    Nothing about it screams E30 M3 to me, it's got turbo, it's too big, too heavy and not available in manual, i think the E30 M3's actual spiritual successor is the Toyota GR86 simply because they both have really similar specs, i mean it's a small rwd coupe that weighs around 2800 lbs and it's got 230 hp naturally aspirated engine with manual transmission 🤷‍♀️

    • @crimsonpirate1710
      @crimsonpirate1710 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hahaha no one wants a manual, it has a turbo to be far more fuel efficient, its heavier to be safer. Its a MODERN version of the old M3 she means

      E30 existed as competition homologation special, your Japanese 4 banger is just short of mass production hatch., does it even have a competition history? May as well say Model 3 is M3 because name. 2er isn't E9, either, but it's ONLY 3 box I6 on the market today, so it's only thing that comes close. Also from same actual manufacturer & not some uncompetitive wannabe. What modern BMW DOESN'T have a turbo?

    • @y26mek
      @y26mek 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the previous shape 2 series is more like the e30, this was just a forced comparison to the e30… “e30 has engine. G42 has engine. G42 = e30”… i disagree with this comparison tbh

  • @rembo183

    I have a base 230i; it’s great! It’s got 255hp and 295lbs of torque. 0-60 in 5.5 seconds per BMW. Nice daily and excellent mpg.

    • @malligrub
      @malligrub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And 5.5s as per BMW is probably actually 4.8s...Wouldn't go for the 220i but the 240i wouldn't even give me 3 months before accidently losing my license, the 230 is the sweet spot.

    • @rembo183

      @@malligrub Yes indeed. It is a blast to drive and looks like a luxury sports car inside. I’ve got In Alpine White with the cognac (tan) interior. For $39,500 it’s a true bargain IMO. Love this car!

    No, it’s just the modern 2 series. It has the homage with the box arches but that’s literally it. Park one next to the E30 and it’ll dwarf it. I’m running one as a courtesy car and it feels much like a BMW, but one from the future and not one from the past.

  • @smilepermile8165
    @smilepermile8165 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I see what she means, with the pronounced wheel arches. Lets face it - from a business perspective, its impossible for BMW to create an under 1300kg RWD naturally aspirated 8000rpm+ with individual throttle bodies, and expect people to buy it (when big SUVs and EVs are what the majority of buyers aka non-car enthusiasts are interested in). You need to pass it through the super strict emissions regulations, sound regulations and safety regulations - which is why the Toyota GR86 (a relatively large capacity 4 cylinder RWD car which also weighs under 1300kg, with a manual gearbox) will only have a 2-3 year production run for the UK market. If you want the modern-E30 M3 experience with a full warranty, you get a GR86. But if you don't mind sacrificing handling capabilities for a more refined and relatively more livable/practicality, the G42 2 series coupe isn't a bad choice. Usually I like to go on the hate bandwagon for BMW's recent designs but I honestly think this new 2 series Coupe isn't too bad - maybe the rear taillights remind me of the pre-facelift E90 taillights, which I never liked. Sometimes you should give credit where its due, instead of being all negative for the sake of it, otherwise you lose credibility in your views.

    Closest you will get to an E30 M3 for less than 10k is a BMW E36 318ti Sport. Similar engine (albeit with less power but easily tunable), same rear suspension and some came with an LSD from factory. Interior is also very similar to an E30.

    It reminds me of the E36. Especially in thundernight. I think in general it captures the spirit of the older 3 series coupes all the way up to E36/E46

    • @CYMRU619
      @CYMRU619 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except it weighs 250kg more, has no manual gearbox and no more performance than an old 325i. Just look at 4:09, it's way too big for a UK backroad. I'm sure it's a nice enough car in it's own right, but not comparable to a 3 series of old.

    • @kyleash3614
      @kyleash3614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CYMRU619 it’s not too big for UK backroads at all. I take mine down them all the time and it’s the perfect size to be honest. I have the 230i which has more than enough power as well.

    The e30 m3 is a special driver's car not because of it's specs, which is easy to copy but the way it drives and inspires confidence, which is difficulty to replicate.

    As a 230i M Sport owner (Yank version in US with more power), I wholly agree this is much like the E30s of yesteryear. It is quicker than the E30 M3, and while heavier, still out handles it. While it isn't fair to compare modern cars to those over 30 years ago, the current 4-pot G42s are so much more like the E30s due to the lighter weight and minimalist (mine without the sunroof too) approach compared to other BMW coupes.

    0-62 time is a bit slow for the rather good and sporty looks, the brand and all the EVs hitting the market - should probably be 6,5-7 ish.

    I just wonder if this is more gt car than sporty car. with such refinement and bulk, 7.5 to 60 is bound to feel slow, but it's really not.

  • @dalbertsnyc
    @dalbertsnyc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Clearly it’s an assignment. She’s not a car person and has aspirations outside of the industry. I mean how could you compare 2 cars, whilst only using 1 car? Why would she not offer any experiences with the E30 M? Why did she mention the current M3 and not the M4? The M3 is a 4 door. Why wouldn’t a “Modern” version be faster than the 30 year older car? Why is she also comparing the other front wheeled drive 2 series to a 3 series M3? Here are some of her comments for the 220i that cracked me up:
    -not terrible
    -easy to live with
    -not something that’s going to get you hot under the collar
    -nice cruiser and enjoyable to sit in traffic in
    -much better than it’s spiritual predecessor
    -it’s more efficient, bigger, cheaper (it’s actually the same price as an e30 M3 30 years ago, with average current price starting in the $50k range), with plenty of tech
    -or would you prefer the old classic that just sounds cool and looks nice?
    This was a horrible review and lacks 50% of the comparison, but it’s just an assignment for the host. As for her, I think she has a great presence, clear and confident talking style, and doesn’t seem to take it too seriously. I can’t wait to see her evolve into an accomplished and “balanced reporter. Good luck!
