    / woodsandbarclay This is a very detailed video showing how to disassemble the throttle linkage, clean everything, do a valve adjustment and reassemble. This is a very rare 1985 Mercedes 300CD, there were roughly 1200 made in 1985. At only 56,000 original miles, 1 owner, and Smoke Silver with Black interior this is the holy grail of 300CD's!!!

    Kent Bergsma made a throttle linkage removal tool that works pretty well.

      You do not need a throttle linkage removal tool.

      It's not hard just take your time and don't rush. It'll take you three or four valves before you get the "feel" for it and how to make the adjustment.

    Do you mark the linkages to keep track of which ones go where? I’m afraid I would mix them up.

      No I do not mark them it's not really that complicated just take a couple of pictures before you disassemble it.

    the lobes are centered at 1:Oclock, not 12 0clock
    for .10 mm, you want it at 1 o'clock, as per factory service manual

    • @woodsandbarclay
      @woodsandbarclay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Either of those positions will suffice. The valve adjustment on this car was done absolutely correctly. If you look at the base of the lobe in the 12:00 or 1:00 position you will see that the same radius is touching the rocker.

    Did you manage to have a video adressing the engine bay, explaining all the vacuum lines and connectors for this 85 version...
    Im really having problems with mine....

    • @woodsandbarclay
      @woodsandbarclay  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey buddy I I know you need this video but the videos I make are the actual restorations of the cars I'm working on. Currently we do not have any 85 models that we need to restore the vacuum system on and we're swamped with seven cars right now. However Pierre hadary just wrote an article in the Mercedes-Benz club of America Star magazine explaining in detail the 85 vacuum system.

    How much kg tighten valve cover seal?

  • @carcar3212
    @carcar3212 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    After I did the valve lash, valve cover and linkage setting, the idle jumped up around 100 or so (by ear), I don’t have a digital timing light to check Rpms that way. I tried adjusting the idle set screw on the IP that pushes the throttle linkage up and down. but it didn’t do anything as far as I can tell, did not touch it once before. before I take out the set screw, degum and clean it up, any ideas as to the where the rpm jump may have came from? I blocked off the egr vacuum line and I’ll try that soon, but I’m unsure if that’s what could be causing it. Maybe the connecting bolt from the accelerator pedal link shaft to the linkage itself? Would appreciate any ideas. Merry Christmas!

    • @woodsandbarclay
      @woodsandbarclay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is your rpm? Maybe the valve adjustment put things back to where it is suppose to be.

    • @carcar3212
      @carcar3212 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@woodsandbarclay it seems around 750-800, which from my searching seems to be within reason of regular idle rpm, before it “felt” like 650, a few degrees past the tach on 5~ which seems to be the average “worn” om617 idle with everything running on it. I don’t have the a/c clutch on, and haven’t tried it yet seeing as I’m the third owner and it’s winter atm. I started it up again after letting it get cold and it seemed to settle down a bit so maybe I’m jumping the gun for nothing, it’s my first mechanical diesel so I’m getting used to the ins and outs of the motor itself, i was curious about other peoples’ experience with them : )
      Edit: I should mention near 0 blowby, no cap vibration when you let the oil fill loose, and overall sounds healthy, maybe you’re right that the valve lash set it better, intakes 2 and 3 were too tight and exhaust 3 and 4 were as well, so maybe it may have been the lash affecting the performance

    Hi, I'm Eloy from Spain. Great job. I have a w123 300 TDT with a lot of lagging in the throttle linkage response. Did you some adjustment on throttle linkage parts?. Thanks and sorry for my english.

    • @woodsandbarclay
      @woodsandbarclay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would first check to make sure the line going from the back of the manifold to the alda is blown out with compressed air. Then make sure you have a clean air filter and a proper valve adjustment. Also make sure you have fresh fuel filters. After all that is done that is when you need to check the linkage.

      @@woodsandbarclay Thanks, I'll check all of these things. I appreciate the advice.

    Over time, between valve adjustments, the clearances will grow smaller, unless one of the lock nuts are loose. The tell tale is hard starting, because you end up with the intakes at zero clearance if you go more than 15K between adjustments.

      15,000 mi is a little aggressive once the valves are set they usually hold in place and can be up to 30 to 35,000 MI on a good engine.

      Man this engine basically had a perfect setup I only made minor valve adjustments and there was really no change the engine was already performing top notch. I only think two of the valves were out just a couple of thousands so that's not enough to make a difference.
