  • Injury has forced me off the hills but there's no way I can stay indoors! And so I decided to have a wander through Ambleside, situated at the head of Windermere and do the whole 'tourist' thing in of the Lake District's most popular villages. I visit a number of independent shops, the stunning Stockghyll Force and famous landmarks; including a Roman fort. A grand day out, despite not being in the wild remote places but the change was very enjoyable! Check out the route below.

    13:30 whenever I see a fence like that I remember years ago when I was at St Abb's Head which is the top of a cliff at a coastal seabird colony. There was a tourist bus trip in and some people were messing about at a section of the path with a fence on it and the guide goes "CAREFUL! See that bit over there?" and points back "see how dangerous it is?! Well they decided to put the fence on THIS bit"

    Worth saying - your local independant outdoor shop can absolutely compete with Amazon in terms of prices and they will have decent gear instead of pushing brands at you that value fashion brand sales than actual function.

    Great film again and right in our back yard.. loved it!!
    A suggestion for you... we went low level with some friends on Wednesday on a walk we would never think of and it was wonderful.
    We walked from Hawkshead to Coniston over Hawkshead Hill trough Grizedale forest. Then once in Coniston the absolute must is a pint of Bluebird at the Black Bull then back over to Hawkshead via a different route to end with a pint and a pizza at Poppy Red..
    Fabulous low level walk with a little bit of everything..
    Keep it going Glen you give us loads of inspiration 👍👍

    I'd love you to show us some of the little towns and villages! Makes a nice change if you're up to it...especially when injured. Thanks for showing us Ambleside! It's so interesting that where I live in Australia, we have lots of areas named after places in the UK. Launceston (we pronounce it differently), Ambleside, Windemere the Tamar River, Westbury etc...all named after places over there. The convicts must've been missing home 🤣. In fact when peeps visit Tasmania they often say it reminds them of England! Anyhoo, a bit of trivia no-one asked for 🤣🤣🤣.

    The parade of shops with Greggs used to be the bus station and I remember sleeping a few nights on the benches there. They were all usually full in the mid 70's. No one bothered then about sleeping rough but it has now taken on a different meaning. It was just a cheap way of getting out and I just loved it. (Not all change is for the better!!). I lived in Yorkshire then but moved to the eastern lakes 16 years ago. Better late than never!

    Ambleside. Rains a lot, camouflages with the grey slate. Plenty of good outdoor shops. Lots of Chelsea Tractor tourists who are there for mostly the restaurants, and treat as home from home (London), but unlikely to be seen up any number of mid-sized fells. Far too much traffic. Your beautiful videos capture the real vibe of the Lake District as far as possible from these mosh-pits like Ambleside, many people wading through a long traffic jams half the time looking for parking, enough to be showing off to be in South Lakes at lake level (Windemere/Ambleside maybe as far as Rydal if they've heard of it). This is what happens when so much south Lake District became Air BnB and priced out the locals of 20+ years ago. People here saying Ambleside hasn't changed in 50 years but I think that it has - it has become an upper middle class fest full of oversize 'status vehicles' (not vehicles to throw in your ropes and tents into the back of as per would be seen 50 years ago) - the real lake district is still found near great gable and conniston old man and those areas not quite so accessible via a horrendous traffic jam off the motor way past the 'zip wire forest experience' (I forget it's name). Much of Lakeland as was, has been truly priced out and gentrified, so they'll be less of Jos Naylor's breed able to survive and thrive unless he's holding assets in Blackrock on a shed load of properties. Sorry, rant over. Just an opinion following recent trips there versus those when I was a backpacker navigating all over the Lake District via YHA !

    • @RobinDS-m1g
      @RobinDS-m1g หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can see from this thread it is an echo chamber of people not seeing what I see when I go, but seeing lots of idyllic independent tea shops and windy streets all sitting beneath the first promise of Lakeland hills in the south. There's that too. I feel it is a victim of its own success and now far too crowded , expensive, and full of traffic fumes on a typical day to be enjoyable - it's really not representative of so much calmer and better elsewhere amongst the fellls. Go North, Go West, for sure or even try Patterdale and Ullswater in the East.
