What does it take in your opinion to be an ICU nurse? Do you have to be extroverted or have a strong aggressive personality? What if you're a little more on the quiet side?

I have been an ICU nurse for 6 years and I am an introvert. When I need to advocate for my patients, I can be aggressive. :)

You take care of very sick patients in the ICU and their family members, I know that it must cost you a lot emotionally, mentally, spiritually etc.

It would probably depend on your location. I live in rural Atlantic Canada and several of my classmates got new grad positions as ER and NICU nurse, as there is a high demand for nurses here. If you live in a larger area with less of a time-limited demand for nurses, those positions may require some experience beforehand. My advice would be to apply to everything you're interested in. The worst that can happen is they won't call you! Then, if needed, when you have more experience, apply again. They might recognize the resume and see how eager you are to work for them :)

Float pool is good to get a taste of everything, but definitely can be hard to start in if you don't have a good foundation as a nurse. :)

awesome!!! I really got to see and understand this first hand during nursing school ICU rotation. I will never forget the sight of the patient who was maxed out on levophed and his feet were black. The nurse ended up calling in the family to start to say their goodbyes
