make it a focal point. In this video I was a bit bummed that we weren't able to capture all the bird sightings we had. The wind was blowing us around pretty good.
I wish I could paddle without the pedals again. Ended up with a bum shoulder and had to build a paddlewheel set for my canoe. One of these days I'll end up in the Adirondacks paddling like a normal person haha
I'm sorry to hear you have a bad wing. But love that you found a solution to deal with it instead of just throwing in the towel. It shows what kind of person you are.... resilient. Here's to healing up and losing the wheels.
Amazing filmmaking. Loved it. That feels like it's away from everything...another great day on the water
This paddle is fairly rugged. And you're not likely to see anyone else out there. The weather that day was interesting. It felt like a major storm was going to roll through at any moment. Thanks for checking out the video and the nice compliment.
btw... I just saw you have a new vid out. I look forward to watching it tonight.
