  • Hey guys welcome back and thank you for being here. In this video you’ll listen to my experience of my ICU interview as a new grad out of school. I have no previous experience in nothing that has to do with healthcare so I had no idea what to expect for my interview. It well pretty well overall and I got the job of course. The only thing was that I was applying to start in a residency program which has 6 weeks of didactic learning followed by 6 weeks of preceptorship on my floor. I just started my preceptorship and I am very happy with the choice I made to start in a residency program. Really hope this video can be somewhat helpful if you are thinking about applying to a residency program. Again thank you for watching and thank you for the support. Good luck of you have an upcoming interview.

    Why do you want to work in this hospital?
    If we were to hire you, how long of commitment you can give to us? - lifelong
    Tell me when a patient is on lots of pain what would you do? - follow nursing process.
    what is the process of getting personal certification? - her question to the hiring manager.
    How does your scheduling works?- her question to the interviewer.
    You Welcome ;)

    Pain medication scenerio, you want to ASSESS patient first and show that you can think critically, that is more imprortant than verbalizing that you just give him his pain medication. You need to make sure he isn't having abnormal pain first, that their aren't non-medicating therapies that you could try such as repositioning, ice/heat etc, and then if none of those are appropriate see if he has pain medication due.

    Congratulations on the ICU job! I’m going through the same thing, I am searching for an L&D job of my dreams while all my peers are getting hired. Pretty discouraging but to get the job of our dreams it’s worth it!

      Hi Kayla, same things happened to me. Don’t feel discouraged and don’t be inpatient. That is how you end up in a job that you don’t like don’t enjoy going to work.

    How is night shift schedule works for you? Do you do 3 days 12 hour shifts in a row or every other day? Do they rotate you from day to night or you stay on nights? What do you do sleep wise on your days off? Do you stay up at night to keep the same routine as work or you stay active during the day? How hard is it coming back from day off to the night shift? Any suggestions you have, I am looking into night shift most likely, trying to figure out how to function on night schedule? Thanks

    • @TheTavFam
      @TheTavFam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi, so this is a great question and I remember having the exact same question before starting. I will soon be making a whole video on this topic. But to give you a small explanation, I usually prefer to get my my three days back to back. On my first day I sleep from 3-6 pm and get a good nap and I am usually fine to work my whole shift without getting tired and then I come home sleep till about 6 pm for my second and third shift. The day after my third shift I go to bed right when I get home and sleep till about 1 pm and then spend the rest of my day awake and go to bed again around 11 pm. It’s a bit difficult to explain but I’ll make a thorough video soon. I don’t find it difficult to rotate between day and night anymore. In the beginning it was tough but once you get a hang of how much sleep you need to feel rested you get used to it. Sorry it’s hard to explain but hopefully this helped a bit.

    Why did they feel you were over qualified? I'm a new grad trying to get directly into ICU. People keep telling me to start on med surg but I have zero interest in it. I also have 13 years paramedic experience, so hoping ICU hiring teams will look into that.

    • @TheTavFam
      @TheTavFam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure why she felt that but the person who was interviewing me told me that. New grad ICU programs will look into your past experience. Do not settle for med surge, keep on looking and applying. ICU does hire new grad for the ICU under the new grad program. Good luck

    Congratulations on the ICU Job!!!
    I feel the exact same way. I know I want to work in the ICU, that is my #1 goal. However with just graduating I feel like I am at the bottom of the barrel with the lack of clinical experience and such due to going through the program while COVID occurred and it being an accelerated program. However, I will not give up on what I want, you didn't and here you are as living proof that it can and will happen!

    • @TheTavFam
      @TheTavFam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Ashley, and congratulations on becoming a nurse. Please don’t stop pushing toward your ultimate goal. I never thought it would be possible to start in the ICU or at least i assumed I would get there someday. Everything happens for a reason. You will end up in the ICU and you’re going to love it. Good luck 🍀

    Hi ! Thank you for this video ! I’m a final semester nursing student. We have missed clinical hours due to covid in the spring semester and it looks like that clinicals are going to be online again in the fall. I was really looking forward to my ICU rotation in the fall as I want to apply to the new grad icu program. Do you have any advice for my situation ?

    • @TheTavFam
      @TheTavFam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Starry, I’m sorry to hear that. These times have gotten in the way of so many things. I know people who were hired without clinical experience in the ICU. I would say just have a great resume and still apply. Don’t let that stop you from at least trying. Good luck and I hope everything works out

    Thanks for this clip. So. I wasn't clear at the end, did you say your interview format went the way it did because you weren't applying to the ICU through a Nurse Residency or your friend's interview mode was more involved because she was applying to be ICU nurse through a residency program, meaning that they asked her many questions on CPR, ACLS, different procedures because she applied through Nurse residency. Thanks.

    • @TheTavFam
      @TheTavFam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey sorry for the confusion, what I meant to explain was that my friend was not applying for a nurse residency and they asked her a lot more clinical questions that they did not ask me when interviewing for a nurse residency program.

  • @MolliciousJ
    @MolliciousJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your friend that applied to a regular ICU position as a new grad...did the position say it requires experience? I'm struggling with this now on whether I should still apply for those types of positions that say they require experience or not.

    • @TheTavFam
      @TheTavFam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For my friend it was a different experience, she never applied online to the position. She went in person to a facility that hires a lot of new grads out of school. I applied to lots of those positions that said experience required and never got a call back
