Lazy Game Reviews I know, I know. I just didn´t want to insinuate that you, as a kid-friendly care-bear, would be capable of forcing an educational programme to happily use foul language. I know of course full well that you would scoff at the mere thought of committing such an atrocity.
Plus, to be fair, the imo hilarious pairing of your character being named a slang word for scrotum AND having him die of "exhaustion" was totally coincidental and not planned by you.
The game merely took the ass-ets you gave it and went to town on them.

I never beat this game as a kid.
However, when I trekked across the US by car as an adult moving form Illinois to Sacramento, I recognized a lot of the landmarks from my childhood game play.
Loser.

Watching that wagon cross the river as a kid invoked a level of terror completely unmatched by any game since to this very day.
What a flashback! I played it in 1986 on a monochrome apple II in Mr. Peterson's, Green Oaks elementary school classroom. He promised to teach me code and how to modify the game after school if I brought my grade average to a B from a C. I got an A- average that year and learned that not all teachers are crabby bitter people, and that learning can be fun. Thanks Mr. P!

@@alexanderfreeman back in the day every game was basically a big text file of code and copy/write protection wasn't really much of a thing besides those old code wheels/books and stuff.

My school's wi-fi hasn't blocked an emulation of the MS-DOS version, so it's basically what I play whenever I have free time.
Speaking of which, I made the mistake of caulking my wagon and floating across the Green River Crossing.
Everyone died.
Except for me. You know why? Because I had my tray table up, and my seat back in the full upright position!

i will never forget the three weeks i spent after my wagon broke, and i was the only one left. i sat around, asking everyone what they had so i could trade to fix my wagon. then some idiot told me if i gave him 2 sets of clothes hed give me a new wagon entirely

I played this on Apple IIe in elementary school, we always looked forward to Oregon Trail day. We had a computer lab full of Apple IIe's and circa 1995 Macs. One of the IIe's had a green screen monitor, the rest were color. Everyone wanted the newer computers and no one used the green screen. I might add this was as late as 2003, so the IIe's were 18 years old! I always hear about people born in the mid '70s to mid '80s having nostalgia for Oregon Trail. I was born at the end of 1992, I'm not even 25 yet, and I loved Apple IIe Oregon Trail so much that I still play Oregon Trail (I play 5th Edition today, which is a much more modern version from 2001 but it's still good old Oregon Trail)

I live in Oregon and my great grandparents came here on the Oregon Trail. I find this game all too accurate.
I'm in Oregon too, and I loved learning about the Oregon Trail in Elementary. The class played a long roleplay game of the Oregon Trail for about 1 month. I did it in 4th grade. I also did a roleplay game for a month in 2nd grade about the pilgrims. We got to sit on our desks like boats while the teacher was a thief. Best year of school ever.

How to beat the game with an alive party (Also works on the zombiefied Organ Trail) - Start early with minimal supplies & lots of ammunition. Hunt to stock tons of food. Trade food for all other supplies. Buy ferries and repair the wagon when needed. Go at a moderate pace. Stop whenever anyone gets sick and don't go again until they are well. Hurrah ! You made it !!

It's interesting to learn of Oregon Trail's origins are as a card game... I got the Oregon Trail Hunt for Food card game for Christmas. Looks like things went full circle!
I actually had Paul Dillenberger as a substitute teacher a few times in middle and high school.

I used to play this in elementary school! We had access to N64's, Plastations and Gameboy Advances -- but we always played Oregon Trail! We thought it was sooooo fun to type cuss words on the tombstones when we died. HAHA! I love this video!
I loved the trading post! I landed in Oregon with about $17,000 last time I played.
Yup, definitely played this during elementary school. Rarely did anyone beat it during the allocated time. It was how legends were made.
this is incredibly interesting. I had heard there was a previous version of the game that "judged your hunting results by how quickly you could type 'BANG'' but i had no idea the original was on some kind of screenless... print-out computer.. I didn't even know those were a thing outside of the Batcave. I mean I knew about punch cards, but..

I remember playing this game during computer time when I was in kindergarten. I liked playing it but I was terrible at it because my crew always died. One got bit by a snake, another came down with dysentery, the wagon broke and I didn't have any spare parts nor any money to buy new ones, the food went bad, the thieves stole our shit, one of the oxen would die, everyone was too exhausted and sick to do anything, the weather was terrible, our wagon crashed in the river and we lost all of our food and possessions...the list goes on. This game felt like it was impossible to win.
Hey there. I appreciate how you include the history of games or other subjects in your videos. The time you take to research and present history in an entertaining way is well done. In particular this game which does has a rich and interesting past. As one who played this game in the hallway of my elementary school in Minnesota on a teletype machine, your effort to take the time to appreciate and share history is to be applauded. Thank you!

In the early 90s playing this on the monochrome computers was a reward at school. Man, so many hours on this game...
My childhood game! This was such a treat to play. Everything Lazy Gamer said and did in this game is exactly how we played. We only picked Banker and made some funny names.
Here in Brazil is really hard to find people that likes old games and hardware, and that's why I like your LGR so much!

This was the ONLY game we would play in computer class back in elementary. I remember getting so mad at a classmate that I made her the party leader, rooted for the family to lose, made her tombstone and the next day she was demanding to know who had played on that computer the day before. Nearly a decade later and I still haven't been caught.

I was born and raised in Oregon, very close to Oregon City. We had a huge Oregon Trail museum that we took field trips to. I love the Oregon Trail games, I wish I could tell people how to ACTUALLY say things like Oregon and Willamette. Oh well, great video :)
This video is such a product of its time. That makes it even more charming.
The computer it was originally written on, although it was an HP2100 CPU, was called an HP2000 when it was running standalone Timeshare BASIC. The first computer I ever used back in the 70's. Great machine, we had a lot of fun on it and learned a lot.
what makes LGR immortal is the fact that most of the games he reviews and talks about are unavailable anywhere but a collectors library. 50 years from now people will be like "Damn so that's where games began!!!"
In school, I learned that Lewis & Clark were attacked by hipsters as well. Lesson learned: Don't allow hipsters to ruin your pioneer adventure.
After watching a few of your videos about dos games I remembered having to play Origon Trail in school. After typing in 'origon trail lgr' what do you know... so cool. Thanks! Great Video as always. The effort you put into this video far out reaches the small enjoyment I got out of it though but I guess if you multiply it by the 150, 000 ppl who saw this it is worth the effort.

This game inspired my move from Georgia to Eugene Oregon. The Willamette valley looks very much like that end screen, and when you are here, you understand why you took the risk!

Very thorough review Clint, this is way cool to see how it all really got started.
I played the heck out of this in our networked Apple IIe computer lab (yes -- with a server containing tons of educational software and two shared printers, all networked together; it was neat) in elementary school. So much so, that I bought the PC version to play more at home! Surprising how entertaining it was, and yet I did learn a few things. Among them, even those pixel-art sketches of Oregon Trail landmarks were accurate enough that when my family did a big round-the-country road trip around 2000-ish, my sister and I marveled as we RECOGNIZED a couple of them, just from memory of those computerized pictures! It also made stopping at them more interesting. "Don't caulk the car and float it across!!" LOL! Seriously, though, it makes total sense how deadly the Trail was, and I probably wouldn't know diddly about it if it weren't for that game.

I live really close to Minnesota and have lived in MN a few times, I never knew this game came from there! Very cool, I remember playing this in the early/mid 90s on the old computers in our classrooms in 1st/2nd grade.
My history teacher this year made us play this game as we reached the Oregon section in our textbook. The students had loads of fun being a farmer and dying of dysentery.

Definitely remember playing this as a young lad in the computer lab at school on an old green monochrome computer (probably an Apple II). It was like 1992 so maybe my school was a tad behind on the technology. Anyways, it definitely made a huge impact on me. I remember getting the newer version (Deluxe?) and having it installed on my home DOS computer. Pure bliss. I totally rocked at this game too, not to brag or anything.
Oh, the nostalgia. Played many hours of this in the classroom along with number munchers.

As a kid I always used to call this Organ Trail, just for namesake with no real implied reason. Decades later the actual game of Organ Trail is really made... I friggin love that game.

Pro Tip: Don't bother buying food. Just buy ammo, and go hunting.
Average yield per hunting round is 80 lbs for the use of ~2 bullets. A box of ammo is 20, which is 800 lbs of meat per box, if you have the time and patience.
Awesome video! In school we had a choice of this, Number Munchers and Louis and Clark stayed home, all on the Apple II. We used to just get 99 bullets and hunt all of the time, since doing that was the closest to a videogame we had in school at the time. Awesome video, keep up the good work!
I remember playing the deluxe version in my school's computer lab on the original iMac back in 2002; 10 years after the game's release. It was so simple yet so fun. I didn't learn anything because I didn't care about that but when I found it again online recently it brought back so many memories.
Lots of good memories with the Apple II version of this game, you nailed it. I've got the boxed Mac Plus version of it but haven't touched it yet, I don't think it's as good as the original IMO. Another kick ass review, thanks!
Absolute classic. I played the 1980 version. The school had a big binder of MECC programs.
At the computer lab at the library at my school in 1986 we had about 10 Apple IIs with green screens, and 1 with an amazing color screen. Playing Oregon Trail on the color computer was every kid's dream. There was also a new-fangled 'Mac' with a weird 'mouse' thing in the other room. I figured it was probably only for drawing on the screen. I wasn't into art so it didn't interest me.
I also liked this lemonade/apple-stand game. I forgot what it was called. I loved to jack up the price of my lemonade even if no one bought it.
Wow - I never actually played this game, but we had a similar game at school based on crossing the great dividing range (with pretty much the same premise and gameplay, but completely open in terms of selecting your path through the mountains). I loved it to pieces and now I'm going to have to track it down for some nostalgia. Thank you PhreakIndee for dredging up those memories :D

I remember playing this back in elementary school in addition to games such as Cross Country Canada and Net-Trek. Had a lot of fun with all of these games it's a shame the current kids in primary school probably won't ever get to see these classics.
I remember my school having a bunch of Apple IIe's but only one IIgs in the computer room. Everybody wanted to play Oregon Trail on the IIgs because of its color graphics. The teacher had to make up a waiting list for us kids to use the IIgs.
This and Odell lake made us kids happy on game day in computer class during elementary school.
I played the 3rd edition in the 90s and I learned about the medicinal uses for various plants. I still use it as a reference and so when people ask me why I need an old computer attached to my back I proudly declare: "In case I get dysentery."

5:16 This gameplay issue was fixed in Oregon Trail Deluxe, which gives you perks for some occupations. For example, picking the Farmer will enable you to fix most broken wheels or axles, leaving you with a surplus to barter with.
How are difficulty levels a gameplay issue?
Oregon Trail was the first and only computer game I played in elementary school back in the 80s. Once a year they allowed each class to go to the library and play the game once, because our teachers and school officials were old fuddy-duddys that didn’t know jack-sh!t about computers, and were convinced students would destroy the machines just by touching them. Whoever spent the cash to buy our school 100 apple computers shouldn’t have bothered. Sometimes I don’t miss the 80s. Lol

Kirk Cross Why would Dysentery prevent it? We learned about diseases in school.
I always considered floating down the river to be the safer option. It's pretty easy to float down the Columbia river (in this game). Your party can't get sick and die of sickness. They can die if you hit rocks, but I've gotten some good runs where almost no rocks spawn, and the ones that did I didn't really have to move out of the way of.
Also, farmer is best class
i always picked banker as a kid, but recently i picked farmer and it was actually a lot of fun because everyone was dying so much, and for a while we didn't even have enough clothes for everyone.

i got in trouble at school when i named my character "bevis and butt-head," and when i died i put on my tombstone "heh heh, we're in hell. this sucks." the teacher was so pissed that she gave me detention and threw the game out.
I absolutely loved Oregon Trail! I managed to get lucky on my third try to make it all the way. Took the full length of class, and I lost 3 people, and my character had shot himself in the foot and was sick because of it.....the other living character had dysentery.... But hey, I still had $600.00 or so in cash and supplies!!! :P

RIchard Garriot's "Ultima" series started the same way as a pen and paper RPG then to the teletype and on to the PC. I played this version of Oregon Trail in junior high or high school. My mother happened to have it loaded in her gifted class. I think "The Banner Saga" is very similar to Oregon Trail along with it's random fights and chess-like combat which isn't.
So it turns out that the indie title "The Organ Trail" released last year it's an homenage to this one I guess. If it isn't an homenage, it's an post apocaliptic zombie themed clone. And I really enjoyed playing it.
Everything about Organ Trail is an homage. The gameplay is an homage to The Oregon Trail, and the story and setting is an homage to several zombie movies, books, and TV shows.
The Organ Trail is awesome- it basically epitomizes what your nostalgia goggles make the Oregon trail look like.
Its been around for quite a while as a flash game, but the full version is totally worth it. Great music, too.
Yep,...I played this in school too. It was a reward to play after all the loads of school work. Some kids didn't get to play it if they didn't finish their work or got left behind. On holidays, and days where we had extra time at the end of class, was when we were allowed to play.
