Reference my previous comment, the LiFePO4 battery has been fitted to my GSA for 7 months now. I have not had to charge the battery at all during that period and the bike never fails to start instantly. My experience is that fitting this battery has completely eradicated the starting problems and I cannot see any reason why this solution wouldn't solve anyone else's starting problems either👍😉

Same problem with my R1200gs (2018)
I changed the battery and problem solved.
The first time it didn't start and the second time it did.
    The heated grips activated themselves.
Same message "key not in range".
BMW told me this happened when the battery started to die.

I own a 2019 R1250 GS Adventure which I bought new and I live in Victoria, Australia. I will keep this as short as possible and try and avoid going into any details that readers and fellow owners already know. I have experienced all the starting problems that have been documented by riders around the world for four years. The sudden and unexplained no-start events, the myriad of TFT screen fault messages etc. I do not know if this problem applies to every MY but it certainly applies to MY19, MY20 and MY21 as I have read user complaints online. I have used a total of four AGM batteries in four years, Exide (which caused problems in the first 3 weeks of bike delivery), Deka, Yuasa and SSB, all have been either 200 CCA or 240 CCA batteries. Batteries have always been fully charged and able to pass a load test when the bike failed to start and have been connected to an appropriate charger when the bike has not been in use. So battery problems are not confined to a specific batch of Exide batteries that were factory fitted by BMW when the bike was new. My son has an R1200 GS Adventure, he has used the same AGM batteries, and he has had zero starting problems over the four years that I have owned my bike. Regardless of the healthy status of all four AGM batteries the starting problems have always suggested that a battery power problem existed. Any mature vehicle system does not require changes to valve clearances, or require pushing whilst in gear, or any other unusual or creative change to get the vehicle to start. Does anyone have to do that with their car? Standard comments from BMW dealers have included ‘cannot replicate the fault’ and ‘they all do that’ along with others. Is BMW Motorrad really happy with that state of affairs? It has appeared so. I purchased a GOOLOO GP2000 lithium jump starter, it is small, light, and quick and easy to use. I carry it in my top box and it started the bike every time I needed it to. The bike started instantly and essentially proves that the complete starting circuit is serviceable provided that sufficient cranking power is available. BMW obviously made significant changes (mechanical & electrical) from the R1200 GS Adventure to the R1250 GS Adventure. When making those configuration changes did they carry out a detailed Power Management study under all user operating conditions, in all environments that users operate these bikes in, and over a reasonable period of time to ensure that the starting circuit for instance, from the battery right through to the starter motor and everything in-between, were compatible and actually worked? Only BMW know the answer to that question. I used the GOOLOO GP2000 for many months on many occasions to prove to myself that the starting circuit is serviceable enough to be operated as designed, and as delivered on the bike when it was new. Once I was convinced that the problem was the power source then I researched a safe and more capable alternative. You can research the various chemistries of Lithium batteries yourselves if you wish, I selected Lithium (Li) Iron (Fe) Phosphate (PO4) which is LiFePO4, it’s the safest battery chemistry and fit for purpose. I purchased a SSB Powersport Lithium Ultralite, LiFePO4, LFP14H-BS, 150mm X 87mm x 93mm. The battery came complete with screw on plastic spacers to raise the battery height to suit the motorcycle battery compartment. The bike now enthusiastically starts first time every time, under all conditions and as it should have done when I purchased it in the first place. I finally have the bike that I thought I purchased four years ago. Ignition has improved and all lights and displays have improved. If this problem went away at some production point then what was changed during production and why don’t all users know about it? Prior to starting the bike the ‘My Vehicle’ screen on the TFT display always shows a battery voltage approaching, or at, 13 volts. I have an Ozcharge OC-PRO80L 12 volt 480ma LiFePO4 battery charger which I have not used again since I charged the battery when it was new straight out of the box. As soon as the charger tells you that the battery is fully charged then disconnect the charger. I have a charging pigtail lead fitted to the bike and I check the battery voltage with a meter via this lead before using the bike. The battery voltage is now always between 13.27 volts and 13.30 volts. The most the voltage ever drops in a week or more is 0.01 volts (1/100th of a volt) which is probably due to the bike internal clock and maybe a standby function of the keyless start module. The bike charging system is capable of keeping the battery charged and I will only use the battery charger/maintainer if the battery voltage ever drops below 13 volts which it hasn’t done and so far doesn’t look like it will. You do NOT, and SHOULD NOT, keep the appropriate battery charger/maintainer connected to your bike when the bike is not in use. Do I leave the GOOLOO GP2000 at home? No I don’t as I may meet a fellow R1250 GSA rider one day who is stuck at the side of the road/trail or next to a fuel pump in a service station because his bike will not start.

If this works out for me. I shall forever be grateful to you. Now the challenge will be to find/source this particular battery here in India.
      Thank you ☺️

Had this for first year on my 2019 GSA from 25,000 miles. Put on a new higher power YUASA battery but still couldn't rely on it starting when hot. Had to carry a booster set, which got it going. BMW Tunbridge Wells had it and found the valves had not been set correctly (garage that sold it lied about the valve service having been done), and that the "new" battery was not holding the charge. £180 later and it now (touch wood) seems fine. Valves were reset and a new OEM battery installed. Just done 1500 miles to France and back and no issues. Hopefully sorted at last! I am throwing out my old Optimate and getting a proper BMW charger for this battery. In case it caused the battery issue.

You did not mention if it's a cold start, or hot start issue, or both. My 2020 RS developed a failure to crank over fast enough to start when at operating temperature. It is a somewhat common problem that most dealers don't seem to be aware of. Yes it is related to the decompression mechanism which is not a 'valve' as you were told but a centrifical device which lifts the front exhaust valves slightly when the engine is rotating slowly. Installing a new battery may provide enough cranking power to start the engine despite a non functioning decompressor but is a short term fix only. My problem was exhaust valve clearances that were too loose though still barely within factory specs of 34-41mm. My front exhaust valves measured 39 and 40. I installed the correct shims to achieve 36mm on both and completely resolved the issue. If it's a hot start problem you should insist that the dealer check and adjust your valve clearances.

The battery is not the ISSUE i have a similar issue with my 2019 GS changed battery and starter not the issue... the standard BMW Battery is 170CCA 13.5amp I switched to a 270CCA 14.0amp Battery still had issue...I bought a Li-Po saved a ton of weight and up the CCA to 360 14.6amp it now starts but on occasion has a HARD start....ive adjusted valves timing and even cleaned the injectors ...BMW is stumped , bike runs fine and throws NO codes. My 2022 GSA is 100% fine and has No issues with BMW battery starts every time!!

Whats the latest? I just got a motoBatt MHTX16 battery. (350CA) Lets see how this goes. I've done valve clearnces, cam alignment, new spark plugs, air filter okay, don't know what else to try until you mentioned you cleaned the injectors. Will try this then. Can't be that involved

@@CLLUK my bike starts every time but has a clack sound ...spent 2k sending my bike to BMW to see if they could fix this ,,,they found NOTHING wrong no worn part no damaged pieces valves checked timing , starter all 100% the bike used to hard start and sometime throw a faulty lamp code that no longer happens.....Im stumped but happy the bike runs fine!

Thanks for getting back to me. This sees such a common problem. After I adjusted the exhaust valve clearance, I did the Cam alignment. (slightly out), fitted now spark plugs, air filter and started fine a few times and then a couple of struggle starts. I'm really disappointed. I did for the first time contact my dealer. They said it probably needs a new battery AGGRRR!
Anyway, I am waiting for my new motobatt hybrid (Lithium/AGM) battery with 350CCA.
I know this is not solving the issue but its like taking a sledge hammer to it. Like you, the bike runs nicely. no worries there. Someone said he tried cleaning the injectors. Not done that. Maybe I will. Don't know. Oh, I am pretty confident the auto decompressors are OK . I put a few videos on my channel @CLLUK

@@CLLUK its a puzzle for sure My 2022 no issues at all .....i set the Auto Decom on both sides to the Min clearance so they are 100% engaged on every crank over...so my valve clearances are set at factory min that didn't change anything ..im just waiting for whatever to break so i can finally know what it was that makes the noise!

@user-ku4yk4ut4z So you had this issue before even with the bmw oem battery? I've read people approach their dealers and the first thing they say is it needs to have the oem fitted first. Apart from the obvious business reason I can't see the technical reason. Been thinking about this lots. I first thought. Well it's a low CCA. So it starts turning the engine over slower and less possibility of throwing the auto decompressors out due to centrifugal force. Sorry, probably not explaining this very well. You might understand what I am saying

  • @CLLUK
    @CLLUK 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for sharing this with us. I have the same issue. Also checked my Exhaust Valves. Like you, found the LHS were 0.40 and 0.41 (although as you stated correctly, just the front ones have the auto decompressor fitted) The RHS were fine 0.36/0.35. Fitted shims on the LHS. Bike is better but did struggle on a couple of times. I should of checked the auto decompressor mechanisms on both sides whilst i had it all open (Dumb!) incase one as defective or sticking. Oh well, in i need to go again. PS (Battery/Connections/Starter all checked OK)

Have same issue, hoping it’s battery. Haven’t even rode the bike yet. Picked up from dealer in winter and was a rough start to put into trailer. Mechanic said May need to tender. Anyway couple months later tried to start in shop same issue. There’s also a weird crackling noise. 2023 1250 0ks

Sounds like the bike battery. Ignore the age of the bike. The age of the bike and battery are normally different, the battery could have been sat in a warehouse for years before being put in the bike when it was built. I have a 1250 GSA (but 2019) and dont understand why the dealer has advised you this. I park mine in first so it uses the engine compression to stop the bike rolling. Doing what he says defeats the object and tbh, you shouldnt have to do it anyway! Sounds more like the Dealer trying to avoid giving you a new battery under warranty.

Never heard so much nonsense. Sounds like bmw dodging a bullet. I’ve also owned two and I have a 22 gs which I have had no issues with but heard there was a dodgy batch of batteries that should be replaced. for nearly £20k I will be priming absolutely nothing.
