My dad was an RN in the ER, ICU, CCU, and CVICU for almost 30 years. He recently passed from brain cancer. I miss hearing his stories from being a nurse.

I have been an ICU ( MICU & CCU) for 43 years and recently retired. I love the ICU because I like being organized and prepared if my patient crashes or I get a trainwreck from the E.R. or an in house cardiac arrest that we put on Artic Sun hypothermia protocol. My unit gets IABP, Impella's, Watchman's, Strokes and neuro cases, CVVHD dialysis and the list goes on. It can be very hectic and stressful and now my unit is a covid unit for the sickest ones. I do like getting to know my patients and families better than an E.R. nurse is able to do because their goal is to move them out ASAP. People need to know that patient outcomes are directly related to the nursing care they receive in both departments and that we nurses are the best advocates for our patients.

ER nurse! Love the organized chaos. I’ve been to ICU a few times and it doesn’t have the same energy. It can get overwhelming sometimes in the ER but each day we try to get better at managing it.

So good to hear both sides of the story. I'm a trauma ER nurse. It feels like there's a great divide between ER and ICU. I do think that most ppl do not realize we do a focus assessment and deal with such. I feel like alot of nurses get upset when maintenance fluids are not hung or central lines are not placed. I have had 2 ICU pts before and a HAMS, and I have to choose what orders are critical. I find it frustrating that we do not always support each other in this field. (We don't have CNAs either)

I'm an ICU RN that started out working EMS while in nursing school and continue to work there for my county so I kind of work in both worlds. Basically, I run enough 911 to know that I wanted to be an ICU nurse when I got my RN😂😂 I enjoy being able to hand off my 911 patients to the very talented ER nurses and say ,"I'll see ya again soon in the ICU when they get you stabilized." Being able to be a part of someone's care from the point they needed 911 to the day they are well enough to move up to med-surg is a real blessing. May God bless all nurses regardless of where we work. Much love to all! ❤️❤️

I was a ICU nurse first, I learned how to be a ER nurse by floating, and I did a lot of agency where I would work both ER and ICU in the same shift. Organized chaos in the ER is fun, but a really good unstable crashing patient with a Swan, multiple vasopressors, a ventric, triple H therapy, septic shock, neuro, codes are all fun to. I dig both the ICU and ER. 😊

Im a cath lab RN, i think in the lab you get a little bit of both, it's super chaotic while your stabilizing a pt with impella or pacing or coding the pt or RSI, or all of those at once but once everything is set and they are semi stable things calm down and become very detail oriented, for instance managing anticoagulation/ACT timing, sorting lines and managing hemodynamics becomes very detail oriented. I love the lab! Haha

As a first responder and soon to become a nurse this year, I couldn't chose between ICU and ED. However, as I am working on my preceptorship in the ER, I absolutely feel like I am home, so I made a decision to pursuit ER.
Funny but when I told my Chief' I was thinking about ED, he told me, "of course you are going to the ED, that's where you belong"

My dad recently had his last heart attack and was brought into his closest hospital that has a heart unit , he was in alot if pain and they couldn’t get his vtach to stop so th had to shock him while awake in ambulance on the way which did nothing and he said it hurt like no other but when brought in ER he was immediately taken to cath lab and was in there 3 hours cuz his heart was anatomically incorrect so they were unable to punch thru to get get oxygen to get oxygen to the hole half of his heart and the heart specialist couldn’t believe he lived thru that but when they finally got thru the heart on that side the heart was pretty much dead but my dad was still alive cuz my dad is one strong man but he had these butterfly ivs on both arms they used to try to keep his blood pressure up cuz it was very low and they had to do the pressure oxygen too but my dad is tuff although taking any breaths was ver short and you could tell was very hard and short and he couldn’t stand up without losing his balance and the ICU docs told us he was in so many meds that was keeping him alive and without them he would pass so scary but my dad knew and my dad hated hospitals especially after being in the Korean War and what he seen so after a few days he called me and said he wanted to go home as I heard him ask the doctors what was the point of them giving him all these meds when e knew it was just prolonging the inevitable especially when he kept going into v tach which is a fatal heart rhythm & that’s when he did the DNR CUZ HE DID NOT WANT TO BE SHOCKED AGAIN ESPECIALLY KNOWING THAT THERE WAS NO WAY HE WAS GONNA LIVE WITH ONLY HALF OF HIS HEART WORKING & there was no improvement over the last few days & he had the butte

I feel confident that I could step in to any role offered in nursing because of my skills acquired as an ICU nurse including ER. Further, most advanced nursing programs encourage applicants to have ICU experience before applying. But I tip my hat to ER Nurses, because they deal with the unfiltered reality of what comes into our hospital and it ain't very pretty at times.

Ok ICU is HARD too! Why is the other one not talking about how every doctor, resident, and all the teams in the hospital comes to the ICU nurse with questions all day long, as soon as you sit down to chart, the nurse is needed. How the docs can’t wipe their ass without a nurse. How sometimes when it’s short you may get 3patients! The nurse must take their patient for CT Scans and whatever other testing needed along with the transporter dragging beds back and forth, perform full care on their patients making it worse when the CNA is lazy and does not want to help which is everywhere and if the lazy CNA’s are not at your facility please tell me where you work so I can come!!

    • @bebeerin
      @bebeerin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The ICU doesn't even get CNAs at my hospital so just be grateful for the help you do have. If someone's being "lazy" it could be that they don't know what else they could be doing for you. A lot of the things nurses have to get done, only NURSES can do. If you're stressed because you're running behind, it's likely not because a CNA wasn't helping. It's because the majority of tasks you have to do in a day, only nurses are allowed to do like medications, charting, etc. If you need help speak up and treat people with kindness. If you're coming at someone with negative vibes of course they won't want to be around you

I work Long Term Acute Care, currently in a post-acute-medical unit, I have an average of 20 patients with on-going admits and discharges, I pass my own meds, provide wound care, and over-see ADLs. Aside from politics; understaffing; and random arising issues, I have patients on IVs, Trachs, ostomies, hospice without DNRs, fall risks, combatives, psych pts, etc. I'm in school right now and have a little over 2 years to complete my BSN and want to work ICU 😅

I am a retired CT Technologist who spent my last 14 years at level 1 trauma centers. It is absolutely chaotic when a major trauma, cardiac, or stroke patient rolls in. I loved that chaos because I knew that for the next 20 minutes, I would be incredibly busy but after that it would calm down. I always hated it when someone would come in and mention how quiet things were at that moment. NEVER use the 'Q' word in an ED because it will come back to haunt you.

We dont need to have so much chaos in nursing. Hospitals need to hire more nurses and pay them better. They could prioritize this but it seems like the don’t. The safety issues that arise with short staffing is unacceptable. And not to mention people don’t want to pickup extra shifts because a lot of hospitals always keep staff just enough or short.

Continued-2 this mass on the inner corner of his nose& eye that continued to grow & finally went to doctor cuz it kept bleeding ( one thing about my dad he did not go to docs if he could avoid at all possible example cuz he was a mechanic& worked in cars & his passion of building the best Sand rails “dune buggies” since the early 70’s for himself&my brother&i & eventually2 sell cuz he could do custom & sell for $30k- over $100k plus he loved it things would happen & I seen one time a piece of sheet metal had sliced his arm wide open from wrist to almost the cease of elbow yet my dad would pull out the super glue lol he used super glue long before ER’s starte using it instead stitched & liquid skin/bandage too it was just my dad lol anything was better than going to the doctor) back to the mass on my dads face so he finally seen a doctor, they did a biopsy & sure Enuf it came back as an aggressive type of skin cancer & they immediately wanted to set up surgery@ huntsman center but as soon as my dad found out that the margins were so deep that they would disfigure him by removing half of his eye socket and basically the base of his nose he declined& said I’m to old to go thru such a change& at the time he was about 70yrs old& there was no convincing him otherwise so over the years it continued to grow so much that it grew in front of that corner of his eye so he couldn’t see as well to drive very far or at night but he never complained, then about a year after that diagnosis he went to the doctor cause he was having trouble voiding and sure Enuf after some tests his was diagnosed with prostate cancer& his markers on that were of the chart & they continued testing and the numbers keep rising but he had no interest in treatment, so we all were aware with all his stents & a catastrophic event in the table with the last stent from back then where the entire heart muscle literally comes apart from itself & the doctor told me angrily when I said so it’s very rare he replied “ no no tare IT DIES NOT HAPPEN EVER ABD IF I WASNT ALREADY IN YOUR DADS GEART AT THAT EXACT MOMENT YOUR DAD WOULD Be DEAD!! we were informed at that moment my dad was in borrowed time from that moment forward & we’d be lucky to have him another year ( he was about 69 yrs old at that time) but if he has another heart attack it’s game over for him. Continued-3

If you are extremely organize and value that, then deff ICU. You most likely won’t see much organization in the ED and will most likely be stressed out by the amount of disorganized chaos in there. Most ICU patients are critical and you will get ample opportunities to promptly act when you know they are going downhill

ICU nurse here! We ARE EXTREMELY LUCKY IF WE HAVE ONLY 2 VERY UNSTABLE PATIENTS! THESE DAYS (ESPECIALLY COVID-19 TIMES) WE HAVE 3-4 PTS EACH ICU RN!
OUR ER NURSES HAVE ANYWHERE FROM 4-8 PTS. Don't ever work for a profit hospital! They'll crap all over you then punish you for doing a job well done!

Alright the ICU nurse is making it seem like ICU is all completely planned. She didn’t talk about all the drips we have to titrate, the complete level of care we provide that goes above and beyond what most ER nurses are trained to do, how the doctors are constantly asking you questions, how sometimes you may have to take 3 or 4 pts in the ICU if you are short, how sometimes you may have no PCT to help at all but you are still expected to provide COMPLETE care to all your pts whether you have 2 or 4, how many times you have to stay behind to chart because you had no time to sit down and chart through the whole 12 hours, and on and on

Thanks for the video!!! I'm mid way through third semester accelerated BSN program. I have been trying to decide where I should focus myself and I've been leaning toward ER. However, I don't know if anyone will hire a new grad in the ER right off. Any suggestions on where to begin career as BSN RN so I can be well rounded and gain great skills to be solid, confident, capable, and marketable?! I am afraid if I go to something super specific I will pigeonhole myself there and was told it would be harder to find jobs if I don't have a good baseline of skills. thanks!

I'm both an ICU and ER RN and completely understand both sides. My only problem with this post is - how many times I hear "like" in one sentence 🤣. Put on Closed Captioning and count how much "like" and "totally" are used in one sentence. God I hope she is truly a good nurse. There are other words such as FOR EXAMPLE instead of LIKE every other word. Wears me out. And slow your speed down.
