    Oh wow... Parallax scrolling! And 3 layers of that in spots!
    Sure it isn't overlapping, and the parallax stops when the trees come in, but a game this old just having it at all is already very positive thing in my opinion ^^

    • @Sodaholic6502
      @Sodaholic6502 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ruko Michiharu These old machines were all scanline based. It's one layer that's split into 3 rectangles, having the lines scroll with a different offset with fine control. Many NES and SMS/GG games do the same thing.
      Actually, that's how a lot of games did parallax.

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Blastfrog I know, I can tell it's a single layer because it doesn't overlap.
      There are actually many more ways to do parallax scrolling on a single BG layer but that depends very much on the system it's on and how good are its sprite capabilities, the best examples of parallax scrolling on a single BG layer come from the Turbografx 16, the system had amazing sprite-capabilities, and could use sprites rendered behind the single BG layer to fake a second overlapping layer, and it also had enough ram to animate several background tiles to make it look like overlapping parallax scrolling... But dividing the single BG layer in several horizontal parts and moving each at a different speed is the most common way of making it, and that's how this game, and most of the NES, SMS and GG games that did parallax scrolling did it...

    • @tastywindex
      @tastywindex 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ruko Michiharu There are actually some Atari 2600 games with parallax. Some of the examples are debatable due to their methods of achieving it, but the game Jungle Hunt definitely has it in the form of some treetop leaves and such that scroll when you move. Also worth mentioning is that the arcade game Moon Patrol is pretty much considered to have the first big parallax in a video game, and that was in 1982. Old systems are a lot more capable than people think sometimes.
      also, forgive me if I sound stupid about the tech, I'm not much of a hardware guy.

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nesbro Ooh that's pretty interesting!
      I really can't imagine horizontal parallax scrolling on the Atari (since first of all it had no natural horizontal scrolling support, but it could be pulled off with some programming tricks, and an extremely low horizontal resolution)
      I'm much more familiar with the 3rd gen and 4th gen systems, and Parallax Scrolling only became a thing you'd expect to see in games in the 4th generation, so that's why I'm so impressed when I see a system this old doing it ^^ (Although I know plenty of 3rd gen games that did it, but I'm still impressed by them)

    Terrific game, very original and full of character, making the most of beautiful graphics, good game design and simple but effective sound effects - the "alarm" when your nemesis was approaching was especially memorable - for years, my siblings and I used it as a private joke to warn each other jokingly of some impending "danger", nuisance, unwanted visit, etc. Brings memories of good times, and even the odd tear... Thanks for the great video!

    You should totally do a video on text adventure games. They played a huge role in PC gaming and gaming in general. You could touch on the classics like adventure and the Zork series, Planetfall, and Photopia, but also on the more obscure and really strange ones.

    It's cool to see this. My dad lived six miles from where the strip's creator, Johnny Hart, was born. They had a PGA Tour event from 1971 to 2006 and two minor league hockey teams, one from 1973 to 1977 and one from 1997 to 2002, with logos designed by Hart in the Binghamton, New York area.

    Both this game and Grog's Revenge were favorites on my C64 growing up. Once you get to Stage 3 of QFT, it gets crazy hard to sync up with that bird that helps you jump the lava.

    Watching this reminded me of a typing game we used to have. I'm pretty sure it was BC but I could be wrong. It's not like we played it to actually learn how to type. >.>
    And OMG, Leisure Suit Larry! XD One day my mom was starting it up and my sister and I wanted to play. She told us if we could get past the questions we could. Well, we breezed right through those questions and were pretty excited! Then she shut us down. She didn't think we'd be able to answer them and had no intentions of letting us play. :(

    • @surfersilver6610
      @surfersilver6610 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes the 'Smurfs', little demons inside our consoles and home computers while playing, now we have Apple, Microsoft & Googlemel 24/7.
      I just looked up and the Internet only refers to the cute cartoon characters and some 'dining room origin'(probably made up to hide any connections to the demons) but I remember back in the late 80's finding out the name came from demons that were called 'smurfs' and were just made cute and became the 'victims' of human Gargamel.
      Funny how the Internet can erase, change or block information to change history and origins.

    This is the first pirated games I've ever owned. Complete with a spinning "Razor 911" logo on boot. I got an old C64 back when I was 10, in the far back mid 90s! I was unsure why the animation for the logo was animated better then the game, and what the scrolling numbers where all about. Years later I would understand, but to this day it was one of the oddest pirated game I have/had ever seen.

    I had this back in the day, though being an impoverished Briton, it was on tape. I didn't think it was distributed on cartridge here, though I notice the title screen in the video said 'Software Projects', which was the home of Manic Miner after Matthew Smith left Bug Byte. A curious mix of US and UK, as after all, we'd call it Quest For Tyres if it were a UK strip :)

      Lazy Game Reviews The SierraVision might have been before I had a PC. I'll check them out. I just loved going to the mall, Crown Books, B. Dalton, Software, etc., or Egghead.. looking through the boxes, and hoping there would be a new sequel like Space Quest II or King's Quest III... AND that I had enough money to buy it. Somehow my friend and I were even able to buy Leisure Suit Larry 1 at Software, etc. Then when the SCI games were too slow and ugly on my CGA XT, it took me about a year to save up enough to build a 286/16 with VGA and 2MB RAM, piece by piece.

    This is one of those early PC games that got ported to the Colecovision for some reason. If it was on the MSX, that must have been why, because I've heard that and the Colecovision are pretty similar in hardware and such.
    BTW, on the topic of early Sierra games, Jawbreaker's pretty worth checking out. It's a rather shameless Pac-Man clone, but it's still a pretty fun game. It's more vertically oriented and speedy than the original.
