    It’s worth noting that, in the months since this video came out, some more information has been made available about the sequence of events that led to Tennant’s return. While the conclusion I came to at the time isn’t fully accurate, the broad strokes of “it was never a case of Tennant sidelining Ncuti” remain true.
    What’s less true is that RTD was forced to bring Tennant back to fill this slot, we now know it was just something he wanted to do anyway.

      Let’s not forget that having a doctor leave the show after 1-3 seasons, regenerate inside the tardis, and spending their first episode fixing the damaged tardis and figuring out who they were got pretty tired and predictable. I give rtd respect for actually surprising me. At least some of the specials will attempt to explain why it happened.

      @@Joe_Brennan_ I agree , a lot off new fans don’t remember just how unloved the program was by the general public back in 1989 , so a lot off the modern criticisms is nothing new. I’ve seen videos saying that it’s too late and that we are past the point of saving the show. But as you say Russell reinvented the show once before and he will do again. I think the return of Tennent will be a nice last hurrah before moving on to the new ears. The power of the doctors the first time had watched a program in about three years I never made a conscious decision to start watching it I just wasn’t that keen to watch and I kept putting it off.I’ve always felt if I’m watching it I don’t enjoy it anymore it’s not necessarily that it’s bad it’s just it’s not being made for a 40 odd year-old guy anymore.

    The BBC needed Tennant to come back: a LOT of fans have checked out because the Capaldi years were very hit or miss, while the Whitaker years were awful. But everyone recognizes how great the Tennant years were. Getting the fans to come back will show that they once again have a decent writer/showrunner in charge, and will literally bridge between the stuff most people didn't like to Tennant (who everyone loves), to maybe giving the new Doctor a chance.

    • @EleneDOM
      @EleneDOM 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Tennant years were great, and I thought only one story during that time really failed. However, I can't figure out why so many people hate on the ensuing Doctors. Things change and evolve, and there's nothing wrong with that. Every time there's a new Doctor we have to get used to that person; long-term Whovians should be accustomed to that by now. That's the nature of this incredibly long-running story. And I loved Jodie Whittaker.

    • @Flichter
      @Flichter 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bingo.
      THIS is the kind of history Doctor Who needed to recapture it's buzz, the return of a previous Doctor, specifically David Tennant's.
      No one gave a shit about "the first female Doctor!", just like no one cared about "the first minority Doctor!". Believe it or not, people watch shows because they're telling good stories, not pushing weird social narratives that have been wholesale rejected by the majority of people (see the epic failures of recent - Star Wars, Amazon's Lord of the Rings, the entire MCU since the all-female Endgame scene and many other shows or movies that don't even deserve to have their names remembered)
      David Tennant's return is basically retconning out Capaldi and the female doctor, as if they never happened, while returning to the literal perfect incarnation of Doctor Who in David Tennant, as well as the last time the show really felt *GREAT*.
      Instead of jumping from the terrible last Doctor to the new actor, this new guy actually has a chance to earn fan's endearment, while sharing the screen with Tennant - unquestionably the most popular *and* most successful incarnation of Doctor Who.
      No one who isn't already watching was going to give the new Doctor a chance just because it was another self-proclaimed "historic" first.
      But with Tennant back? The buzz has returned, IMMEDIATELY, like the last decade hadn't even happened.
      There's literally a 10ish minute piece on the show/Tennant on BBC right now, getting as much coverage as anything besides the Gaza War.
      This is the best possible thing to happen to the show and Doctor Who, the character, other than maybe David Tennant returning full time and just completely dropping the whole "the Doctor regenerates all of the time and becomes a new actor" schtick, completely.

    • @Flichter
      @Flichter 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Completely forgot Matt Smith's Doctor, mostly because he's so terrible in House of Dragons lol.
      For all I care, they could retcon his entire run out of the series too.
      Matt Smith was pretty good, but he wasn't David Tennant and his face is honestly just too weird to not constantly make you break the third wall by noticing that he looks like a mannequin come to life.
      Tennant is prime Doctor.

      I will force myself to watch the first one, it better be the best Who I've ever friggin' seen, to make-up for what they did to me, if not, I'm out. If all three are acceptable, I will try the first episode of the new Who but, again, it better knock my socks off.
      In the last two seasons, is there a single episode that really sticks in your mind as good? I can recall great episodes of all the Doctors in the modern era but I can hardly remember any episode in the last two seasons and I watched them twice. Shows that they are so boring and shitty, you don't even remember them.
      Capaldi did a fantastic job, if only he had some kind of a script to work with, the show would have been great. Jody also had a crap script but, she didn't even try to do anything with it, she just read the lines and played along - terrible, terrible, terrible.

      That line also predicted her season, too, the one after Capaldi. In it, it was confirmed they are not a Time Lord, they are a Timeless Child, aka literally just God of Gallifrey. They created the Time Lords, and the Time Lords have only 12 regenerations, while they do not. They also do not have to change appearance, they choose to. Which is why we have Tennant back. Not only because of an easy business venture, but also because it is factual to the lore of The Doctor.
      I do hope they do more with the Master's facts, though. He is two, not one. He is natural, a born Time Lord who can only regenerate 12 times. He is also unnatural, and undead soul capable of possession bodies of others to continue living past his 12 regenerations. If they're running with the recent lore of The Doctor, they absolutely should return the original old lore of the Master again.

Tennet made the doctor so much more fun again, and gave a thrill of adventure that so many wanted to see, and I'm sure doing so again is an intentional move. A lot of people lost interest in doctor who over the years because of poor writing on the part of Chibnal, who decided to ruin what was some 58-59 years worth of continuity in one story line that came out of left field. Bringing back RTD and David Tennet, even just for a short time on Tennet's part, will help bring back an audience that had been left disappointed by poor story telling, and give the show the life and hype it needs for Ncuti's introduction as the doctor, and allow him the audience he deserves

He brought more emotion, established great relationships and story twists with other characters and events in time. Some of which they have still come back to in the years since. I'm just glad David is back. Matt Smith carried the torch brilliantly, after l got over that David was not coming back, but David was exceptional as the Doctors. He was so emotional, ruthless and kind hearted. The "I could so much more" was a killer and his lifespan in comparison to the other iterations was soo short. It will be interesting, cause he can't be exactly like who he was, because he's had multiple lifetime experiences since and so he is 10 but not. Ultimately, I just hope 10/14 and Donna have a happy ending and there's some closure.

Whether the writers, directors or producers planned it that way or not, it was genius. The 14th Doctor proves that. I think it was the best move they ever made. I was born in the 80s and didn't really attain consciousness until the 90s, in which my first exposure to the Doctor was Paul McGann in that movie that I kinda liked at the time, but my dad certainly didn't -- because he'd seen Tom Baker, etc. The first Doctor I _cared_ about was Christopher Eccleston, who was foolish to give up the mantle so soon, I think, because I really liked his crankier, twitchier Doctor, and he could've really solidified his place in Whoverse Hsitory instead of being "that guy before David Tennant" for so many people. But his mistake gave way for David Tennant, who took no time at all to earn his place as _my_ Doctor, as well as the Doctor of pretty much everyone in my age bracket who was watching the show.

And potentially I see the possibility that because 13 has gone through.... alot of trauma, the doctor needed to regenerate to a form that allows them to process it all properly, and the mind decided that 10 was the thing needed.
    Also remember what the Curator said in the 50th anniversary.

The 60th anniversary is having a previous Doctor the center of the story instead of Gatwa trying to get his footing in the roll with all the 60th framework going on. This gives Fans that left after Capaldi a chance for some nostalgia and might give Gatwa a better chance of keeping those fans instead of coming right after Whittaker who was much less popular then Capaldi and draw them back. Bringing back old foes, characters, storylines, etc we haven’t seen in a long awhile is really quite cool once in awhile. While it’s also important to have new things too and originality obviously. Showrunners and the like nowadays use nostalgia to bring actual fans of their shows back, but then they, for some reason (I said sarcastically), just fuck it up completely. I can't think of many rebooted, remade or sequel to a show or movie that didn't give big middle finger to the original show/movie and its fans. Blade Runner 2049 is a good example of building on a previous story without shitting on said previous story.
      People are far too forgiving to writers and showrunners for absolutely ruining some iconic or otherwise great franchises.
      Same with this - Tennant will forever be my favorite Doctor, but even he won't bring me back to the show after what has already transpired. The damage has already been done and I've very little hope of this bridge ever being crossable again.

    David Tennant and RTD was such a ground breaking duo for doctor who. The script with Davids acting made every episode feel like it ment something and even characters we only got to see for one episode left us with emotional scars(silence in the library, blink and the Madame pompadour episode). I didn't realize how much of not only a shock it was but how much I actually wanted it to happen until I saw the regeneration scene from Jodie to Tennant for the first time. And, as he was recovering from his regeneration, I was also stuck doing the Tennant-style "What? What?! WHAT?!" pretty much at pace with him as I was watching it. Particularly his second one when he looked at his outfit and had his trademark second "What?!" - for exactly the same reason.
    I was obviously expecting Ncuti. But, you know, this is even better. I agree with your reasoning. The alternative on the 60th anniversary was to have nothing or to have the wrong Doctor (from RTD's perspective). Given how well RTD did with Eccleston and Tennant, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. Had it not been for his choices and the way RTD brought back Doctor Who from a 10 year hiatus (from the 96 movie) or a 20 year hiatus (if you count just the series), it seems fair to allow for a little leniency.
    Jodie originally had my vote for being unique and original in terms of being the first on-screen female Doctor (not counting the parody). Unfortunately, Chibnall and his writing staff just did not come up with great stories for her and wasted all of her potential. That's not her fault. Though, I do think I would like to see her in a future Doctor Who special with multiple Doctors running around. I think she would do quite well with Tennant (as she did in Broadchurch) and probably Ncuti as well.
